Episode [288]: Artist Aliza Nisenbaum began both her friendship with Veronica Ramírez and her observational portrait painting practice at artist Tania Bruguera’s Immigrant Movement International (IMI) in 2012. Over ten years later, the seeds of friendship, empowerment, and solidarity planted at IMI continue to bloom through their relationship and continued engagement with the community of Corona, Queens through art. Culminating with the opening of Nisenbaum’s Queens Museum exhibition “Queens, Lindo y Querido,” this film follows the development of Nisenbaum’s observational portraiture and highlights the power of a socially engaged art practice to make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities.
Aliza Nisenbaum was born in 1977 in Mexico City, Mexico, and lives and works in Queens, New York. Learn more about the artist at: art21.org/alizanisenbaum/

I love these paintings. They are so full of life. They are a celebration of humanity, and echo the Artist's bright soul. Her sense of community and the warmth she gives and gets back is saintly!

Hate how this is being dismissed as sentimental, when it manages to uplift communities and gives a voice to the voiceless. Contemporary figuration doesn't have to all be debauchery, littered with hypersexualised bodies in murky spaces, it can also be a meaningful & enriching interaction between artist and sitter. Congratulations to Nisenbaum on her paintings and impressive use of colour.

The “voiceless” have a fuckin voice, this video just keeps the white savior narrative, move the fuk aside and actually share Black and Indigenous artists. White people fuckin lifting themselves on the backs of Black and Brown folk

Very moving and beautiful. To me, this is what I love about art and how artists can make a difference. It doesn't have to be portraits but something to give back, uplift and empower the community you live in is really what an artists role is. Thank you PBS for this very lovely episode of Art21. I think this is one of your best.

The art collective sounds cool, a place learn and express for immigrants and people who want to reach out to people. Just hearing a another language is wonderful in modern day America.
