I do believe that we can hear the Holy Spirit but we also hear our agendas, wants, and damage. Everything must be tested by Scripture.

For years, I felt like I was told to read other books other than the Bible because they were promoted as truthful. It is when I started to read my bible first and pray for wisdom that I realized that these authors were telling me lies and that the Bible was my first source to go to for truth. I rejected a lot of what I was taught as I met wise and spiritual mentors who showed me how to really read the Bible.

Holy spirit walks hand in hand with scripture. He talks with us and he walks with us and tells us things that God wants us to do, but he will never go against the word.

Christianity definitely needs to return to sound doctrine and stop being afraid and tolerant of false teachings!

When we pray we talk to God. When we study Gods Word, God talks to us.

I can relate to the video and so many of the comments. I cannot in good faith even think about what i left behind in my last NAR, hypercharsimatic church. I struggle with whether or not to speak to my old "mentor". I am praying and thank you ladies for helping me along this journey. Another Gospel is a fantastic book- I can relate to needing that life boat many times. It was through Gods mercy truth was revealed. I pray constantly and I read by bible daily. I see the error everywhere now. The work is not yet done! Thanks ladies.

Those who sincerely get into God's word, the Bible, can always find something new and refreshing, even from a passage read many times before. What a joy to be limited to God's Word!

I am not a hyper-charismatic GOD centered, spirit lead, Bible believing Christian but I am a spirit lead, Bible believing, GOD centered (Father, Son & Holy Spirit) charismatic Christian!

This is so good! I came out of the hyper-charismatic movement. I had to literally throw all my experiences /dreams/ visions/ & whatever else.... down at the feet of Jesus and put my trust and let scripture become the authority in my life. When I dove into the actual Word, God opened my eyes to the truth and I’m so grateful to him and for you both because you both put a lot of truth into my life as well. ❤️

As a Charismatic, and definitely not a hyper Charismatic, i agree 💯 percent that all things must pass the Bible test. I am very concerned about what I’m seeing in the NAR. I know people whom I love that have been blinded by this movement. It’s very hard to fellowship because they now think I am deceived, since I reject what i believe to be the false prophets and teachers.

Grammatrain performed about 200 shows our first year of touring.we must have had 50 or 60 well meaning people prophesy over us.The thing was however that they all pretty much contradicted each other and rarely would we hear a prophesy that lined up with another one and I can’t say if I remember any one of them ever coming true. After 4 years of touring I became convinced we were prophet magnets. Too bad non of them came true we were supposed to be rich and famous by now! and my family could really use some of that RICH LOL!!

I am a huge proponent of experiencing the presence of God. I got saved at 15 years old, and had tremendous encounters with God in prayer. I was addicted to drugs, cigarettes and alcohol, then I got saved at a small Church in Baltimore, MD. And God washed all of my addictions away. I do agree that many in hyper charismatic circles abuse the concept of having an “experience” with God. And they value it over studying and obeying the written word. But for me that certainly has never been the case. In fact quite the opposite. The hours I spent in prayer hearing and feeling the presence of Holy Spirit, induced a greater appetite within in me to study Gods word. I was taught from a young age to test the prophetic words spoken over my life by the scriptures. So I never placed a great deal of value on anything that was said by pastors or so-called prophets if it didn’t line up with the scriptures. I agree with most of what you have stated, however, the one thing I take exception with is the statement made by the young lady on the left. “If you’re hearing God speak to you audibly what incentive do you have to study your Bible.” Paul had several encounters where Jesus appeared to him, and other encounters were the Holy Spirit spoke to him. Those experiences never led him to the conclusion, “what’s the point in me studying the word when I have the ability to hear from God audibly?” The revealed word creates a greater appetite for the written word. If it doesn’t then it’s not God speaking to you. And if it contradicts the written word in anyway, it’s not God speaking to you.

Melissa this is SO on point!!! I have been speaking back and forth with a woman about some of the teachings that she is believing and she basically told me yesterday I have the religious Pharisee spirit... I too have heard her say that we let our minds get in the way. If you see this or anyone else happens to see this please say a prayer that she would be responsive to the gospel. She has been under these lies for 40 years. I am meeting her for coffee this Tuesday and I'm going to show her this video and we are going to talk some things through. I am so passionate about this specific topic and the prosperity gospel... I'm seeing the deception of these play out in my community and it is so sad. Keep it up sisters! I've received harsh criticism about sharing truth, but I'm trying to be led by the spirit and pick the battles he wants me to engage in.

