The reason for Clarice's lamb story, Ash, is to show that, even as a child, she wanted to protect the innocent from violence. However, after she was caught trying to run off with the one lamb she was able to get out of the pen, the lamb was slaughtered anyway and Clarice was traumatized by what she saw as her failure to save it. And that failure - symbolized by the screaming of the lambs that she heard when they were being slaughtered - has haunted her ever since (and likely drove her to pursue a career in law enforcement). This is why, earlier in the film, Hannibal says to Clarice, "You think if Catherine lives, you won’t wake up in the dark ever again to that awful screaming of the lambs." Then, later, when Clarice has solved the case, killed Buffalo Bill, and saved Catherine from the well, Hannibal asks her, "Well, Clarice. Have the lambs stopped screaming?" i.e. Now that you've succeeded at saving an innocent, does that ease your feelings of guilt for not being able to save the lambs?

This is in my opinion, one of the top three movies of ALL TIME. It won the big five at the oscars, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. Phenomenal work of art with amazingly complex characters and Jodie's portrayal of Clarice is something we will never see again - Clarice Starling is a very complex and relatable character who isn't overpowered, impossibly strong for her size- but rather an intelligent individual who is relentlessly embracing her femininity. Through her pure intentions and authenticity, Jodie's character became a symbol of divine power motivated by pure desires to save weaker individuals in her world. Despite the fact she will never be as physically strong as the men who tower over her, she preservers because she sees saving other innocent lives as a parallel to saving the lambs. The whole point Jodie was trying to make was that in the past, since women didn't have the strength or "heroism" that could compare to men, Hollywood often resorts to crafting lazy, unrealistic female heroines (i.e marvel women) who possess unfathomable qualities and don't come across as relatable at all. Besides this, often the only redeeming quality of women's characters in film is their attractiveness, or their relevance is limited to being as the love interest to their male costars. The Silence of the Lambs changed that when Clarice Starling appeared on screen. The producers took the time to flesh out Jodie's character, Clarice, thereby allowing this talented actress to portray an authentic female role who embodies the characteristics of someone motivated by a well-developed moral compass rather than such trivial, one-dimensional motifs (a relief for audiences). She is then juxtaposed against her male colleagues, almost all of whom are motivated purely by advancement rather than the cause itself.

11:25 A big part of Clarice's personality is that she's very class and status conscious. It's a major motivation and a major vulnerability for her. The book makes this aspect of her character much more clear, and the dramatic shift in her personality in the sequel book and sequel movie only makes sense if you understand that about her.

Lecter is a cold-blooded psychopath who likes to show off his superior intellect by toying with people by pulling at their most sensitive psychological levers. He was doing it to f--k with her, not because he has some sort of morality about her being dressed professionally. And he makes the comment about loving her suit because his moral compass is so absent that he thinks the rest of what he just did as friendly banter, as well. So, no, Ash totally whiffed on that. She wasn't dressed up because she didn't care about her daughter. She was dressed up because she was one of the most powerful politicians in the USA, with the army of "handlers" to make sure she'd never go on TV looking like she was completely destroyed. And why would you give a psychopath THAT much of a rush of power of letting them know you're completely destroyed? That would doom her daughter that much faster, I'd think.

@@AndyMatts44 Agreed! It was an interesting idea by Ash, but people in these comments are really projecting a lot! There's no indication that Senator Martin and Catherine had a strained relationship. Even in the book, which I have read, they didn't really say that. Also all the stuff about her being a corrupt politician...um, how would they know anything about her professional ethics? Is the reason she was dressed nicely because she's a Senator and is used to being image conscious even in stressful situtations, and has a staff who's job it is to make sure that she's prepped and put together at all times? Yes, of course! Because that's how the world works when you're a public figure! That isn't some indications that she doesn't love her daughter and doesn't give a shit that she was abducted by a serial killer. FFsake, grow up. Besides, this is a lose-lose thing for her, because if she did appear in public in dirty sweats with her hair a mess, bawling her eyes out, people would say she's overdoing it and probably is just putting a show to garner sympathy.

