It is not just an adaptation, but an adaptation to contemporary realities. In 1953 Arthur C. Clarke depicted what is happening in society now. And looking at the changes brought about by the aliens, one comes to realize that humanity must change, and the time for that is now.

I don't know if you mentioned it, but the overlords were the only race that lacked the ability to transcend. They became the default 'shepherds' of the races that could since their species was an 'evolutionary cul de sac' as Clark's overlords described themselves.

That's what the ppl who take out timeshares don't understand. I went to one of these seminars where the food & drink was over the top, nothing was spared, then came the sales pitch, everybody was falling over themselves to sign up, I grabbed a bloke, pulled him to the side and said, Right, you want two weeks at Surfers, I want two weeks at Surfers, half the ppl in this room want two weeks at Surfers, there's one house for two weeks, how many ppl do you think are going to get the house? You sign that contract and your son's son will still be paying it off, oh wait, you haven't read the small print have you? I have and I'm not signing, the contract is perpetual, whats that mean, he asked? There's no ending, no end of date unlike a bank loan where you pay it back over 5 yrs, this contract has no end, keeps going after you die. Then who pays for it? Your family, son's, daughter's, nephews, neice's, uncles, aunts, cousins, there is no escape clause, none whatsoever

The short series "Childhoods End" deviates from the Arthur Clarks' book giving the "transcendence" a Christian spin which was not in the book at all. The book described a transformation of Human consciousness from our current ego centric to something else, not Christian as the screenplay has it. In the end the Earth is not "blown up" or destroyed as the film image suggests, the collective mind of Humanity moves to a higher vibration which is difficult to illustrate on the movie screen.

Either way, it sounds pretty religious to me. If people get "ascended", who's doing the ascending? It seemed silly for Clarke to be an atheist and then write a novel with angels that look like devils. But then many of his novels aren't exactly "hard" sci-fi.
@Nachtschicht1
@Nachtschicht1 Жыл бұрын
Although most of what you write is right, you are wrong at the point that earth isn't destroyed in the book. It is destroyed, here is a qote from the last passage of the book: "In a soundless concussion of light, Earth's core gave up its hoarded energies. For a little while the gravitational waves crossed and re-crossed the Solar System, disturbing ever so slightly the orbits of the planets. Then the Sun's remaining children pursued their ancient paths once more, as corks floating on a placid lake ride out the tiny ripples set in motion by a falling stone. There was nothing left of Earth: THEY had leeched away the last atoms of its substance..."

And YES, 2 years BEFORE Jim Crow ended in the south, British Clarke INTENDED to make the last human a Black man. There are two versions, he rewrote the first chapter in 1990 to take into account space crafts and the moon landing

This series has one of the - if not Thē - best build-up/reveals ever. And it totally makes sense for a dude that looks like a literal Demon to act that way. It’s the perfect anti-Abrams’ “mystery box” style of asking questions with no answers. It really capitalizes on its own premise.

The book is so much better than the movies. The screen version leaves out so much detail. The book describes the fact that humanity's shock and horror of what happens whit the overlords arrival actually carries into the past and is the reason the planet has demon myths. So...

A literal demon from what belief? Because if you’re speaking of biblical, demons would’ve looked like angels which were mechanical looking with rings, wings and wheels etc. Demons were only fallen angels so they’d look the same. You’re talking of depictions not literal as there is no literal demon, they don’t have physical form. Please use words correctly. It’s like those who’s say “I’m literally dead”.

This is based on an old arthur c clark novel. A good one to. He was much like ray bradbury a good scifi novelist. It is of course fiction. Not everything is evil. It is our imagination in an attempt to try to find answers. Science is the answer but it is very mundane. How do you think the universe was created by math and science not magic.
@JesusProtects
@JesusProtects Жыл бұрын
@@miscalotastuff733 science is the answer when it's empirical, but every science field that claim to have evidence against the existence of God turns out to be impossible to replicate. Add to this the mountains of scientific frauds trying to prove evolution of the species and cosmic evolution and all the studies and arguments in favor of intelligent design given by scientists that are rejected straight up no matter what they say, and it's clear that your science god is not very honest. But still, they are all accepted as factual truths. Is like a spell, the people defending this ideas are able to convince the others of things like matter can come from nothing by itself and design life after a big explosion, from nothing, again. Nonsense. I've been a proud atheist for 32 years. I have been sold a lie all my young life. We are in the times of apostasy, prophesied in the bible. Is all there but people blinded by pride refuse to read it, and read it with the respect it deserves. If they even dare to read it is always with the fixated idea of trying to find ways to make fun of it and insult it. For the good of your own soul, read the word of God. It has been preserved for thousands of years against hundreds of wars, attempts to corrupt what it says, book burnings, the killing of scribes, false forged manuscripts, etc. You still have it despite all of this, ready to be read, the KJV. Based on the original manuscripts that came from Antioch in times of the apostles. It is there to guide us to the truth of Jesus.

@@alokinzna Oddly enough I can see that. Biblically and practically speaking, I often find it hard to know exactly how much I should fear "the devil": Religion portrays him as pure evil and someone who will lie to you and manipulate you to use and torture you. Yes it's best and sometimes understandable to assume, but at the same time there's the whole "don't judge a book by its cover" thing. The fun fact is, no one knows him personally to have their own idea... while it's easy and a good idea to try talking with God or Jesus, try talking to the devil hoping to get a clear honest answer and nothing bad happening to you in the process or looking shady for it. Knowing how humans tend to associate anything that looks a little dark and has horns and a low pitched voice with pure evil, part of you wonders "okay but is he really that bad"? Especially when there are religions who claim to be Satanist but are more like druids who claim they just worship the Earth and believe in freedom. Obviously I wouldn't take any chances but it's complicated and tangled.

This movie is messed up if you think about it. It holds a lot of truth that those in power hide from us.

.. It's a mini-series. The whole plot is: the aliens stop us from fighting so that our children are under no threat, and thus the next generation evolves beyond us.

Arthur C Clarke & Stanley Kubrick used some concepts from Childhood's End for 2001 A Space Odyssey. Like the replica hotel room and "social disorientation". Source: Space Odyssey Making of a Masterpiece book.

Read the novel. The Christian spin is an invention of the screenwriters adaptation. The book is about the evolution and transformation of Human consciousness, not our demise

17:43 I read this in high school and I didn’t like it, which is unusual for this bookworm. Still, it stuck with me. High school was 30yrs ago! 😅 Still, that isn’t the hallmark of a good book, but of a great writer! Agree?

Read the book. Trust me. It's one of Clarke's best works. Childhood's End. Similar work: Songs of Distant Earth.

The book can be fantastic and hopeful but what if the alien was there to help accelerate & harvesting human consciousness? It is a kinda answer to Fermi Paradox when a Great devourer prevents civilization reach Interstellar Travel! There was important detail on the book was left out, the Overlord forbid Interstellar research!