I lean more charismatic but I want to avoid the extremes. If it doesn't line up with God's Word then I want to check it and keep it in check. I always hate hearing the phrase "worship experience." I want an "encounter." I can have an "experience" with anything, because it's just feelings based, but a true encounter with God, in worship, prayer, reading His Word is transformative. My husband shared a sermon by David Wilkerson titled "don't judge your spiritual growth by how you feel." That title in itself is powerful but the whole sermon is a good listen.

As I understand it now, part of the confusion is people (denominations) tend to treat people as one dimensional. They either focus on the intellect or emotional or spiritual and ignore the whole of scripture that guides and teaches in all of these areas, “ Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and strength”. God wants all of us

No problem with charismatic believers allowing the Holy Spirit to have His way and sticking to Scripture parameters. Huge problems with hyper-charismatics who may or may not be saved believers sidestepping Scripture and opening themselves up to the deceptions of 'another spirit'. All things in the church are to be done decently and in order and God is not the author of confusion. With hyper-charismatics, confusion too often abounds and the manifestations indecent and out of order. Gives the game away that God is not among them when the strange stuff happens and more likely to be the work of Kundalini forces in a 'Christian' guise. We need to know the difference between the Holy and the profane.

Thank you for this video. As a Pentecostal pastor for 40 years, I have had to deal with this. The first and possibly second generations of charismatics were not like what you have described. Except for the Roman Catholic charismatics, the Protestants charismatics were more into the Word. Things changed in the 1990s when the New Order of the Latter Rain had a resurgence and began influencing independent charismatic churches. Paul and Jan Crouch and TBN didn't help much either.

First 4 mins sums up very well, this whole " you need an encounter" teaching that is so deceptive/seductive. We are born again, we have the spirit of christ in us, christ in you the hope of glory, we know we have past from death to life, eternal life. So why keep looking for more out there, like oh dear, may be what Jesus did isn't quite enough, may be I'm missing out on some thing. No way, he really has given us every thing we need for life and godliness. God bless every one

The Holy Spirit is the objective source of truth. It takes the Holy Spirit to interpret the Bible. Without our inner Teacher, all interpretations are subjective. John 14.26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Jesus Himself talked about hearing His "voice", and you can't eradicate that, or change it in any way. Why would we have to? We need to differentiate between the "hearing" He is talking about and the false experiences they are talking about. See, God the Holy Spirit leading, guiding etc: those are experiences of God, too. So to damn experience as the problem won't do, since those experiences of God are profound and we are not to condemn them or belittle them. It is just difficult to talk about the real vs the false, since the devil specializes in counterfeiting the true with very different, ungodly things, which sometimes sound very similar, in spite of the fact that they are experiences of God, on the one hand, and demons, on the other. So why are we not upholding the true experiences of God: the ones the Bible teaches? Besides treating real experiences of the Holy Spirit, as if they were unclean, the failure to differentiate the two, and uphold the true, throws people into a situation in which there is nothing left but human reasoning to interpret the Bible. That is relying on the flesh, since neither logic nor the reasoning done through it are spirit: they are nothing but flesh. Arguments that the Bible is too simple to misunderstand, are, first of all, untrue, but either way, they do not change the fact that relying on logic and reasoning are relying on an arm of flesh. We are told not to lean on our own understanding, much less to deify it, although there are some people on the scene of the comments boards, etc, who try to say that logic is our only experience of God, or that John 1 is trying to say that both the written and the living Word of God is the same as the Greek idea of _logos._ What John was saying is almost the opposite, that Jesus Christ is the true _logos_ which everything was created by, in contrast to the concept in Greek philosophy. Whether we fall for heretical ideas like those, or not, the Bible teaches a supernaturally _real_ new birth, with a real indwelling of the real Holy Spirit. If the word of God is truly the sword of the Spirit, it is not one that He has hung on his wall as a memento, but one He actively uses, to guide us, discipline and comfort us. That's the true teaching of the Bible.

The Desert Fathers and the Early Church were mystical. They believed in genuine union with Christ.

“Experience is your truth”…. Is a perfect definition of MOST Charismatic churches I’ve seen. Anytime someone calls out the “demon slayers” or “faith healers”, for their absurd practices, the response is always “Well my EXPERIENCE tells me it’s legit”… or “I FELT something, so I know it’s real.” When Scripture makes it clear our feelings, experiences, and emotions CANNOT be trusted, only scripture can. Scripture tells us the “hearts of man our evil”. Millions of Muslim believe that Allah is doing miracles in their life because of their EXPERIENCE. Millions of Hindus believe the same with their gods. We go off the word of God… not our “feelings” or “experiences.”

