Maybe you already covered this, I just returned from 8 days in Iceland and this being my 2nd trip there, I THINK I finally kinda understand the one lane tunnels North of Akureyri. But maybe make a video about how that is supposed to work? Thanks so much!

6 more months until we're there. Thanks for your videos, they're helpful. I've seen gates, where drivers get out and open the gates and drive through. How easy is it to tell between a gates which is OK to pass through and one which means the road is closed?

Driving in Iceland isn’t very different from America but the random road signs that are EVERYWHERE confused me SO much. (especially that one yellow sign with a red circle in the middle).

You should explain when your driving 90 k and the sign goes 50 k with some lines like corners and the road straightens out again and there’s no sign saying it’s 90 or staying 50.

What I was thinking about: What is the difference between the Attractions signs with Black and Red Lettering? I thought, that maybe the Black written Attractions are always reachable, meanwhile the Red written Attractions only at certain times?

also, watch out for the speed cameras. Most have a sign about 100 meters or so before the camera. Don't speed!

You missed the only sign that confused me--the yield sign! I never saw a stop sign, only the yellow yield sign with a red border, even at 90 degree intersections. Does this mean that you don't have to stop at all unless there's traffic? I saw the yield sign with white diamonds painted on roadway and never know what that meant. Stop behind the line? Go if it's clear? Very confusing.

You mean the triangle signs with red border and a yellow and empty center? They function as right of way indicators. If they face you it means you must stop and yield to traffic until it is safe enough to continue, though you aren't required to stop at them if there is no traffic (unlike at stop signs). The white diamonds on the pavement does the same thing and they do mark where you should stop if there is a passing vehicle.

Will a debit card work in Iceland since it has a pin, or does it have to be a credit card with a pin?

Jeannie, your advice for Iceland helps me a lot. I just came home from Iceland and your video on what to prepare for visiting Iceland in the summer. It helped me 100%. Thank you. Iceland is a very interesting place. To me, It was a very educational trip. I learned from our tour guide about many things that no one talk ( know ) about them. How do you think about 🧝‍♀️ elf, invisible people. In the old days, there were many women put their new born infants in the wilderness let them died due to It’s a very difficult environment in Iceland to bring up a child . Also on the roads, if there are rocks blocking the road, don’t remove them, the drivers needs to go find other Way to go on. The rocks or a big rock put on the roads could be done by Elf, per our tour guide ‘ if anyone removes those rocks, they for sure will have bad luck On the road. The car could have problems, or car accidents, or some one in the car can get very sick. It is true. ‘ she said . Our tour guide knows few friends can actually see and talk to elf Daily. Do u believe in elf?

No we don't believe in elfs, it is a funny myth that we tell tourists ;) There are though roads that go around an "elf hill" (like Álfhólsvegur (Elf-hill-road) in Kópavogur - yes it is the name of the street NO KIDDING! - it even has "Elf hill school"), you can easily see how the road goes around the "elf rock" here (similar to Google Maps): ja.is/kort/?d=hashid%3A79JRY&x=360170&y=404105&z=8&type=map&ja360=1&jh=253.8 It has a fun story but it is also practical since it is used to slow down the speed on the road ;)

1 lane bridges are not too bad, but the 1 lane tunnels are a little scary

Do you have pointers for the one lane tunnels?

1 lane tunnels have "dugouts". If you see them only your right-hand side, you are to pull into them and yield to oncoming traffic. If you see them on your left, then you have the right of way. There should always be a sign posted outside the tunnel which indicates who has the right of way. Some tunnels have dugouts for both directions and then it's up to the driver to judge. They are usually well marked with a blue/white "M".

Unless it has changed, 20 to rent I believe! You may need to contact the individual company to find out their policy. :)

Hulda Guðjónsdóttir there are signs for most of the same information but they look different. Some signs (one lane bridge, blind hill) aren’t common in parts of the US. Also, I can’t think of any equivalent to the “attraction” sign she mentioned.

I was kinda baffled the whole time how my rental car knew the speed limit of the road I was on o_____O Like once I passed say a sign that said 90, the little sign on my dashboard changed to 90. I'm like, is it GPS? But then I'd pass construction signs, clearly temporary, what looks like an all-silver censor sign, and it would change also. I just...I was paranoid Hertz would know I was going >90kph and they'd charge me a fine or something XD

Some new cars have cameras that can read the speed signs and will therefore display it on your dashboard. It has nothing to do with GPS ;) It is a feature that was introduced by Mercedes-Benz (like so many safety features have been) & BMW some years ago (or a decade) and is being adapted by many manufacturers.

A car rental company can not fine you. They are not working for the authorities in that capacity(right word?). So if they try to fine you, tell them you want a police officer fining you. If they would be so stupid to call the cops and the cops asks if you "admit" to the speed crime. Say no, you do not. But this will and would never happen so no worries.

I've been back from Iceland for almost 3 weeks now and nothing has come to fruition about it. The only other charge I was charged from Hertz after I got back to the US was for like 34$. Whatever it was for (small damages?) I guess it's over with now lol. Thanks for your insight though :)

In regards of the "road sign reader" then currently the systems that have been introduced can only read European road signs. I am sure they are working on American version as well (USA, Canada, Mexico etc.) but don't know why it hasn't been introduced there as well. European manufacturers have been in forefront of passanger safety and that is perhaps the reason why you tend to see new security features appear in cars like Mercedes-Benz & Volvo that will be introduced as standard by the authorities later on.

Do not go over the speed limit in Iceland if you wish to live. It´s not about the "Speeding tickets". Again and again and again Icelandic people read in newspapers(online) "Tourists died in a car accident". So many people, no... So many tourists die in Iceland because they drive to fast. "Gravel Road" plus 120km(75miles) driving on a rented vehicle. You do not know how to react, you barely know the vehicle, because "human" brains are stupid. You hit the breaks when you lose control when you are suppose to try to regain control. Just another couple dead in Iceland in the Icelandic news. Tourists die so often in car crashes in Iceland that we don´t even care anymore. However we do curse the "stupid dead" when they take Icelandic lives with them. :T So, don´t fear the police or tickets. Fear for your lives... Icelandic roads will kill you if you do not respect them! >D
