Western historian decided in should be called the Byzantine Empire. There are two very good books about the Roman Empire after rome's fell into the "dark ages"; I wonder who brought on the darkness to the church in the west, the evil one himself, to lead the west into what it has become today. The books are: The History of the Byzantine Empire vol one & two by an Orthodox historian Vasiliev.

But the issue here is not how Orthodox Christians called themselves, or how they were perceived by their Ottoman lords. The issue here is to avoid creating confusion in the minds of English speaking audience who otherwise are clueless on the subtle differences between historic designations and would instantly associate the name "Roman Orthodox" to the "Roman Catholics" which would a pretty big mistake.
