Wonderful reaction, Im so sad you didnt see the directors cut though which explains so much more like how Ripleys daughter had died while she was out in space for 50 something years. It also makes the feelings Ripley has for Newt even more beliavable. Continue to slay in the reactions!

@@pst5345, she is in no way even remotely “together with the big blonde guy.” Their vibe is entirely buddy-buddy. I thought that was blatantly obvious to the entire planet. (Really, there isn’t so much as the slightest rumor of romance or eroticism between them.) And we all know about lesbians and their het-male best buds. We also all know about many a lesbian being “mistaken for a man.” It’s an old and classic stereotype. Absolutely nothing in the film even attempts to mark Vasquez as heterosexual, whereas multiple indicators suggest butch lesbian.

What makes Ripley and Sarah Connor such great characters and heroes is that they’re tough while still being feminine. What makes Ripley’s character a all time classic is, The way Ripley is written, it could have been played by a actor of any gender. The focus isn’t on her gender but who the character is as a person. And Sigourney embodies the character. Showing through her acting the essence of vulnerability that happens after a extremely traumatic incident, yet at the same time making sure to hold it together when she knows something has to be done to keep them alive.

One thing I love about this movie is everything that happened on the first movie had consequences on her mental health. She's not this "tough woman" that is a hero "just because" and can take everything like nothing. She's traumatized and you can tell on the first third of the movie and that makes her a believable character. Suffering from PTSD is still considered being "weak" by many and by presenting that "flaw" immediately makes her relatable. She has flaws, she has weaknesses, she's not perfect and can end all Aliens by punching them in the chin with her perfect fist or something. Plus she doesn't start the movie like "yeah I'm a badass, no PTSD here because I'm a hero and I can take it" *shoots a pulse rifle while kicking aliens in the d*ck. And the way they flesh out Ripley's no nonsense character with few scenes, like the meeting scene, the scene where Burke is saying "she has to face the bull by the horns", the scene where she finds out Bishop is an android... They just - show - she's not playing around and that plays into her commanding role - when she needs to decide things, she will, no bullsh*t. That's why later on when she has to take control it feels natural, because before they showed she has the capability to do it.

Yeah, exactly. Also, in the first movie, not only was the crew of the Nostromo made up of civilians (basically space truckers), they didn't know anything about the xenomorphs and every step of the encounter was a new surprise. In this one, they marines are going in trained, armed, and expecting a threat (even though they're dismissive of it) and Ripley's there to give them information from previous experience (Newt too). Plus, the Nostromo crew never really tried to fight the aliens so we don't have any sense of how squishy they might've been. Most of the crew members just turned around to see a giant, scary alien standing in front of them and immediately froze/panicked for the few moments before the alien killed them. Iirc, the only two people who used a weapon in that movie were Ripley (who shot it with the harpoon gun or w/e to knock it out of the ship) and Dallas who had a flamethrower but was killed by the "jazz hands" alien without ever using his weapon. Had any of the Nostromo crew used an actual gun, we might've seen that the xenomorph they faced was just as squishy as these ones.

The Marines had Pulse Rifles, grenades, flamethrowers, and auto-turrets, were trained how to use them, and inflicted massive casualties after suffering heavy losses early (including CO and Squad Sergeant). After the initial ambush all of the Marines went out guns blazing, crazy how this movie had 2nd and 3rd-tier characters doing solid full redemption arcs (Hudson, Gorman). I don't believe it was a broken mother pact because the Queen doesn't decide when the eggs hatch. Ripley was going to leave but when she saw that egg hatch it brought back the painful memories of losing her crew and everyone who suffered when that happened and she just lost it. And your right Ash, Sigourney Weaver still ranks #1 in many polls as the ultimate female badass in films.

Your right that it wasn't a broken pact, the egg hatching was most likely triggered by her walking near it when ready to hatch or it just happened to hatch at that moment but I thought that when it hatched she realised that the facehugger was going to go for them regardless of the queen so she had no choice but to start shoot it and once she did that she had to keep shooting at everything. That head tilt had the look on her face looked like a "Ah s$#t, here we go" or a "F@#k it" moment. I think she had that remembering moment when she saw the captured facehuggers in the medical centre.

The inexperienced Lt. coming in to "lead" a bunch of much more grizzled and hardened soldiers is a well-established trope that Cameron was using in this film. In WW2 and Vietnam etc field officers would get killed, transferred, promoted etc and then these fresh-faced boys just out of University / OCS would be expected to come in mid-campaign and just would not have the level of combat or leadership experience compared to the enlisted ranks, especially the NCOs, who would more often than not be the one to actually take charge of leading the men.

Yeah. Fresh-faced, shaved tails were pretty much sitting ducks the moment they got in country. I remember one story about this officer driving up to his hooch in a fresh and shiny new jeep while having an immaculate uniform with no rank or insignia on. His boots and helmet were waxed. So my Dad told a Sargent and a Montagnard scout to move the jeep all the way down the runway, about 400 yards away. This officer tried to counterman the order, but in mid sentence Dad kicked him square in the chest, knocking him ass-over-tea-kettle down an embankment, and into a muddy ditch. He was cussing and raising hell as he climbed up the hill, and just as he and the two guys came back to the hut, there was three "thumps" from the distant hills. Then BOOM, BOOM, BLAM! Three mortar rounds walked their way to the jeep with the last one landing right on the steering wheel. Dad looked back at the officer and said, "You were saying...Sir?"

