Very informative. He is a good teacher and funny too. I'm a new Buddhist and I enjoy his teaching style. I read that he he used to be a dancer and a model. I find that very different from what I envision a Buddhist monk/tulku to be. May his teachings be beneficial to all sentient beings.

There's so much more to a mala then just a counting device. Now I know, thanks Rinpoche.

Another fantastic talk by Rinpoche. He gives such a clear explanation of something we often take for granted...we never think about why our mala is important to us. He gives you answers to questions you always wanted to ask (like why 108? and why have a mala anyway). AND, as though knowledge isn't enough ;), you also get humour all the way through. What more could you want? ;)

i love the Thangka, more and more i find it hard to find a bodhi seed malas that has that scent to it. you know the scent, the offensive odor that everyone complains about? oh well... still nice Thangka and couch.

I read gulu gulei on my malas, in.chinese its called 瑪瑙 its like a red tree wax thing....been citing for a long time, my malas have turned a dark red color and has gone very shiny and cold

I know he said for the purpose of the explanation he wouldn't go deep into the importance of 108. But 36 is a factor of 108. 6*6=36 36*2=72 36*3=108 there is some sacred mathematics here that you could go into, depending on how you look at it. For example there are six points to a star of david and six squared is thrity-six, times THREE (trinity) is 108. well like I said its how you want to look at it. But there is something very interesting. In a star, like a five-point star, equilateral five point star, the angle measures are ALL 36, 72,or 108. This star has been used for things such as representing baphomet, which also is related to mathematics within itself (bapho- baptise metis-mathematics) well you know, I'm not an expert or anything but wanted to share something

@savvy1954 no, we don't. in fact, the buddhist religion existed before christianity. And you do not need to be christian to be compassionate. Anyone can be. compassionate and caring, regardless of religion.Stereotyping like this should be avoided, as it closes your mind. And the bible doesn't apply to anyone but the christians who believe it, so we are not worried about believing in jesus and going to heaven, as we wish to reach nirvana, and attain buddha-hood.
