I bought one several years ago to keep me but wound up buying a larger laptop when I had to send it in for a buzzing sound it made. I got it back and just stored it but the other day I fried my bigger laptop (liquid spill) and so I'm typing this sentence on it now and play some of my older games on it. Its holding me fine until I get my new laptop in (still operating on Windows 7).

I had an Alienware 14 as my first PC gaming machine ever and was super excited about it back in the day. Except mine has a 1366x769p IPS display, 500GB HDD, i5 4200u dual core, and a GT 750m 2GB. Played Killing Floor 2 on it mostly.

Everybody hates on Alienware because there "over priced". Yes you probably can find other laptops with the same internal specs for $500 cheaper. Alienware focuses on the little things, or big in my opinion. Look when they compare the sound... The ASUS is terrible compared to the Alienware. Also the heat... Some MSI/Razer Blades will feel like your playing in your fireplace. Also the screen is way clearer and has much less glare. The AlienFX just put the eye candy over the top, only someone who truly enjoys gaming will see how much an extra $500 will get you.
@HardwareCanucks
@HardwareCanucks 10 жыл бұрын
We would agree with you! Alienware despite being in the higher price bracket, is an amazing machine to own. the display, the cooling, speakers, keyboard and trackpad are all done right and many of these are so often terrible on Asus and MSI laptops.

Still have and use my 2014 model with the i5. I upgraded Ram a few days ago to 16GB and it continues to work great. Battery has been replaced and I really only use it while plugged in because you'll only get about 3 hours out of it. It's heavy and bulky, but the lighting effects and durability still hold true. I mostly play WOTs and WOWs on this rig at High settings and have on average 55 - 60 FPS so no complaints and if you use Geforce Now it really doesn't matter anymore. Oh and I've never had a laptop last past 3 years, so kuddos to Alienware for making a great product!

Ok I understand you guys think that alienware is overpriced. But think about this way. Alienware has been improving there quality and you are paying for the design. Some people like the image of there laptop and thats 100% understandable. Just chill and take a deep breath. Certain people like looks and fancy lights and they want to pay. I own a alienware 17 and I have a custem built desktop. I love both systems. You cant get the design of alienware anywhere else so thats why its so expensive. The lighting on this thing is a main selling factor and it does the job well done! Before you start ranting about how bulky it is, then why is alienware temps are so good compared to the razer blade? I rather have a system that is bulky and does not overheat and die in 2 years from frying the components. Think First!

I've been using this laptop for about 7 years now. Cons: I had to replace the hard drive. battery life is close to 0, not even close to a gaming laptop anymore, It's not really portable. Pros: The quality of the device is fucking insane, I've been using it for about 7 years, and it still is many times faster than the average mid range laptop. I actually think the display is pretty good too, and for daily tasks. 16gb of ram is plenty in my opinion even tho is gddr3. you can find this laptop for about 250-350usd, and for that price range, there's no chance you can find a similar performing new laptop.

I have a Lenovo Z710 (from 2013), has an i7-4700MQ, the GPU then died, changed the entire motherboard, now i have GTX 840M. 1TB HDD. Temperatures below 76 degrees on gaming, when the CPU goes to 100%, thanks to undervolting, it reaches 82-85°C, no thermal throttling and fan noise, ultimate high end perfomance for the average of laptops and perfect for music production, also 16GB. The price was 1000$, thanks to many tweaks that i did to the CPU, i beat a Sandy Bridge desktop i7-2600K in Geekbench and CPU-Z in singlethread and multithread.

I gamed on this for almost 3 years before I built my own PC. I had the GT 750m not a GTX and the same CPU with 8GB of ram (i had to upgrade from 4GB) and it was DECENT. I played DayZ, Arma 3, GTA V and a few other games on it and it did okay on low settings. I had to replace the battery 3 times in a 3 year window and the charger once. But, I would not recommended this laptop to anyone looking to buy it. WAY over-priced and had a lot of issues. Only snag one if it's an amazing deal.

Case is anodized aluminum, the surfaces are magnesium alloy covered in a soft touch rubberized coating. The only thing plastic is the bottom cover that slides on and off to cover the battery. To be clear, not plastic. It does smudge up like crazy though. Better keep a cloth handy.

2000 dollars?? My brother got a lenovo laptop with 2 gpus, an i74700mq and 8 gigs of ram for $1000 and he got a keyboard and monitor to make a setup. It can run bf4 high 60 fps. Pretty good for a laptop at that price but the drawback is that if you use it without an external keyboard the one on the laptop gets hot because of the two gpu's.

