When most people think of tomatoes, they think of indeterminate tomatoes, which are vine-type tomatoes that produce all season long and grow until killed by frost, pests, or diseases. There are two other lesser-known types of tomatoes:
1. Determinate Tomatoes: These tomatoes are bush-type, produce all of their tomatoes in a short time-frame, and then die back.
2. Dwarf tomatoes are an emerging market in tomato gardening. There is a grass-roots breeding program called the Dwarf Tomato Project creating a lot of new varieties on the market today. They are predominantly older dwarf-type tomatoes crossed with heirloom and open-pollinated indeterminate and determinate types. These crosses produce a "tree-type" or "bush-type" tomato plant that grow to a shorter size, but produce full-sized, full-flavored fruit that rival the finest indeterminate tomatoes.
The benefit of determinate and dwarf tomatoes are they are much easier to maintain, take up less space and are much easier to grow than typical indeterminate tomatoes.
