Kauai, Hawaii can be broken down into 4 parts - North, East, South, West.
This is video 1 of 4 (one for each part of the island) about the North Shore.

Thank you so much. Tonight I am BINGING on a few of your videos. I lived in Haena for a year in 1988 / 89 when my son was born. We ran a B & B. It was pure perfection. I was sadly a loyal partner who went back to Cali & Puerta Vallarta (not too bad at all) due to 'him' ready to leave. Then in mid 90's lived in Kapahi and once again, my man got 'island fever' and I loyally left after only 6 months. Now I'm almost 60, solo, and praying to all the Gods I get to return. If only we invested in Haena in the 80's instead of investing in men who would actually let me down in the long run. Kauai never let me down. Maybe it's my spirit home. Much Aloha and Gratitude for your generous & informative videos. With luck and determination - I'll touch back down in beautiful North Shore.

Hello love the video! I’ve heard the beaches are rough in the winter, is this true at all north shore beaches? We are planning on traveling from January-End of April and definitely want to take advantage of the beaches but want to avoid rough seas! Another question: is parking accessible and free at the beaches? Thanks!
@YourHostJ
@YourHostJ 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks so much for watching. Yes - ocean is definitely rough more frequently in the winter months - but to be honest - winter time is my favorite part of the year on island! You can go to beaches that have reef protection and swim - just don't go too far out. You'll be fine visiting in the winter - you'll love it. We are constantly at the beach in the winter. Also - yes the parking is accessible and free! Thanks again for watching!

❤ i like your videos, and your realism, honesty, and directness, and i am happy to learn of your trajectory from Mass, to CA, to Hi and all that you have done to get there. proud of you. what i am wondering for myself is, is there any way that a relatively unambitious not hard working, not working at all, actually, 53 year old surfer could live on about 1,000 a month, who wants to spend all their time surfing, paddle boarding, and laying on the beach like a true beach bum, could make that happen. also, i have no shame and i don't care if ben stiller sees me waking up on the beach in the morning before coffee and a sesh :)also, i would be more than happy to sleep in a car in a parking space at my favorite surf break, if thats an option :)

The only problem is a local policy that requires all street and/or flood lights on roads outside the Princeville area be off at night in the North Shore area to protect some local species of birds. It's total darkness driving, walking, or bicycling on the roads at night. A couple of years ago we took a drive from Princeville to Hanalei to get Pizza and drove on a winding road in total darkness to get there. I've been stationed at military bases all over the world and it's like driving in some godforsaken back road in a third world country. As long as you stay in your residential area at night it's great, just watch traveling at night between towns in the North Shore area.
@YourHostJ
@YourHostJ 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Mark! They have added a few street lights, but I don't know if the darkness is that bad. They have also repaved lots of the main roads and added bright reflectors on the streets. Just have to drive slowly and put your high beams on when you can. I've driven lots of times from the airport to the North Side and don't think anything of it. Maybe I'm just used to it.

Hi J! We used to park on a short street between houses that would fit about 6-8 cars that ended right in the middle of tunnels. I've heard that parking is now restricted there. Is that true? Where do you park when going to tunnels?
@YourHostJ
@YourHostJ 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark! I haven't been to Tunnels in probably a month or so, but I used that same parking area. I don't remember any restrictions, but the road has gotten pretty rough and full of muddy potholes so you have to be careful. But, if it's full - there is the main parking lot area just slightly further down the road on your right which you can't miss. Thanks for watching ❤️

What neighborhood on the north shore do you think is the safest (lowest drug/break in rates) if you had to guess? Thank you!
@YourHostJ
@YourHostJ 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! The North Shore overall is pretty safe, but if I had to truly take a guess I'd say Princeville and Hanalei. If you have a rental car though - unfortunately those, no matter where you are on island, can be targets. Just make sure to not leave anything valuable in the car.

@YourHostJ
@YourHostJ 3 жыл бұрын
Hi again! Hanalei is a bit of a distance from KCC (about an hour), but if you are taking online courses then, of course, you can be anywhere. There are different types of jobs that offer free housing with work (farms, on-site property managers, etc). Just depends what you want to do. I'd Google "jobs Hanalei" and go from there. You still have a few years ahead of you and you have lots of time to plan ahead, which is great!

@YourHostJ
@YourHostJ Жыл бұрын
Hello Laila! You'll have to look at co-op programs. I think it's harder to find jobs that include living arrangements when you don't live on island. I've noticed those are more word of mouth. There are of course things like property managers that include a unit with the job, but that requires a real estate license. If you are job hunting - look at craiglist and monster.com as there are things usually posted there as well. Good luck!
