Dice the Spam into cubes about the size of a sugar cube. Do the same thing with white onion and potatoes. Throw the onion and the potatoes in a non-stick pan with a small amount of canola oil or whatever oil you like that can take higher temperatures. Put a lid on the pan and let the onion and potatoes cook. When you see that the onion is turning clear throw in the Spam and turn the heat up a little bit and stir often. Throw some fresh ground pepper in and a little bit of garlic in the last minute or so. Super easy and super cheap and it tastes surprisingly good.

Hawaii's love of spam was because of WW2 and the US Military... It was part of US military rations and it was also used to feed the locals, this is incidentally why spam is also popular in South Korea, all thanks to the US military.

I agree, additionally Spam is easily transported and holds up for a long time. Most islands use ship transported canned food because it is less expensive than an air shipment.

When you made this video 8 years ago we never thought we would be in this situation. NOW, With the current food shortages & insane prices to find episodes on how to use rations is extremely helpful. It's also nice to know we can still have flavor even if we can't get quality ingredients. Much love guys!

Love your channel Sam but I'm disappointed that you don't know how great Spam really is. In my Army days when in the field, the only hot meal we could look forward to was breakfast. This was powdered eggs, breakfast potatoes and fried spam. We all joked about it at the time but to this day I still fry up some spam for breakfast at least once a week. it's like comfort food for veterans!

I smile while at the same time I remember. Breakfast delight for me when I was in the army was S.O.S. which (as you know) was called Poop on a shingle. I'm not sure if it was the nickname that turned off so many fellow soldiers, but whenever that was breakfast there was so much leftover that seconds could always be had. I loved it whenever it was served.

I have only liked it fried on a spam and cheese sandwich with mayo, or fried and served with grits and toast. We ate a lot of it. My mom used to do this thing where she would cut the spam in 1/4 inch slices almost all the way through the bottom. Then she'd mix brown sugar and mustard and spread it between slices and over the top and bake it. It was so good! Not a runny egg fan myself, but I would probably just mix the egg like I was making a quiche, pour it over the rice and spam, and bake it.

The answers to your question, was WWII. Spam became a main staple in that time period due to same issues we see today with the shortages and all. I remember as a kid eating Spam and eggs (in the 70's) because it was quick and easy breakfast/dinner meal for a military family of 4. Thankfully there are videos around on how to make your own since even this is becoming, oddly enough, expensive. I remember when it was less than $1 a can...now a pack of 12 at Sam's or Costco go for better than $20. Like you said...think of it as a hotdog...just a product in a can and season it with what you have. Enjoying all the vids....even the old content!

I don't know if someone already mentioned considering how long ago this video was made but Hawaii and spam became a thing during World War II. Spam was given to soldiers because it was cheap and shelf stable and in hawaii there was food rationing and food restrictions because of the war and spam was one of the things rationed out. They were worried about supply lines considering the distance from the main land so they hoarded what they could just in case and since spam is basically a meat brick it lasted forever. I heard about this from my Grandfather who was in the pacific with the Army First Cav. It's not just Hawaii though i think other smaller islands in the pacific have that odd relation with spam.

rinse, slice, boil with potato's, or place in water in the fridge overnight. Squeeze dry. the eliminates most of th slat. Once fried to a crispy exterior, it tastes like hammy bacon. Love it on a burger, adds just enough "hammines" and salt.

I must comment...seven years after...about my escapades with canned meat aka spam. Last one I made was Argentina corned beef in a can, but, in a stand mixer mix the spam, mashed potatoes [fresh or leftover] butter and frozen vegetable of whatever you got in the freezer. Mix, form patties and either fry in a frying pan or bake in the oven. Yummy...you'd never know you started with canned meat

LOL… I can’t believe I’m correcting you, after all I’ve learned from you… BUT YOU DO NOT ADD SALT TO SPAM! 😱 It’s way salty already, and sometimes people soak their spam in water for 5 to 10 minutes first to pull some of the salt out and reduce the sodium. But another fun video, nonetheless! PS. Spam is also popular in Korea for the same reasons it’s popular in Hawaii. Meat is expensive having to be shipped in all the time.

I’m a bit in shock that none of you have ever tried Spam, I thought that almost everybody has had it. It would be interesting to know what percentage of the population has or not. As a octogenarian, I’m guessing that Spam and the cold cut ‘spiced ham’ was a staple for most of us in the 40s and 50s and then began to peter out as we became more affluent. By deserting what was already there, I’m afraid some economic and often great foods went by the wayside. People today seem to prefer spending. Amazing!

