Hi there, I would like to add as well a segment about illegal offroad driving here in Iceland. There has been a constant problem revolving trucks or motorcycles going off the trail or road to avoid a minor obstacle in the road (large puddle, snow or alike). This leaves tiremarks that will take a long time to heal especially if made in moss or other vegetation. If there is an obstacle on the road and you cant go through it, then you brought the wrong car and need to turn back. If tiremarks are left in moss then it can take decades to heal. Also when other drivers see an obstacle and see tracks leading around it, then that makes the marks deeper and gradually you will have an open wound where once was moss or grass. Also when tiremarks are made in soft soil then they create a path for excess water to flow along that path. That water can act as a knife for the soft soil and if that happens, the mark will always be there if left unattended. As you know we have very short summers here and the fragile vegetation just doesn't heal properly in such a short time. The only acceptable time to go offroad is during winter and on frozen snow-covered ground. Travelling in the winter in the highlands adds also a whole other element to your trip. But I recommend using a local experienced guide for that and proper vehicles.

I'm glad I found this video and have been researching this more. My wife and I will be in Iceland October 9th - 20th and we are renting a 4x4. Starting in Akureyri, then driving to Geysir for a couple of nights had me concerned about the F roads. I'm thinking I will loop around from the 1 and go through the south side into Geysir.

Love these videos (and Jeannies smile ofcourse), and dreaming of Iceland since I was a little Dutch boy.(didn't have to hold my finger in the dyk, so had time to read, what triggered me was Desmond Bagley's Running Blind) Anyway... I have got the weirdest plan for next summer: to drive the ring raod and all the site in 2 weeks (I know, that's not weird) but I want to do it in a stock 2003 Mazda MX5 (Miata).... camping and hytting... but not the inland roads... Does that make me a moron or did I just mention a brilliant plan???

Hello, I like your videos a lot, very instructive. Thanks. I'll be visiting Iceland soon and will carefulls take some "safe" F roads. I would like, however to visit Axlafoss. Is this feasible with a Hyundai Tucson 4WD, but not like a Toyota Land Cruiser! Can you advise ? It's ll be in End of June. Regards, k

We had a motorhome thinking if we liked a spot we could stay there. That didn't happen, the staying part, and wouldn't rent such a large vehicle again. Anyway, we went the whole Route 1 and turned off to 95 just out of Breiddalsvik. What a terrifying road with a killer switchback halfway up. Thought we'd roll off into the valley. Google map/voice told us too. Yup I'll blame google. It was spectacular and it's an adventure we tell all the time. In addition to my losing my passport in Vik. ...................

Hi, thank you very much, we like your videos and very informative. We are four people planning for a 14 days trip, so wanted to know if we can go camper for F roads ? Or which type of vehicle we should use ?
@IcelandwithaView
@IcelandwithaView Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks so much for watching! Regular campervans are not allowed on F Roads. You'll also have to get a 4x4 campervan. I also suggest contacting your rental company to determine which F Roads are appropriate - figure out where you want to go first. A TRUE 4x4 (ie - Land Rover and Jeep) is the best way to travel ALL around Iceland but it can be pricey. Oh, and it depends on what time of year you're going... if you'll be in Iceland anytime between September - April, you won't be able to access most F-roads regardless of what vehicle you have since they're closed/unserviced.

what about F roads in areas other than the highlands? are there any F roads in the east, north or west of the island that lead to any interesting areas that might be worth visiting?

I know you said thorsmork required special 4x4. What about landmannalaugar? Would a 4x4 camper van be appropriate to get there?
@IcelandwithaView
@IcelandwithaView 9 ай бұрын
Yes, it's recommended to take a 4wd into the Highlands as 2wd vehicles are not permitted on F-Roads.

just stay on the road itself and dont deviate from it to avoid an obstacle. The soil here just cant handle too much. Could leave a gash for decades in the moss.