Those complaining about chunky gaming laptops, here's the issue with the thin ones: They're fucking expensive - yes, we're on an Alienware video and they're OP, but compare them to Clevo and MSI and there is no competition in price/performance. You can pretty much pay half and get the same performance but with better cooling. The battery life is awful wherever you go - to fit in high end components and especially in a thin chassis, there's no space for battery nor a particular care for battery life. That means you need to be tethered to a wall and that in itself undermines the usefulness of the portability of these thin laptops. Machines like the Alienware 17 surprisingly can get around 4 hours of life doing menial tasks. The cooling is sub par - MSI's GE60 has been proven to pretty much catch fire when playing gaming, with the entire machine getting warm. While machines like the Blade 14 and the X7 seem to be able to handle themselves, you still aren't going to get the overclocking headroom available in larger notebooks. Clevos/Alienware/ASUS/MSI "chunky" gaming notebooks can see overclocks in the range of multiple 100s of MHz which significantly boosts gaming performance. They're completely unupgradeable - while some of these notebooks might let you swap out storage, memory and perhaps wireless interfaces you're stuck with that GPU however you look at it. This means in 2 years, no, you won't be able to run the latest games at max, and yes, your machine has depreciated a large amount. High end Clevo/MSI/Alienware machines have MXM slots which means that you can indeed swap out graphics cards (albeit not for a small fee) and potentially hugely increase system performance. Most people don't WANT to move their notebook around a lot - Many people's reason for buying a gaming notebook is simply because of lack of space or because they want to have a machine that's portable to go to LAN parties and the like. It acts like a desktop replacement. While your Blade or whatever may be lighter and smaller than a chunky gaming notebook, it's still got to go in a bag and be carried to wherever your LAN party is and you're not going to be carrying it around while you game because you don't have 3 hands. So wherever it goes, it's going to be stationed. You're likely to take your car or public transport there so weight doesn't really matter. Even if you're carrying it, you can handle a very significant amount of weight if you're wearing a half decent rucksack (backpack).

Ah perhaps it was the GS70. www.notebookcheck.net/Review-MSI-GS70-65M21621-Notebook.102287.0.html I do find it funny how people say things are "optimised" with GeForce Experience. It literally means "The software turns down the settings for me".

I concur. MSI GT72, Alienware line and ASUS' G750 esque notebooks all look great. It's not as if they're the sort of thing you'd carry everywhere and that's what tablets/phones are for IMO.

I have the AlienWare14 laptop, when I play minecraft without the ac plugged in I get about 15 - 25 FPS when I run the game with G-Force graphics I get about 60 - 100 FPS. However when the ac is plugged in I get 25 - 35 FPS with the G-Force I get about 80 - 120 - 250 FPS. It's weird how your computer preforms faster with the ac plugged in than without it plugged in. Also if I run Minecraft I go to task manager and go to details, right click java and click set infinity and deselect all boxes besides one, this will make sure my game doesn't use all CPU's and heat up my laptop.

I remember before I got an Alienware I used a dell windows 8 PC laptop. It ran games pretty good. But when the lights were shut off I couldn't see where I was typing on the keyboard I had to use a flashlight. Also when the sun shines through my window, I had to turn the brightness all the way up which causes the battery to run out faster and even that didn't always work. The glare was horrendous. I got an Alienware 14 and it ran games twice as good, I could use the lights on the keyboard to see where I was typing in the dark and the anti glare display it awesome. For 2K the Alienware specs might not seem to impressive because you can probably get the same specs on a laptop for just 1.5K but the practical use of it is in fact, amazing. Spec's aren't everything, think about if its practical for everyday use. I give Alienware 14 a 10/10. Its an excellent laptop.

I have such a hard time in understanding the reason to buy a "gaming laptop". They are more expensive than normal desktops and the portability is awesome but... you have at most an hour of battery life while gaming which is spread to 3-4 hours on normal use. I just don't feel that I HAVE to game for the 1 hour at an airport or when I am on a trip. If I need to have internet access and a pc I would buy a netbook, ultrabook or even a mac. Laptops are made for portability, not for processing heavy power. It's getting really close but it is not there yet.

Literally THE ONLY thing that AW got right, the thickness. I have no Idea why you'd expect a thin paper-like notebook to preform like anything and stay reasonably cool. Where the hell are they going to put the components/heatsinks? On your face?

ali abdallah Right, so in order for them to make a profit, they need to make the cost of the blade higher than should be.

At that price point, just save up a little bit more and get the Asus 750 JZ (lowest priced model $2,249) , well, even the lower bracketed 750JS ($1,748.99) and 750 JM ($1,278.95) are equipped with much better graphics cards than this.

I bought the same spec Alienware 14 for 1200 dollars...I guess it's an ok deal? lol my msata over heats really badly and I'm not sure if it's because it's too close to the heat sink and the thermal paste is just not doing its job properly. my msata (samsung 840evo?) rises from around 30C to 65C just on start up, it quickly goes to 71C after about 10 minutes of Torchlight 2. I have to take the msata side of the air filter off and put it on top of my notepal U2 plus with both of the cooler's fans directly under the msata to keep it cool...now my msata stays around 40C on normal tasks and up to 51 after hours and hours of gaming. I just want to know if mine is just been stupid or does all the 14 have the same problem with the msata heating up thing....

Love this little Alienware but have trouble getting latest graphics installed from NVIDIA who is not good at keeping up with the older GTX785.I also have the 18,4 Alienware with the dual CPUs GTX860m..same problem.Other than that plays BO3 fine.Not so with Cold War...keeps saying I need driver updates. My first Alienware was an M11 but was quite a laptop back then. Good review.
