Saudi Women: Reform or Repression? | Al Jazeera World

Just how free are women in Saudi Arabia today? The Saudi government has said it supports the empowerment of women and young people. While there have been reforms, including lifting the ban on women driving in June 2018, the arrest and detention of women speaking out against the government appear to have continued.
Al Jazeera World looks at the individual cases of five Saudi women currently in detention, or who have fled the country following apparent harassment for their political views. It asks whether Saudi Arabia is publicly championing the rights of women while privately punishing those who challenge the status quo.
In this film, the family of one detainee makes serious allegations of torture during her imprisonment, while others give testimonies about random arrests and arbitrary detention at Dhahban prison near Jeddah. According to Human Rights Watch, and following international pressure, the Saudi Human Rights Commission carried out an investigation into conditions at Dhahban and found no evidence of torture.
This film examines the consequences of activism in Saudi Arabia, hearing from women detainees and international human rights organisations, as well as seeking responses from those at the heart of decision-making within the country.

I like what the female activist said when she said Loujain wasn't political, she just wanted to drive. Foreign media might have hyped it up but from old video interviews with Loujain, I never saw her talk disparagingly about the Saudi royal family or regime. She just wanted to drive. I hope they get released soon.

you are probably right, if the states would sanction SA it would get their attention, but if it would be the right kind of attention is the question. this problem is not with the people, culture, royal family or even the food.. it's the legal system that need to change. the royal family has the power to do that, but so far the will have been absent. freedom of expression is essential in any country, especially in a monarchy where the king should have the people's respect, not their fear. the guardianship system is at least 200 years past its expiration date, it needs to go, just like capital punishment.

In some places, yes. Many middle Eastern women dress lavishly underneath the religious garb or at women-only events and this includes makeup for many. In some areas though wearing makeup is seen as whoring yourself or violating faith so might be seriously punished and is best avoided. In Afghanistan under the Taliban women caught wearing makeup were likely to have it scraped off with razor blades. Saudi women in the 90s were prone to bring sprayed in the face with acid if they had any. Under burqas and niqab many wear it.

Only God can help Saudi Arabia, the current rules are changing the original law that the founder Ibn Saudi put in place for their own good. The character of the Saudi Arabia people will change drastically reduced to places like America and Europe. This is the place that suppose to be an example for Islamic nation.

You can blame AJ for the story being biased - but to be effective, you have to debunk their claims. These are well known human rights issues. Can’t claim bias ... when it’s factual reporting.

I don't think 🤔 it's personal.... Most likely all 22 Arab Countries have similar man made laws pertaining to the rights of women that were written by men only.... The problem is that they never asked or invited women to help write ✍🏿 the laws..... Trust me, if they did we wouldn't be having so much of a problem with this issue....Facts...

Your report has no credibility. I am an expatriate, I find women have more respect and freedom in Saudi 🇸🇦 than many third world countries. Your interpretation of freedom means to criticize government just to be popular then, this may not be allowed.

Freedom has only one meaning - Freedom of speech, expression, and religion. Saudi is not a third world country. Topic is here is women rights, i.e right over their own body.

Respect and freedom?? Coming from a "male" that has no idea what it's like to be a woman living in a suppressed country. Its obviously you're just like your government. Horrible country for woman

Wow look everybody Al Jazeera has a video about the humans rights and freedoms in the middle east which they love selectively talking about in other parts of the world, in this case Saudi Arabia. Let's see how many more videos they make regarding lock of human rights and oppression in the middle east, especially Arab countries. Also the civil wars in Syria and Yemen are still going on despite no coverage of it so how about Al Jazeera make video on the humanitarian catastrophe Saudi Arabia and other Arabs countries have created in Yemen.

Freedom have the price, life in so called free country is not as rosy as people think. Yes, you have freedom to dress as you wanted, to engage and befriend whoever you wanted, but are we truly free? Do marriage last? Do we have any family values left on us? Can we even dream to live like Saudi, UAE, Bahrain or Qatar citizens? No. Every institution is corrupted to the core and only money is everything.

I am an American woman. No arab blood in me, and I’m not Muslim. I had the pleasure of living in Saudi Arabia, jeddah from 2008-2019. My time in saudi was nothing less than amazing. The country welcomed me with open arms… saudi has been so welcoming and treated me extremely good. With all that being said, again, I’m an ALL AMERICAN WOMAN. I am a conservative. I was able to leave my compound with a simple abaya on. I NEVER covered my hair or forced to. I’m the compound we had 5 swimming pools, where we were able to wear bikinis! We could walk the compound streets in shorts and tank tops. We were only asked to respect the law when we left the compound. Their law is the Islamic law. With all that being said… I would NEVER get on social media and bash the royal families… or tweet about women’s rights. I cannot fathom a woman getting on social media and bashing the country. If you don’t like the laws saudi has set forth, then simply leave and keep your mouth shut. Seems pretty simple to me!

Just because you happened to temporarily live in compound designated for foreign workers doesn't make you an expert on the issue.' 'Simply leave & keep your mouth shut"!?.... You Clearly have no Clue what it's like to walk in the shoes of these women. I suggest that you fully educate yourself before making such ignorant & disrespectful statements.

216 Land many young females aren’t wearing any coverings on their face or hair lately and dressed normally. Also they do drive on their own but those who want to follow the religion or have a very strict family or a traditional husband still follow these rules. But it’s more relaxed these days so it just depends if she is religious and wants to go to heaven. But these rules have been getting more relaxed because mbs wants them to be modern too and also attract tourists.
