New Ukulele Tutorials ever Wednesday and Saturday
Today we are going to learn how to play the C Major Scale and all 5 shapes. Step one of the tutorial is to go through each shape with the tabs on the screen and we will walk through each shape, with a low G string. Even if you don't have a low G string and you are playing with a high G reentrant tuning you should still take the time to learn the notes on the high G to help you master the entire fretboard.
The next thing we are going to do after you have learned the notes is to play the scale and call out the intervals. By playing through this and saying the intervals out loud you will internalize the intervals, which will help you with transposition, composition, improvising solos, communication with other musicians, and the most important thing in all of music, tension and resolution. Learning the intervals may feel hard if you are just struggling with learning the scale, so focus on the scale first. Once you feel like you can confidently play all 5 shapes then you can start to expand and learn the intervals, but makes sure that you take the time to master all 5 shapes first.
Lastly, we are going to briefly talk about something called "transposition" and how you can use the root note of the scale to transpose the scales, or change the key, of the music that you are playing. Why would you ever want to do that? Maybe a song has a lot of barre chords and you want to change it to an easier key, or maybe the song is really hard for you sing so you can use transposition to change a song into a key that you can sing. Sometimes the original key is just too high or just to low.
