The greatest achievement of this movie is that there is no malice in it. It would have been so easy to make an ugly mockery of SciFi fans or focus on some of the uglier aspects of the original Star Trek cast, but they avoided all of that and turned it into a genuine homage.

Sigourney practically begged the director to cast her in the part, because it would be completely "against type" and being a female sci-fi icon, she understood best how the role should be lampooned. Originally they didn't want to hire any sci-fi veterans, but fortunately (after a change of directors) her tenaciousness won out.

The deal with Jason's shirtlessness is that in the original Star Trek (which I'm sure you'll discover as you watch it), more often than not, when Captain Kirk got into a fight or a very strenuous physical situation, his shirt would inevitably develop rips or tears or even end up torn off altogether. He usually ended up showing some skin, in other words. Thus Dane's snark, "I see you managed to get your shirt off," a line that every Trekkie in the audience understood. :D

Classic "Hero's Journey" when done right never fails to make an enjoyable story. Fun fact: The bridge set for the "real" Protector was built on an enormous gymbal with hydraulic rams that could slam it up, down, side to side (round and round, dip it now) in any direction using a joystick that the director used. So there was no camera shake to simulate all those missile and mine hits, and all the actors are really trying to hold on to a set that's shifting, bucking and slamming around underneath them.

You had to know the show was good if for nothing else, the awesome Sigourney Weaver signed on to play the "Busty Bimbo" of the show. Just the fact that she played that role made this movie awesome. I love it when an actor doesn't take themselves too seriously and can make fun of themselves. I find that's what makes a good actor into a great actor.

She kinda failed tho. Well, she inevitably failed. Weaver can't play a bimbo, even if she dumb herself down as much a humanly possible, she'll still come of as a badass. And God strike me down if she's not the most gorgeous 50 year old Ive ever seen.

All of the others pre-date me so it took me until adulthood to find them 😂 I did watch some of the OG Star Trek before I watched this movie and I really enjoyed it! I'm learning that the veteran ST fans have a lot of feelings about Discovery, but it was my introduction to the story and I really have a good time with it. Not perfect, but has so much going for it in my opinion. I also saw the pilot to Picard but didn't keep watching it cause I thought I'd be better to watch TNG first. LOVED Galaxy Quest!

So they had to cut it, but there's still subtle bits of it, but Tony Shaloub's character is supposed to be really high the entire movie. Also, the command deck was built on giant hydraulic actuators, so when they're being thrown around while being attack, they are *really* being thrown around.

If you rewatch the scene of Sigourney Weaver getting upset over the ridiculousness of the corridor full of chompers. You can see that she actually says 'Fuck that' but I guess they wanted to reduce the film rating so she's ADR'd saying 'Screw that' instead, despite how obvious it is.

Sigourney Weaver has so many good roles, though these days it seems like her Science Fiction Roles get the most attention. Her historical role as Dian Fossey in "Gorillas in the Mist" is well worth seeing. Very different than Ripley or this but still excellent and heroic. And one of my Alan Rickman roles was is the little known "Dogma."

I had no idea what the genre even was, I was just last-minute tagging along with my friends who were going. I was blown away by how good it was. Someone in the comments suggested Battlestar Galactica (the one from 2004, not the one from 1978) and I second it. And after that, there's a one-season series spin-off called Caprica that's also amazing.

The "I see you managed to get your shirt off" quip was a dig at William Shatner, who either took off, lost or had his shirt torn in about 20 to 25% of the episodes. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m56dmtmIuZqshac.html Guy's line about trying to build a rudimentary lathe was a joke about the Trek episode "Arena", the one where Kirk fights a lizard called a Gorn, and uses the elements he finds around him to build a rudimentary cannon.

“I think it's a chillingly realistic documentary. The details in it, I recognized every one of them. It is a powerful piece of documentary filmmaking. And I do believe that when we get kidnapped by aliens, it's going to be the genuine, true Star Trek fans who will save the day. ... I was rolling in the aisles. And Tim Allen had that Shatner-esque swagger down pat. And I roared when the shirt came off, and Sigourney rolls her eyes and says, "There goes that shirt again." ... How often did we hear that on the set?” - George Takei “I thought it was very funny, and I thought the audience that they portrayed was totally real, but the actors that they were pretending to be were totally unrecognizable. Certainly I don't know what Tim Allen was doing. He seemed to be the head of a group of actors, and for the life of me I was trying to understand who he was imitating. The only one I recognized was the girl playing Nichelle Nichols.” - William Shatner

There's a documentary for Galaxy Quest called "Never Surrender" which is great. The other great sci-fi parody is Spaceballs. The spiritual predecessor to The Expanse really seems like Babylon 5. It's a big commitment to react to it though. Would be interesting if you did, but if you haven't seen it even just watching it on your own would be good. Lastly, I've never seen a reactor do a fiction podcast. If you want to try it, check out the story Sparg on, I think, EscapePod. It's a story I heard years ago and it just stays with me.