Never made that conection before, but after reading the main comment it clicked just now. I have watched the movies and read the novels years ago, when they first were released. Protecting and saving the innocent was what drove Clarice. The one thing Hannibal couldn't do - saving his little sister. She was slaughtered and eaten before his eyes by hungry soldiers when he is only a boy. If I am not wrong, his whole family is killed during WWII in Russia. At some point the hunger there were so bad because of the occupation, that people started to eat the dead. I think Tomas Harris based Hannibal on several serial killers, one of which is Chikatilo, who was also a cannibal with over 50 victims. It is assumed that he has witnesed cannibalism or even ate human meat when he was a child. I think Hannibal sees in Clarice the savior, the pure soul, that he needed to save his sister... Dunno. I am just assuming.

This is my first time watching the two of you. This one of my top five favorite movies. I’ve always thought Dr. Lector’s comment about the senator’s suit was random, but it’s not. It was about the fact that she’s still well put together considering her daughter has been abducted by a serial killer. Most people wouldn’t care at the moment.

47:08: Yes. There are 4 other movies. Manhunt came out before this one (but that one has Brian Cox, the guy who played Striker in X-Men 2, as Hannibal). The other 3 take place in the same universe as this movie: Hannibal is a direct sequel except with Julianne Moore as Clarice, Red Dragon is a prequel and Hannibal Rising, as the name implies, is Hannibal’s origin story.

This isn’t accurate. Although he had spoken to the FBI about ideas on the Green River Killer, little was accurate and what was could only be interpreted after the fact and was clearly nothing more than an educated guess. More BS to make a terrible human seem like some super being. The man was certainly no Hannibal Lecter, just like he wasn’t half as handsome as public sentiment remembers him. He was just another loser murderer.

@@MojiBeau So what do we do with the investigating detective's (Reichert) credit to Bundy for helping get inside the mind of Greenriver? It was not Bundy's fault that investigators did not listen when he said to stake out the bodies since (as part of his profile) the killer would return to visit the bodies. They could have stopped him long before he was actually caught.

He obviously does not care about the girl or her family or that they are considered more important than others, he is the authority now. He gives Clarice all she needs to crack the case because she is the underdog and he wants her to do it alone or die trying.

The use of the Chrysalis is symbolic of 'becoming', just as Buffalo Bill was wanting to 'become' as a Moth emerging from it's cuccoon. Also, did you catch the symbolism behind the man with 'crossed eyes' who was flirting with Clarice who was the only gentleman she even slightly reciprocated with by way of conversation, he was the only one who gave her the respect of being honest and up front with her.. 😉 Also, to 'Covet' is to desire something someone else has. Ash was right, Lecter never desires to hurt Clarice.. coincidentally Lecter only 'eats' people who are disrespectful or have bad manners or are impolite, he is a cannibal with standards.. 😋 The final scene in the basement when Bill has the night vision goggles on and he reaches for her hair, he is 'coveting' it.. he had plenty of time to bash her head in if he so desired but what he wanted was the crowning glory to his suit, her hair, most likely her entire scalp so he could wear it like a hoody..

Actually part of the genius of the directing is that Clarice always looks slightly off-centre from the camera, thus distinguishing her from Hanibal & the men in the film who look directly at the camera, meaning a) it makes it clear that Clarice is our central character because everyone else is viewed directly from her perspective, and b) it makes us as the audience feel the creepiness of the men even more because we experience it from her POV, as though they're looking at us.

Dude - Good call on the "I'll bet you'd destroy that lamb if it was on the plate" comment! One of my favorite meals was when my mom would prepare for me a leg of lamb with garlic cloves, small roasted potatoes, with mint jelly. I took part on the 1991 Gulf War, where I was an advisor to the Egyptian Army forces. They fed us goat and rice every day. Goat and rice for lunch ... goat and rice for dinner. Every damned day. When I returned home after the war and made the trip to visit my mom (having been away nearly nine months), she prepared lamb for me. Apparently, I had a "look" on my face. My mom had to assure me that this was lamb NOT goat.

Ted Bundy would pretend to be handicapped (broken arm etc) to get women to drop their defense and it worked, he was able to abduct two women in broad daylight at a crowded lake. Buffalo Bill’s character and his skin fascination comes from Ed Gein who used the skin of his victims to make things out of, a nipple belt, human skin lamp shade…the list goes on.
