Taiji Part 2 - thankfully, there are no apples in these trees. There are, however, interesting puzzles. What kind of system are we working with? Also featuring the platform and binary sections.

12:36 I think the black and white coloured pillars gives the logic table for the nearby puzzles Going from the 4 pillars below 00 is black 10 is white 01 is white 11 is black Which are the rules for an xor gate (or xnor if you assign white 0 and black 1) A similar thing happens with the four digit pillars on the red wire puzzle, all the columns with an odd number of 1's were white hence the rule

That binary puzzle section is just so genius on how it plays with your expectations. The first one is made specifically to look like subtraction which fits exactly how most people would think binary would be used, maths. So you carry on with that knowledge and it subverts it by showing your first assumption was wrong even when it fit the original puzzle perfectly. The slow merging of the numbers to show how to understand the filled square was just so nicely done. And the ever presence of the dot showing direction without you knowing until it swaps sides is just the sort of detail that makes it so good. The information is always part of every puzzle, you just don't see it until the "AH HA" moment where it clicks. In the end it is what you would expect from binary, just with one of the slightly more obscure operations you can apply with it using XOR. This is just beautiful, clean puzzle design. I'm in love with this game!

@@pyromaniachimbo It's also not hard to work out what would happen if you tried to extend XOR to additional inputs the same way you would with AND or OR. If the first two are 1s, then you'd get a 0 which would be XOR'd with the third 1 and result in 1.

12:50 the "it's only 1 if both input are different" is called an XOR or "exclusive or" and is something very common and useful in boolean (read binary) logic There's an expansion of it to multiple inputs and that usually is defined as a position is 1 if there's an odd number of 1s in its input. Basically you just first take the xor output of two lines then the output with the next line and so on

With the final puzzle, its probably easier to visualize by splitting it into two rows, where the squares being places where one row gets a 1, and the other gets a 0 (just undo how the game showed the square merge). Depending on which which row gets what, the 2nd or 6th xor, is true, leading to the two symmetrical answers.

The solid square is reading 1 and 0 from different directions but it's not magic. It can be solely deduced from the game's rule. The puzzle at the entrance of the tomb hall is the first hint: you have an overlapped dot, which means two sequence are squashed together, and the solid square means an one and an zero get squashed, so it is 1 in one sequence and 0 in the other sequence. Since we only care about how many 1's in one spot, it becomes 1 in its corresponding position. The final puzzle is a left-to-right sequence squashed with a right-to-left sequence. If we ignore solid square for now, the ltr sequence is: 0 1 0 ? 1 ? 1, and the rtl sequence is 1 ? 1 ? 0 1 0. Let x be the value of the first solid square in ltr sequence and y be the value of the second solid square in ltr. Now ltr sequence is 0 1 0 x 1 y 1, and the rtl sequence should be: 1 ~y 1 ~x 0 1 0, where ~x is the opposite of x. Now it is easy to see the answer would be 1 (1 ~y) 1 1 1 (1 y) 1, because there must be exactly one 1 within x and ~x. And the number of 1's in (1, ~y) must be different from that in (1, y), so toggle one of them is the right answer.
@Schilani
@Schilani Жыл бұрын
For me the last one was such a brainfart. Because before they had both lines overlapping from the same side and one dot, so I thought you would have read both lines again from each side. So I pretty much ended up with 4 lines because of that thinking. Because the pillars outside had four lines as well, so surely there would be a need for a puzzle with four lines in that area, right?!

The rule for the binary sections is (I think): 1+0=1, 0+0=0 and 1+1=0. If all add to 1 then yes, if all add to 0 then no. That's I believe how computers add numbers (1s and 0s). Note: The even-odd analogy is a good one, it gives the same results.

Knowing about XOR actually messed me up in the game. Although it made it easier for me to solve the main puzzles, I was slow to get the interpretation that is used in the section that introduces more than 2 rows of numbers, even though it's a much simpler interpretation. I thought extensions of XOR would be more like "equals 1" (00 is no 1's, 01 is one 1, 11 is two 1's, so this is why it could be thought of as "equals one"), then got curveballed until I realized "odd" or "each 1 toggles it" are both way easier ways to think of it :p

At 17:00, the 0s and 1s in the middle rows weren't read by the dots. I think that means the 0s represented the original position, and the 1s represented a fully inverted position from the 0s (note that the left and right are opposites) thus the alternating 0s and 1s of the middle row of the middle grave represented alternating between the original and inverted graves to its left and right.

As someone who regularly uses binary addition and XOR stuff the binary section was painful, but I also am not good at many of the other puzzles you do so I can't judge too hard!

I was wathing you doing the final 4 binary puzzles in a wrong way, and you still got it right. BTW the pillars with binary numbers, show you how you you read the colums from the top, while reading the numbers from the "dots" so if a column is white, the according button in the puzzle needs to be white (pressed). i don't really know how to explain it better and sorry for bad english.

I was internally screaming at him not realizing that the binary literally represented on with a 1 and off with a 0.

18:02 the pillars portrait the right and wrong amount of ones you can have. All the white pillars have an odd number of ones.

the binary rule is positive (1) output (you had the right idea of "1 = light" but for the wrong way) Also: The white pillars show valid answers

I think the tombstones with binary on them are white and black to show what does and doesn’t work, like the one with 00 on it is black, the ones with 01 and 10 are white, and the one with 11 is also black

The white pillars with binary actually show which combinations are correct

He figured it out even though the rules were on the big tombstones. Black tombstones mean unlit and White ones mean lit. Which also might mean that there will be 4 row binary, have fun.

I've been playing through the game and I only have one section left and I'm absolutely stumped, it's been really fun but the puzzles in it can be hard to decipher

Great game! That saod. One thing I didn't like about this game, the teleport system is really not obvious. You have to go to map pillars and do the pattern of another section on it to access it.o
