My problem with grow bags is I get moss growing on the sides of them and I dont know the right way to clean them
@whyamigreen5 күн бұрын
That may be because they are too wet. The soil mixture soaks up too much water or they may be too much in the shade. You can just leave the moss on as it won't hurt anything and clean the bag at the end of season if you decide to use them another year.

One year I was too late in the season to buy Kiddie Pools so I made a long rectangle frame out of 2x4 lumber that I laid flat on my deck and lined it with 6mil plastic. This worked the same way as a kiddie pool but much less expensive. Just make sure it is completely level so the water doesn't overflow over the sides and drill an overflow hole at your inch 1 1/2" mark so you don't over water the grow bags. Good luck.

Thanks for your video. I like your no nonsense approach. I checked your video list and did not see one where you discuss grow bag sizes for different types of veggies. So many sites say you need a ten gallon grow bag for almost all plants, but that gets very expensive fast. Do you really need to do the huge bags? Would appreciate your insights. Thanks!

I appreciate that! I have never used a 10 gallon bag, I always use 5 gal and 3 gal bags. With the concept of air pruning for grow bags you can grow virtually any veggies in small bags. I'll try to do a video on the process to help understand shortly. Have a great day...

This is not a new idea, but it’s a good one. Variations of self-watering grow systems like this have been in use for several years. You can paint the outside of the plastic buckets to give better protection from the sun and extend their life. Regardless of what kind of gardening method you use, there will always be maintenance, upkeep and, at times, structural replacement, in addition to amending the soil and soil replacement. It’s just part of gardening. A lot of vegetable gardeners are container gardeners. They do not let the fact that their containers have to be replaced every 2-4 years bother them. It’s not that big a deal.

How do you get the grommets not to leak ? Is there a trick
@whyamigreenАй бұрын
Haven't had a problem. As long as the hole is the right size for the grommet, when the pressure of the hose goes through it should seal through the pressure. Be sure it's a thick enough bucket. I found that the really cheap thin buckets may sometime leak. In that case I cut a second thickness of the bucket and glue it to the first to get a double thickness. It's a pain but it works.

@whyamigreen2 ай бұрын
Here’s my recipe for great wicking soil (I use 5 gallon buckets as measuring cups lol) 2 five-gallon buckets of Peat Moss 1 five-gallon bucket of cow manure or compost or worm castings 1 ½ cup of garden lime ¼ bucket (of a 5 gallon bucket) of Perlite Handful of Epsom salt Sometimes I ad in blood meal or other things I may have around to raise the calcium or potassium levels a bit. Anything around that mix should work for you. The idea is to have enough peat moss to absorb / wick the water up from the bottom so at least 60 - 75% Peat should do it plus whatever else you need for your specific veggies.

Very cool DIY. ❤ One problem I see is the plastic of the buckets (polypro), which in my experience age-out prematurely when constantly exposed to UV radiation (read: full direct sun). They slowly turn brittle, and eventually, crumbly. The end result means that those type of pails increasingly need replacement, every 3-4yrs (read: growing seasons). Sometimes as little as 2 years. When you have 20+ pails, having to replace 4-6 of them every single year gets old in a hurry. Ive since switched to grow bags for anything 2+ gal. Also, as long as something wont need subsequent re-transplanting, 1/2 gal growbags are the smallest I go.
@whyamigreen2 ай бұрын
I put 5 gallon grow bags inside the buckets and haven't had any crumble yet. Even if they did it would be worth having the great results for such little effort. Thanks for your input for people to consider though...

@@whyamigreeneasy fix which also keeps the soil from overheating is covering the outside of the bucket with aluminum foil or you could ever wrap an old tshirt or any material around the bucket. Also I think the point of these buckets he made was to make self watering bucket system which is done with a float valve system and he did correct… the only thing I don’t understand is all the holes but I’m guessing that is for air pruning like a grow bag does! I grow Hydroponics outside and it’s pretty much the same method except you don’t put all the holes in the buckets along the sides, and you just make one up towards the middle top area which keeps it from overflowing when you get rain that comes through the top then as for the colander he used it wouldn’t go at the bottom. You would put it up at the top and then put clay pebbles in it then the plant grows through that and reaches the roots grow down to read the water. I’ve grown so many hydroponics AMAZING plants outside this way and they always stay pest and disease free ❤

Your method is so easy and appealing, but I keep seeing videos of wicking systems, or of taking up most of the bottom of the bag with empty bottles so only a small percentage of the soil is in constant contact w the water. Is your system better? And how high up the grow bag do you allow the water to sit? Thanks so much!

How do you drain standing water after a big time rain? I used grow bags last year and loved them, but they did have a drying issue. soaking them from the bottom like you do is what I want to do and that will solve everything with being too dry. I just know after a few days of rain like we get they'd be swimming with no way to drain the water out. Any suggestions?
@whyamigreen4 ай бұрын
I only allow 1 1/2" of water in the reservoir. I drill a hole in the wall of it just above my desired line to drain any excess due to rain so it never floods or overfills. Always the same amount 24 / 7. The float keeps the water to my level and drain gets rid of excess.
