We have the exact same sentiment for Funny Story by Emily Henry. Sooo glad it wasn’t just me that felt a bit conflicted.

I read Parable of the Sower in February for Black Author's Month, and even though I normally dislike dystopian novels, I LOVED this one. My jaw dropped when I realized it opened in 2024, and it was almost scary how close some of what happens in the book parallels today, even if only symbolically. I read Honey & Spice in the same month and also loved it; not a romance girlie because I'm Ace and don't do spice, but this one was so good. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Parable of the Sower (and the second book) CHANGED my LIFE, one of my favorite books of all time. The characters felt like real people to me and i love the journal entry style writing. Made me think so much about the ways things are in society, how they could’ve been, how they might be in the future. I wish I caught the book discussion ! But so grateful for Octavia Butler. I haven’t read Kindred yet so i will definitely be getting to that soon

Interesting! I actually disagree about Funny Story being like Happy Place. I actually think Funny Place is more like Book Lovers in that it's MUCH lighter in tone and the conflict in the book isn't really between the couple, but primarily between the main characters and their families. I prefer the more emotional, slow burn angst and interpersonal conflict in Happy Place/Beach Read/People We Meet On Vacation. I was pretty bored by Funny Story for the same reason I was a little bored by Book Lovers...less conflict, more fluff.

ooo that's such an interesting point! I think the fluff in Book Lovers worked for me somehow but for some reason the fluff in Funny Story didn't

i've read severance and started parable in 2020 but couldn't get through it at the time (was hitting a little too close to home). as you were talking about the two and the things you liked/didn't like about both it reminded me of a dystopian/thriller i recently read and loved - moon of the crusted snow by waubgeshig rice. it's definitely a survival story but it's following an indigenous community in canada so i feel like it approaches the story from a different angle than other survival stories i've read. one of my favorite reads of the year so far, would definitely recommend it!

You captured my thoughts on Funny Story perfectly: compelling at moments but overall meh. I’ve only read Book Lovers otherwise but really want to try out beach read and people we meet on vacation, so I’m hoping those two work better for me