Jenette Goldstein , the actress who played Vasquez part, had an interesting Audition for the movie. She actually misunderstood what the movie was about, she understood "Aliens" as in "Illegal Aliens" = Immigrants. So she showed up with the gangsta Latina Thig attire and the attitude. The casting crew loved her so much in that role, that they wrote the character of Vasquez as a Bad Ass Thug Latina. When during the briefing, Hudson says "yeah she though they were talking about Illegals" when she says "Whenever However", it was thus an inside joke about her auditions. She is also playing the part of John Connor's Foster Mother in Terminator 2. Lance Herikssen, the man who played the part of Bishop, was actually supposed to play the part of the Terminator android in the 1st Terminator movie. But in the meantime Cameron saw Arnold Schwarznegger and gave the role to Him. As an apology, he gave the part of Bishop to Lance, so in the end Lance got to play an Android in a Cameron's movie. The Little girl who plays Newt, din't continue her acting carreer, Aliens is the only movie she ever did, she later became a School teacher. A Good chunk of the cast are also part of the 1st Terminator movie, cause Cameron actually shot the Terminator, and while he was doing the post-production on it, he started to shoot for Aliens. Wich proofed to be an enormous amount of work and put him under a LOT of stress, but he still managed to give back to back, 2 of the most iconic ScyFy movies in the past 3 decades... The shooting of Aliens was NOT a leasure walk... The shooting of the movie was done in England, and the english crew members, din't like that young unknowed American director, fillingin the shoes of their compatriote Ridley Scott.(the director of the 1st Alien) And they made EVERYTHING possible in their power to make Cameron's every waking time of the day a Headache inducing nightmare for him... Cameron is a workaholic and a perfectionist, he will spend UNGODLY amount of time shooting and tweak stuff around till he gets the shot and the scene that HE wants and how he imagined it. Wich to the UK crew...was nonsens, so they would deliberatly go on lunch or tea break in the middle of shooting scenes etc..., to the point that the coffee/tea cart was thrown away by Cameron in an excess of rage..., and even when senior Executives from the WB came around to mitigate and damage control, the crew still was being unproffesional... Cause no matter what anyone said, to them Cameron was a no name director that came outta nowhere and was imposed by the studio and they din't see why. So someone got an idea (can't remember who) since he was about finished with the post-Production of Terminator, he made a private screening of the movie for the whole crew. After the movie was over, they all looked at each other and admitted that there was more to this young man than they thought, and so they worked in a more proffesional way afterwards. When they did the last scene and where done shooting, Cameron told them that it was a Great Pain in the Arse working with them and a great Displeasure and that he hoped that he would NEVER work with any of them ever again, and just flew back to LA to start the post-prod of Aliens.

Ripley is the female character that every current writers in Hollywood Wish to replicate but are failing, today we got "karens demanding the manager" type of female characters or just unrelatable mary sues.I was born in 1982 , my mother showed me aliens when i was like 10 -11 years old , it was her favorite movie and Ripley was her favorite Character , Ripley has been since that time my favorite female character ever .
@TheGunderian
@TheGunderian Жыл бұрын
Karens refer to a right-wing female 'hero' The problem with fake female heroes, and male too, is that the stories are woke. This means there is a pretext objective to the plot which precedes the story's purpose. This lacks honesty; we know when we are being fed an agenda, versus being told a genuine story. Because studios promote wokeness, which is easy and lazy, writers are not rewarded for creating unique characters such as Ripley. These new ideas cannot emerge in this poisoned creative environment, because the first mission is to sell a political narrative. Any unique story or strong new character would risk deviating from the allowed narrative, which is not supported, rewarded or ultimately allowed.

Some of the dreams were cool af and very vivid, but I was truly terrified by this movie. These days you get 100 monsters for 2,50 in Netflix, but back in the day it was so much more rare and it had so much more impact on a young person's imagination.

Well the first movie had a work crew that were in no way equipped to take care of the alien. In this movie it’s a bunch of space marines armed to the teeth. It makes sense they’d fair better than a crew of workers.

Exactly. Also, in the first movie, the crew of the Nostromo never really fought the alien or used any weapons. They mostly just turned around to see an unexpectedly giant and horrific alien standing in front of them, froze in fear, and then were immediately killed. The only two weapons in the movie (iirc) were the harpoon gun Ripley used to knock the alien out of the ship and the flamethrower Dallas carried but never really used before the alien jumped out with the "jazz hands" and killed him. Had any of them actually used a gun, we might've seen that alien be squishy too. I feel like the xenomorph in "Alien" is so frightening and seems like such a perfect predator, it's easy to make the assumption that it's nearly impossible to kill. There's nothing in the movie that says that though.

The true thing that made Cameron next level during this era is the way he made this movie and Terminator 2 as extensions of the original movie storylines. Most sequels are retreads that try to hit all the same notes, but in Aliens and T2 there's a much stronger sense of the story moving forward. The sequels do something completely new and different to the originals and it makes them so much better as a result.

Your girlfriend correctly identified Michael Biehn as being in 'The Terminator'. James Cameron is famous for using actors from his prior movies in his future movies. Lance Henriksen who was the android in this movie was one of the detectives in 'The Terminator'...Michael Biehn was Kyle Reece in 'The Terminator' and went on to be in 'The Abyss' along with 'Aliens'. Bill Paxton was the first biker killed in 'The Terminator' and went on to be in 'True Lies' and 'Titanic'. Jenette Goldstein was Vasquez in 'Aliens' and went on to play John Connor's adoptive mom in 'Terminator 2' and had a cameo in 'Titanic'. A couple of these folks (Henriksen, Goldstein and Paxton) also worked together on a kitschy vampire flick called 'Near Dark' that was directed by Kathryn Bigelow who (I believe) was briefly married to James Cameron. You can see how much James Cameron ruled the 80s and 90s after his breakthrough with 'The Terminator', and that is why he was picked to helm 'Aliens'. Arguably one of the few sequels that amps up the original movie.

Vasquez and Drake's "smartgun" (heavy machine gun) were modeled after the WWII German MG 42 Belt-fed machine gun.