Jesus said we would here His voice. Certainly the devil can speak and our own soul can speak. The Bible does not give us personal instructions on our life decisions. God talks to me about me so I can follow His plan for my life, and on occasion He gives me words for others. I find it difficult to believe that a person can be born again and living for Jesus and not know His voice.

I am so thankful that both of you are alerting people of these practices that are infiltrating the church. Thank you for encouraging others to pick up the Book and read. I truly believe people will get informed when they do. Sorcery, fortune telling, magic divination are all forbidden. There’s a lot of practices some in the church are doing and they don’t even realize it. Please keep addressing these issues.

Interesting topic. Part of the problem comes when a person seeks the gifts just for the experience rather than seeking the Lord ( giver of the gifts) and his purposes. If a person is seeking Jesus with all thier might they will find him. Not only will they find him but they will also uncover the Lords purpose in thier life. The bible is an amazing book as it reveals to us the Characterof God and his purposes for our lives. It is also an intimate way to get to know him if we read it with prayer. Hearing God, seeing visions, having dreams, seeing God in all the circumstances and experiences we see etc is a good way to get to know him too if it all lines up with principles and standards set out in scripture.

I'm a 3rd Generational Pentacostal. My Grandparents were saved in a tent revival in the 1940's. I'm thankful for my foundation and my heritage. I've worked in ministry for most of my adult life and spent years in Africa as an overseas missionary. I'm going to use an "American Colliquialism" for my next statement ------ "don't throw the baby out with the bath water". Are there some believers in the Pentecostal and Charismatic faith who walk on the "fringe"? Yes. Do some leaders "cross the Biblical lines"? Yes. Is God keeping a perfect and accurate record of their behaviors and their actions? Yes. God does call and anoint people like you and Melissa who prayerfully and boldly "call out" those who are apostate? Yes. I realize that your ministry is not easy and it comes with some "heaviness". That being said, I do hope that you spend some time in the future focusing on men and women of God in the "Pentecostal and Charismatic" faith who are living their lives according to Scripture and trying to honor and glorify God. Godly and humble people in the "Pentecostal and Charismatic" faith are out there but they're the ones who never get any recognition. They're the ones who don't strive to be in the spotlight. They love Jesus and they're taking up their cross EVERY SINGLE DAY and following Him. They may not have a public ministry on YT but they are among God's remnant and they are WORLDWIDE. I appreciate all of the "Apologists" that I sub to on YT. One day soon, I'd like to see a "change and a pivot" where the people of God focus more on those who are fulfilling God's purposes than those who are "apostate". God bless you...

What’s scary is when reading the Bible is promoted but the leaders have ways to twist scripture and manipulate you when asking questions.

I was in the charismatic scene for ca a year or so? I was still pretty new to the faith and in my baby stage of being a christian. But day after day i felt more suspicious about it all. It was more about feeling, emotions and experiences. Worship was all about crying and breaking down and ONLY focusing on love and acceptance but not the wrath and justice of God WHICH ARE IMPORTANT. It was more like i like to call it "flower power christianity". I am so glad God woke me up and i was able to step one step after the other back out if this scene.

I agree with what you ladies are saying... I remember going to a Charismatic Church bordering Hyper in my very young years. The message was more leaning towards "demonstrating gifts of the Spirit = better communion with God". Experiencing the Holy Spirit via speaking in tongues or prophesy was the focus during worship and prayer, and if you did not experience Him like this, there was sin. It formed a type of legalism in the church. I was hesitant to call other more conservative Christians my brothers or sisters in Christ because they didn't see the Holy Spirit in this manner. I say bordering Hyper because they didn't go into "there has to be miracles at each service" or the sort. Actually, I think a better explanation of their doctrine was that although they believed and taught the Holy Spirit is God, alongside the Father and Son, but they treated Him like an experience. In God's mercy though, the legalism was too much for my parents and we left. As I grew older, and coming back to the Lord after a long time away, I realized what the scripture says about the work of Holy Spirit in our lives, that my more conservative Christians are indeed my brother's and sisters in Christ, and my experience with the Lord is not always in prophecy, dreams or a feeling. I do believe the gifts of the Holy Spirit continue today, that the Lord can still speak to you , but in a very different manner. God's will is known to me via His Word vs. a prophecy, and if I do receive one, I take it back to scripture and ask the Lord for wisdom as the Bible tells me to do. They meant well in that church though, in the sense that their goal was the Holiness of God and not just signs and wonder (it was quite a humble church actually, so these signs and wonders weren't exploited for profit), but how they defined how that Holiness was demonstrated was a little misguided. God spoke to Moses through a burning bush, but he met Paul on the road to Damascus. Two different encounters both of which are in the Bible where God spoke directly. So why are we surprised when someone says that they got a word from God? The apostolic age is still here and spiritual gifts did not cease.

