Here’s a recipe for great wicking soil (I use 5gallon buckets as measuring cups lol)
• 2 five-gallon buckets of Peat Moss
• 1 five-gallon bucket of cow manure or compost or worm castings
• 1 ½ cup of garden lime
• ¼ bucket (of a 5gallon bucket) of Perlite
• Handful of Epsom salt
• Sometimes I ad in blood meal or other things I may have around to raise the calcium or potassium levels a bit.
• Anything around that mix should work for you.
The idea is to have enough peat moss to absorb / wick the water up from the bottom so at least 60 - 75% Peat should do it plus whatever else you need for your specific veggies.

I have questions: how did you build your grobag garden? It looks like a wooden frame covered in a tarp- is the bottom lined? With what? How do you water it? How is it working for you?

It's lined in 6 mil plastic so it doesn't leak. It has about 1.5 inches of water that I filled daily with a hose. It worked great. Watch this video to see how it worked for me: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ed14krWD37ipZmg.html

Are you still using the kiddy pools to put growbags into, or have you converted everything to this growbag garden. The automation of the kiddy pools was a great idea

Just using grow bags now. I've haven't been gardening as much lately.

Question. please reply if possible...arent you concerned with root rot when placing grow bags sitting in water? Your method is so easy and appealing, but I keep seeing videos of wicking systems, or of taking up most of the bottom of the bag with empty bottles so only a small percentage of the soil is in constant contact w the water. Is your system better? And how high up the grow bag do you allow the water to sit? Thanks so much!

No root rot if you make the soil mix properly. The soil takes in just what it needs and no more. :-)

Uncle have you tested the ph of your soil after having the plants in this system for a while? I have a huge problem with the soil in my growbags becoming very acidic if kept damp. After a lot of research it looks like it's because the nutrients in the soil decompose faster when kept moist. Do you also face this problem sometimes?

Not really. In fact I re-use the soil each year. Possibly you're soil mixture is retaining too much liquid.
