The thing is Mihawk *IS* almost at Whitebeard levels, the only reason he's not an Emperor is because the warlord title basically let him do whatever he wanted without any responsibilities. Emperors hold a lot of political power and a few islands each, Mihawk simply couldn't care less about anything except finding people who are good at swords and the occasional errand is easier than fighting/running from the navy 24/7.

When it comes to liking characters from both sides I just let the plot do its thing. The writing was done well enough to make the viewer appreciate it entirely. Yeah there's obvious bias in hoping one side wins but you can still appreciate the opponents. You'll find new favorite characters here. Lots of unexpected moments too. The arc is among the top for fans for a reason.

I have to say something thing to Alicia in defense of the cannoneers. You shouldn't think of the cannons that they use as sniper guns or hunting rifles. They're more akin to muskets. They're smooth bore. The nuzzles don't have the rifling that you would need to make them super accurate. This is why they need to shoot a lot of them. I've always kind of liked the fact that the cannons in this anime are more like real ones than other shows or movies. At the same time, this makes those people who are spot on with shots, even more amazing in the anime. 😎

Power leveling and power scaling get very tricky at the upper echelons of power in One Piece. You have 'ordinary' people like Mihawk, who has no Devil Fruit powers, but is still regarded as the best swordsman in the world. The interactions between various Devil Fruits are hard to predict as well; I know I didn't expect Mr. 3's wax powers to be able to counteract Magellan's poison powers, at least for a while. Then you throw in things like haki, experience, determination, science, etc, and things get even *more* complicated.

So for the Power scaling. White Beard IS the Strongest Yonko. With Shanks most likely being the next Closest. Kaido was wanting To Fight Whitebeard while he was Distracted. But Is currently being Turned away by Shanks Who really only has a Crew of 20 or so people. Smallest Pirate Crew of any Yonko or Warlord so far. And He STILL not the one people want to mess with. Mihawk may be the worlds Greatest Swordsman. But He was Matching Shanks in Sword Fights. When Shanks was weaker. Shanks has a few Tricks as well. But Yes Mihawk could hang with an Admiral. He could Kill all the other warlords most likely. But he is NOT yonko level. MAYBE First mate level. But not YOnko. The Other two are SUPER powerful yes. But Neither are able to take on White Beard or Shanks. White Beard has a MASSIVE crew. And some of the Strongest People. But its all about Family. The man Him self though. What your Seeing is him in a Weakened State. After Years and Illnesses and living a Hard Life. In His Prime. He was one of Only a Hand full of people that Could Stand Toe to Toe with Roger. Besides another Character that has not been introduced yet. The ONLY people that could Fight Roger was White Beard. Garp (Yes Honestly) And Believe it or not. Sengoku. Garp and Sengoku are both stronger than the Admirals even being almost retired and old. They were a Pair who worked Together. And the Only Marine currently who can hold Garp Back is Sengoku. So The Three most powerful people in this whole fight have barely even Done anything. And what you have seen is NOTHING to what they can do.

this is the true beauty of the Marineford arc. Alicia is genuinely scared of what Aokiji, Mihawk and Kizaru can do - she's seen all of them casually doing stuff that has ruined the Straw Hats days But, the group we're meant to be rooting for? We know NOTHING about them or their abilities - Ace is our only reference point for the entire Whitebeard crew, and he's out of commission. So its a war arc where we KNOW the threat, but don't know how 'our' side stacks up against it Oda did an amazing job in giving us so much but also nothing, all while flipping the 'normal' war arc on its head and changing how we think about it

Wars are like that. People that you love on both sides and don't know whos going to die but all you know that it's more likely going to be the ones you love

something that helped me with rootign for both sides when I first read this was that Oda never shys away from how brutal the battle is. Of course I want Ace to be saved, but everyone here is just a person who is doing what they think is right. It's brutal, people are dying for this. Yeah they're just nameless marines and pirates who mostly die, but they're people. They aren't faceless masses or hordes of artificial grown soldiers. War isn't good and it is never clean. and the anime doesn't let the viewer forget that amongst the brutality