I am Charismatic myself, but I was taught to weigh every spiritual gift on the authority of scripture and if what is being said or revealed doesn't line up, it isn't from God.

Well said! Way to pinpoint the type of thinking and the words used in what they believe. Scripture needs to be the filter by which we pour all truth-claims through. It is the glasses by which we view all of life. It's sad that scripture has to "compete" with people's experiences.

Right on! from one who who counts himself as a pentecostal Christian. The Word of God is our Authority. It is closed Revelation. I believe on a personal word from God yet it's always to agree with the Bible.

We need to come to Jesus by faith but , through the Holy Spirit, experience God's healing, love, liberty. We don't chase these things but we taste and see He is good.

Hey. I came here to get a better understanding of your guys views on the difference between Charismatic and Hyper-Charismatic. Usually I come away from your videos with a deeper understanding. But this one I either missed it or didn't feel it was distinct enougn as to what in your view is the difference. Other than, both believe in the gifts of the Spirit. But one seems to be after a supernatural experience? Am I summarizing correctly or...how would you adjust that?

I would love to debate you on this topic. My argument is God foretold that prophesy would continue. Also, one living in temple times heard prophecy then what motivation would they have to study Torah or heard it in the public reading? That argument just doesn’t work. Also Saul and other spoke in tongues, seen vision and so did others in the churches and they studied the Bible.

Yes - agreed This has been a bone of contention for Jesus followers from the beginning. But, orthodox believers have a very dubious bridge to stand on here. By Paul’s own testimony, he bases his apostolic authority (or even his own self designation as an apostle) and theology on mystical visions of a man that he never personally met. Being critical of modern charlatans is good but needs put in historical perspective

To discount mysticism (you left out communion with the Divine as an aspect of that) is to discount the individuals who literally wrote the Bible. Something to think about. Why limit your own experience of God so much. Yes our ego can get involved and misuse this power. Same with the Bible.

God is above understanding. He is above his attributes, the bible, and all human perceptions. Apaphatic theology has been a way to achieve union with God throughout church history. This is true in both the east and west. Scholastic teaching is important, but the mystic understanding that by unknowing and detachment, you are able to separate the ego from the soul. The ultimate goal is to die to the persona and replace it with the will of God. This is not new age. It's the way of the true contemplative.

I have had a question go through my mind lately for the studious ones among us. How much knowledge does it take for the “new birth” to happen? How much knowledge did those who Jesus healed, rose from the dead have before their faith was correct faith? My point? We see in scripture God working in the lives of ignorant people (or in Paul’s case violently opposed) to shine the light of truth into their lives and change them.

I remember reading some where that something was deceitful above all things....what was it now....oh yeah. THE HEART! Too much emotion and experientialmotivation and too little scripture will get you in trouble. Just look through out the word...Adam and eve, Samson, David, Saul, etc. Too much emotion and not enough prayer and scripture leads to a dark path. I of course am speaking from experience too.

Doctrine is critical to remaining safe and undeceived, and each and every follower of Christ should spend enough time with Jesus to be taught doctrine DIRECTLY by the Holy Spirit - the Spirit of TRUTH. 1 John 2:27, John 14:26, John 16:13-15 - THIS should be your lived experience with Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit puts together correct doctrine, and keeps us safe with truth. If you want spiritual experiences, satan is happy to give them to anyone who decides to be part of "an evil and adulterous generation" that seeks after signs and wonders. Why adulterous? Because going anywhere other than our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, is spiritual adultery. The Bible - the Word of God - is part of our armour, and necessary for offensive attack on the kingdom of darkness as well. But we can't very well deal with the darkness around us if we don't deal with the darkness IN us first, now can we? The advice that I both give and follow is this: ask the Lord to surface any areas of sin in you that have the potential to destroy you. Ask Jesus to make those areas LOUD and CLEAR. Once you know the problem, FAST and PRAY for a breakthrough in that area, while using your willpower to try to deny the sin access to your choices. Continue this until you get your breakthrough, since you do NOT want to be destroyed by your own choices. This is one of the few avenues that our enemy has to ruin our lives and destroy us. He can't get past God's power of protection, so he has to get us to open the gates for him. THIS is why you seek the Lord for what your biggest sin issue(s) is/are, and seek His face for a breakthrough against it. The days are coming where you will wish you have done this if you don't.