My wife converted when I made crispy SPAM tacos and Hickory SPAM fried egg sandwiches. She now ask for them often. The tip is what you found out...crispy. Easy and quick to make, plus taste. As I understand it, SPAM became a favorite in Hawaiian islands during WW2 when meat was hard to get but the US Military had plenty of this canned meat. Come on Sam, the discussion topic on a food show? The serving would a bit small for a meal. Thanks.

Spam Musubi! One of my favorite "Hawaiian" treats Oh, moo-soo-bee. Take 2 slices of spam, 1/16 to 1/8th inch thick. Fry until looking just right, then put some Aloha brand teriyaki sauce in the pan, simmer until all gone. Get a slab of sticky rice, 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick, the same shape as the spam slices. Use the can, in Hawaii, they have fancy rice presses, to form the rice, but just use the can. A piece of spam, on each side of the rice, and wrap with teriyaki nori, (Flat seaweed.) A bit of Aloha brand shoyu, and it is just great. (Aloha brand IS a local brand, but the flavor is NOTHING like the usual stuff.) steve

SPAM was produced as a ration during ww2. Small containment and perfect source of protien and easily packed by a GI on the move. High sodium content for preservation for extended periods of time. Became a mainstay in the 40's because of rationing stateside as well. SOS was made at the MESS HALL with SPAM. when the kitchen was shy on cured chipped beef, they would substitute SPAM.

We here in Hawaii has a Very High cost of living so many families, college students, etc makes SPAM a Variety of ways! It’s very economic if you’re low in cash and it’s very good for our Hurricane Rations Supply. It’s normally best cooked fried in a skillet to a nice crispy edge and added to Anything your mind can Create, when I was in the Army I used to add it to my Split-Pea with Ham can Soup, Recipe: 1half can Spam, 1 can Campbell’s Split-Pea w/Ham soup, 2 packages of (Your Favorite) Ramen w/o the spice (packets), (Optional) 1 cup (your Favorite) Frozen Veggie (I use a Mix-Vegetable), 1). In a skillet preferably a Cast Iron or your Fav. Non-Stick pan, Cut SPAM into small Dices and fry to Browning. 2). In a 4-5 Quart Pot or Sauce Pan place the 1 can Split-Pea Soup and fill that can two times with Water and add to pot and On Med heat. Note: the one Can Soup normally uses one can of water, and the Ramen usually uses about two cups of water, you can adjust thickness of the soup with more or less water. 3). When Soup starts to boil lower heat and Simmer, then add your 2 packages of Ramen to Soup and Cup of Frozen Vegetables into Soup stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes or until Noodles are ready. Serves about 3-4 Soldiers lol.

i love Spam (Deviled Ham, too) and i've been fantasizing about a Hawaiian Bread Pudding, to feature Bacon Spam, Pineapple, Jalapenos, toasted cubed Challah (plain or Raisin) or Brioche or Hawaiian Rolls or a combination thereof, a custard base to soak the bread(s) in, and Hot Honey to drizzle over top. the Spam = cubed & fried in some bacon grease to get a crispy crust all over; fresh chunks of pineapple seared in a grill pan; unseeded jalapenos sliced into 1/4"-thick rings; and possibly some sweet onion, chunked and partially caramelized for ~20ish minutes with bacon grease and balsamic vinegar. the liquid should maybe be Half-&-Half (or half each of Heavy Cream and Whole Milk). sprinkle toasted ground sesame seeds mixed with chopped candied ginger over top and bake at ~325-350F (?) till it smells good enough to eat. (or should the topping wait till it's out of the oven?) and could chopped cilantro leaves and tender stems be mixed in the topping? i've never made it, because i just dreamed it up. but bits and pieces of the recipe have been in the back of my mind for years. i'm feeling the urge to add diced, sauteed eggplant cubes (unpeeled) that were soaked, before being crisped, in a balsamic vinegar + white sugar slurry. finally, mix Bob's Hot Honey + the balsamic vinegar of your choice cooked down into a reduction; drizzle over pudding before serving. or, instead of going the sweet + tangy route, do a tahini-based sauce to drizzle over.

I once opened a can of Spam and the meat was grey. In all of 54 years of eating the stuff had gotten a hold of a bad can of Spam. My store replaced it right away after laughing.
