Spam is a canned meat made from pork shoulder and ham cuts. One of my favorite spam recipes is a breakfast combo of seasoned rice, spam, eggs, and dried seaweed. We ordered this spam meal at a restaurant where it was called a Hawaiian Breakfast, although it’s a pretty common dish in the Philippines, as well. Check out the video for Spam nutrition and ingredient info and how to make a quick spam breakfast in a skillet.
What country is the No.2 consumer of Spam behind the United States? SOUTH KOREA!

An awesome combo of well cooked spam, eggs, and rice. I love how you not only show how it's cooked but also explain the important info on the ingredients. The name Spiced Ham is the right one according to an article I read on the Guardian. It was the name suggested in a competition launched by the Geo. A. Hormel Company in 1937. An awesome info by you! Thank you so much, Chef Buck and CG!!

Spiced Ham was is certainly one of the kindest names I found for spam on the internet. I really liked the Turkey spam and I think going forward that's the one I'm going to purchase in the future--it tasted great and is a much healthier option compared to the other Spam offerings
@MrDarshD

@@ChefBuckRecipes Yes, you are right about the name! Now the spam is used for so many different kinds of meat that the name seems to have lost its relevance unless the container actually has ham. Thank you for sharing about the Turkey spam! I am sure that it must be more tender than others!

That was my breakfast last week sans the rice and nori. People love to mock Spam and vocalize how much they hate it, yet when the pandemic started, you couldn't find a can of it anywhere! I personally love it right out of the can, sliced on fresh bread with a tiny bit of mayo. It's just one of those things I eat that I can't explain why I love it. Thanks for doing an entire show on it. ❤️👍😋

that's very true...at the beginning of the pandemic spam and TP were premium items! And I'm kinda surprised how overwhelmingly positive the comments have been regarding spam...I expected a bit of anti-spam verbiage. Spam certainly isn't the ideal choice when it comes to fat and salt content, but I think the turkey spam is a tasty solution to that issue.

Yes. It seemed like all canned meats were running out, Even the different canned fish meats were hard to find. I think many people were stocking up in case everything is absolutely locked down. Even the so called essential workers. It took until last year to where people weren’t coming in to buy as much canned meats they can afford.

Yummy, yummy! Camera Girl looked really happy with her breakfast! Walmart's canned Great Value "luncheon meat" stands in well for Spam, at a better price, and they also have a reduced sodium version. I've been having the same thing for lunch every day: a 2-oz serving of lower-sodium lunch meat, diced and browned in the skillet on medium heat, scramble in the eggs (2 or 3), then sprinkle with 2 oz diced cheese. I flip it to finish melting the cheese, then serve. Using 3 eggs it provides a 40-gram wallop of protein. It works for supper, too, with a side salad. I used to buy the HEB store brand (Texas grocery chain), but they raised the price well above Walmart's, and I actually like the GV better anyway. Apparently I'm not the only person who's discovered that canned meat can be an economical source of protein when others get priced beyond my reach.

I don't remember ever having actual SPAM growing up but certainly we had canned ham -- the large triangular canned stuff and I even remember some canned corned beef. I can believe the #2 country to love spam is South Korea. It probably has to do with the extreme poverty and lack of meat and other foodstuff during and after the Korean War during which American soldiers probably introduced it to the local hungry population. If you're starving, you find ways to make even highly processed meat in a can seem like a king's feast.. And probably the same thing with the Phillipines where SPAM I'm told by my Fillipino care aid is highly coveted (they are available in the Phillipines but quite expensive) and Fillipinos visiting the Motherland make it a point to stock up on SPAM cans to bring as gifts to relatives. Anyway, great video on SPAM. It actually looks very tasty after a stint in the frying pan.

Another winner, Buck. Was just talking about SPAM yesterday with family member. Like the idea of serving with rice. And always with eggs. Usually I cook the Spam lite. @@ChefBuckRecipes I saw the other videos page and watched the corn beef hash recipe. Spinach is my favorite food and corned beef hash and eggs my second. I chucked a bit when you said, "Worste-sher-shta-shire" sauce. When me and my brother Scott would go to the drive in movies with our parents, often times we would build a "fort" with our blankets in the back seat of our old Oldsmobile and for fun we for some strange reason would every so often open the curtain of blankets and ask our parents who were intensely watching some film with Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson if they had any "Worste-sher-shta-shire" sauce and laugh! It was so dumb but so cute now as I reflect back on it. Thanks for what you do. I'm just now at nearly age 60 taking the time to learn cooking...as a hobby. I used to study philosophy, religion, law etc as hobbies but with declining vision it's not so easy to do anymore. I had planned to write a book in religious studies but I no longer have any association with a university to do the kind of intellectual work I wanted and also there is also the problem that nobody really reads books anymore. It's all this online stuff. Then, I though about publishing a cookbook of recipes from Nepal with my friend Lena and starting up a small restaurant, but she wouldn't commit or take the idea seriously. I'm not much a business minded person anyway so I guess it all worked out for the best. I hope to learn French cooking someday and cooking with Fish. Anyway, cooking is fun and therapeutic. I generally have the same problem with cast iron skillets, although they get better and better the more seasoned the skillet becomes. I try not to use too much detergent when cleaning my skillet (and no detergent at all if I can help it). I'll often set my skillet on a burner for just a moment after I wash it, just to dry it out, and then I'll apply a thin coating of oil with a paper towel. I try to remember not to cook tomatoes in my cast iron skillet, although I eventually forget and end up dumping a can of tomatoes in my skillet at some point...that always seems to foil any seasoning I've accrued, and then I have to start over from scratch. I'd say the main thing that makes my skillet easier to use is just keeping it oiled between uses.

Our favorite is hot and spicy. It's awesome. My guess for #2 is Korea. It's extremely popular there. It's where we got into it. Never ate it in the states. Did I miss what the #2 country is?

I didn't put the answer in the video, but you're right...South Korea is the number 2 consumer of spam behind the United States! I wouldn't have guessed that...I'd have guessed Philippines and been wrong

One big problem I see after reading the nutritional info on the can. There are six servings in the can. I can easily eat half of a can if I wanted to. I would end up with more than my supply of salt for the day.

I mean.. pork belly cured with salt, and smoke..bacon is better for you if you buy real bacon.. especially dry cured, cold cooked, the old fashioned way without nitrates. If you have flesh that would smell like a carcass if it sat out for 8 hours.. but instead was canned and left shelf stable for years? I mean… I eat spam. But comparing salt and fat numbers on spam vs bacon is hilarious 🤣

Spam and bacon are pretty interchangeable at my breakfast table, but as unhealthy as bacon is perceived, I think it edges out spam as the healthier option; that being said, I think I'll just be buying turkey spam in the future, cause I thought it was delicious.