One must ask if these charismatic "manifestations" or operations are truly of God if they have no value in resisting the indulgence of the flesh.

What happens when there is no scriptural reference? There are many modern social problems not addressed by the Bible.

Would telling an unbeliever that you were delivered from demons with a body of believers praying over and you were vomiting bc these demons are leaving you be consider mysticism????

Appreciate this. Again we have to read and understand scripture to know what is biblically correct per God. There is no liquid gold in the Bible or Knowing. This is dangerous territory to enter and opening doors where you shouldn’t go.

I know a few people who claim to be born again charismatic believers. They always seem to think they have some hidden message for me from God, that they are more "tuned in" because they speak in tonques and have the gift of prophesy. However, every one of them suffers from varying forms of depression and cant get out of bed for days at a time. Im wondering if this is common among charismatics?

Reading the books of the New Testament, we probably asked ourselves more than once: *"Why 2000 years we do not see those miracles that accompanied the Сhurch of Christ in the I century, as described in the New Testament?"* Why do the so-called preachers of Christ have to prove that Jesus really existed and atheists boldly deny the historicity or divine origin of Christ? Maybe because the Сhurch of Christ has not existed for 2000 years? The Сhurch does not exist in the form in which it is presented in the books of the New Testament, but there are Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and other christian sects claiming to be the place of the Church, but they not have the only thing that distinguishes the divine from the human and is characteristic of just the Сhurch of Christ -the reinforcement of the word with signs, that is, miracles (Mark 16:15-20). There are unbiblical experiences that people are going after, and these fit a typical definition of mysticism. But there are biblical experiences of God, which so many so-called discernment people are also defining as mysticism. Since unbiblical experiences are the standard definition of mysticism, in our gospel-believing, Bible believing Christianity, anyway, we should not bunch biblical experiences of God in the same group with unbiblical experiences which purport to be of God, but are really another spirit. That ought to be obvious, but unfortunately, many supposed discernment teachers are teaching that experiences of God the Bibleb teaches us to believe in and anticipate, are not real, denying the words of Jesus, in the very face of him speaking these things so many times. So, sadly, discernment is everyone's job, not just the work of supposed discernment ministries.

Did Jesus commission the Gospels? Did he mention Gospels?

Theology should help us interpret out experiences. Our experience should compliment our theology and give it life. The bible is full of encounters. Christianity is a relationship with the "Living God".

Yes, God's language to us is the Bible. If we don't understand Him it's because we don't speak His language

Is slain in the spirit in the bible? My church had started doing this and I have no idea whats going on. I can't find it biblically. I also am starting to feel like I'm not doing something right or not good enough because I dont have these experiences. On the other hand I know this isn't right. I just need biblically proof. I didn't listen to the whole video. I stopped when it was talking about hearing God directly. Folks if you are not hearing God directly you are deaf and blind because His sheep HEAR His voice and they know Him. God is not inconsistent with the scriptures or with the manifestation we have of Him in Jesus Christ but if you think that God is not bigger than the scriptures you don't really know Him very well. I find it fascinating that various people and groups of people raise scripture to a higher level than God Himself but the funny thing is that if you ask for an exposition of a certain scripture or scriptures from 10 bible believing theologians you may very well get 10 different answers of what the bible "Clearly says". So who has the correct interpretation? I am comforted that the Father, Son and Spirit commune with me, teach and lead me and protect me.

This is exactly why i stopped going to charismatic churches and started going to Anglican and Episcopalian churches. Charismatic churches are full people claiming to have revelations about you - people are all trying to be your spiritual guides - it's a form of ego trip for them. Worse still they hold it against you and attack you saying you have disobeyed God Himself when you dont do like they want you too. Also, Charismatic churches are all focused on some superstar preacher rather than Christ and their worship are like concerts with superstar performers - the focus is on them even if they insist they are singing for Jesus. I prefer the traditional Anglican style with choir and hymns.

Charismatics and Hyper-Charismatics...why don't you ladies have an open dialogue with some of these people? That would really be an interesting program. Having an open and honest discussion about their beliefs would certainly show that you are earnestly desiring to help bring them out of their doctrinal errors. After all, don't we want everyone to have a clear understanding of biblical truth? Please consider what I have said. I know you care about these people and desire the best for them, right?
