I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Here is a tip: be sure to separate your males before they are 5 weeks old so that they do not begin to fight. You should have no more than 1 male for every 4 females, ideally 1 male for every 5 females. If you separate out your extra males before they are 5 weeks old, you can keep the males in the same cage together, as long as they are not near enough to see or smell any females. Enjoy your quail!

You can, however they poop a lot and it becomes difficult to keep the smell away. Also, quail have a LOT of dander, which causes everything to become VERY dusty!

The birds that have the shavings, their cage does not have a bottom. I had the cage in the grass for a couple of months until the weather got too cold for them to be on the ground (I thought it was too cold for them). That was my first cage and was listed as a tortoise habitat on Amazon. The second cage I bought after doing some research online and learning that a wire cage is easier to clean. I like the easier clean up, but I think the birds prefer the shavings so that they can take dust baths.

Your male needs to be with 4 or 5 females. He will try to mate all the time and your females will get worn out if there are not enough of them. If your male fights with your females then yes, get a different male. In the first cage I have only 1 male and 1 female because it is not mating season. I will need to add more females once it becomes mating season. Also, are you SURE you male is fighting with females? Maybe your females are males??
