Went to see them (with Al Jardine and Brian Wilson) in Montreal a little more than a year ago. A birthday gift from my wife. I very much like them but I would'nt call myself a diehard fan. At the end of the show they were shaking hand with people down the stage, took my chance and went to shook hand with Al Jardine and next thing I knew I was in my wife's arm crying like a 60 years old little boy who just realize that their music have been part of my life for more than 50 years.

Whenever I listen to Sloop John B, I have these visions in my mind of a sailboat anchored in aqua clear water under bright sunshine...and picturing Dennis Wilson leaning up against the mast with a grin on his face, surrounded by Brian, Carl, Al, and Mike Love...one of my all-time favorite songs by an original American band, The Beach Boys.

I agree that Al is underrated, but IMO only with regards to the larger music-listening public, including many BB fans. But within the BB, I think Al's role was commensurate with his talent, and how often he was featured speaks of the group's high regard for him. He sang many BB songs, including one of their 4 number one hits, "Help Me Rhonda." In all, I think Al played a significant role, and isn't it incredible that he lived through the crazy '60s, a member of one of the most successful bands in the history of R&R, and he lived an amazingly successful life free of drugs, horror stories, and even free of all drama/lawsuits that afflicted Mike and Brian. Al did the whole RockNRoll lifestyle about as cleanly and respectfully as a man can do it. Congrats!

Before seeing the videos I didn't realize Al sang lead on as many songs as he did. I suppose it was hard not to be over-shadowed by the talented Wilsons and attention-grabbing Mike Love. Though low profile, he was/is very good as a lead singer, and as I've said elsewhere second only to Carl.

In the 60's I was at the beach every day in Huntington Beach. The best way to hear the bass in Beach Boy songs in those days was to tape my small 9 volt transistor radio to the mouth of a quart Mason jar. AM radio didn't do justice to music in those days. That's why record sales were so high. It was the only way to get the real sound of a song.

I was a super big fan of Beach Boys. I wasn't even much of a Beatles fan as I was so loyal to "My" Beach Boys as I called them. Never met 1 but saw them twice in concert. 2nd concert Brian no longer touring & was Bruce Terry (if my name recall is correct). It wasn't until some years later that I really started to appreciate how great Al Jardine & what he contributed.

The roots of this song go back to the 1600's. Poet Carl Sandberg saved it for posterity as a poem in his 1927 collection called "The American Songbag". Later as Al said, the Kingston Trio and then the BB brought it back to life.

A long time ago, my father was doing a performance, that I didn't go to. He was a decent amateur singer, and 12 string guitar player. I'm sure he played the Kingston Trio version. I was still in high school, at that time. I had the family van, and was taking 3 girls to another concert. A local band, called Papa doo run run. They did/do Beach Boys music. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papa_Doo_Run_Run Anyway, I always thought that both concerts had the same song. Dad doing the KTrio version, and Papa dooing the BB version. Oh, that concert, I SAW a Leslie Speaker in action for the first time. steve
