When you do ruin a pair of waders, don't throw them out, cut the feet off and use them as bibs. Great for winter in the boat.

After decades of Orvis & Simms waders I was shopping for my first neoprene waders to go winter fly fishing ... and now I know to make sure they are camo & boot foot too.

bought a pair of Caddis neoprene waders this year and it was a game changer. They are super warm and comfortable. I got the stocking foot and I'm glad I did. I love my Korkers and I feel like the stakes are too high during Winter to go with whatever happens to be attached to a $100 pair of waders. Last thing I wanna do is go down due to slippery boots.

You might think they’re the equivalent to moonshine rods, but I’ve been really impressed with my Dryft waders. Wore out a pair of G3’s and wanted the zipper. I figured for $350 I’d take a chance. Had them for about two years now and they’re holding up way better than I thought they would. Doing my best to beat them up too....not super easy on my gear. LOL!!! Good vid by the way. I enjoy the heck out of them.

could not agree more about the pants style waders, I have been using them for about the past 6 years and I love them, way easier to get on, so much cooler in the summer months, and easier to have a poop when nature calls. I buy mine at Bass Pro (their brand) and they cost 145 bucks Canadian. When they start leaking I wear them anyway because most of the time it is summer and I don't care if I get wet (sounds funny but more times then not I wear them to keep the mud, sticks, ticks and other river shit off my legs). I still have chest waders but asides from times when I know the water is high (usually spring when it is also cold) or salmon fishing in the fall they stay hanging in my tying room.

Kokatat! They make some amazing dry suits, I'm a white-water kayaker they are the best IMO. But they make some really good pants with Velcro on the waste, they are not advertised as fishing waders, but they have lifetime warranty, you can send them in to have them repaired, they will patch all those black berry bush pin holes and send them back to you. If you backpack/camp in they are must haves, super light, breathable. Check them out.

I LOVED my Dan Baileys. They were a little bulky (I should have tried one size smaller maybe?), but lasted FOREVER. Hated stepping up to my SIMS, only because of the price, but they have the features closest to what I was used to (e.g. lined handwarmer pockets, good straps, etc.); so far no complaints in my second year and I fish all four seasons. Ben, would LOVE to see you evaluate "off brands" that seem to get high ratings but don't know anyone personally that's used a pair (e.g. Frog Toggs, etc.).

I remember my Dad having a pair of hip boots he wore them fishing, hunting and doing chores around the farm they were old school green rubber with yellow trim and yellow rubber souls and they never wore out I think he bought them at a "Western Auto" hardware store which are now out of business. I like hip boots myself for cold stream fishing but I wish I could find a pair like the ones my Dad had they were bullet proof but probably really hot and really heavy.

First of all, zippered waders make no difference for women. Second, in my experience no well made waders really "die", you just have to use a lot of Aquaseal and know where the leaks are and not wade too deep. They will still keep you warm. Granted this is coming from someone who is too cheap to buy new waders, but buying and using 4 bottles of Aquaseal in a month is acceptable.

I went with the patagonia expedition zip fronts. My logic was that patagonia had some issues and a bad reputation for waders for a while and when they came out with the expeditions it was clear they really wanted to change that reputation and get some credibility back in their wader game. You can tell they overbuilt the crap out of them as soon as you pick them up. I just wish they were made in the USA rather than vietnam, especially for the price. Conversely, Simms has been the defacto wader company for so long, that my logic there was that they have kind of rested on their laurels. From talking to a lot of people and reading a lot online, it definitely sounds like Simms waders aren't as durable as they once were. I get that peoples experiences with waders can vary wildly and it is all anecdotal... But if simms makes their waders nuclear then they cant sell you a new pair every other year so like I said... Logic lol. But hey I also have korkers, so now all I need is to get a moonshine rod, go catch a CUTTIE on it, and take a pic with a tail lift and I will complete my transformation into the anti huge fly fisherman. Oh, and after I throw the cuttie back, I'll use my leader straightener to straighten out my tippet. That is tied to a tippet ring.

I think it’s problematic to recommend wading pants on account of “not usually going more than waist deep”, though. The fact is, if you DO go waist deep, or even close to waist deep, wading pants won’t cut it… you’ll take on water if you lean, if you step into even a shallow depression while moving, or if there’s any disturbances on the water. So while wading pants sit waist-high on the body, they’re really only good for water as deep as mid-thigh. For waist-deep water, chest waders are really needed.

If the water is moving, you should not be going into it above your waste. Fast moving water at knee height is enough to make you swim. I'm a ww kayaker, with a life vest, dry suit and we teach to not stand up until you can crawl on all fours if you swim. Current is not something to underestimate.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 жыл бұрын
@@kymerdeth never said you should go in above your waist. I said that if you’re going in waist deep, or even close to waist deep, a pair of wading pants that stop at your waist sure as heck aren’t gonna cut it. It’s like this: hip waders are only good for wading a bit over knee deep… pants waders are good for mid-thigh… chest waders are for wading waist deep. With each type you realistically need to give yourself a good 6” of extra insurance, so to speak, above the depth you intend to wade, otherwise splashes, walking, leaning, etc can lead to water occasionally over-topping your waders of choice.
