After 50 years of painting, you might think that I would
have a reasonable grasp on the process. But, nope.
It's still the same frustrating and exciting activity it was
at age 18 as it is at 70+, offering the same conflicts
and delights. I have been fortunate to have been able
to paint while raising a family, teaching and through
the various moves from place to place. The work
reflects those changes, in particular the move to Maine
in 2021. At that time, I wanted to paint more outside of
the studio and reference the current environment .
While Maine's natural landscape is wild and beautiful ,
my interest was in human activity. I enjoy the liveliness
and challenge of painting a constantly moving world.
Currently, my subject matter has shifted from plein-air
painting to invented depictions of personal fables
using plants, animals and insects. This new endeavor
begins with an observed setting ie; landscape ,
shoreline, roads etc. then I incorporate the
players-small animals, insects and plants.

What an adorable final sentiment! My rationale is "but I can't die because who will paint my paintings then?"

Thanks for your video. I was searching via Europe, traveling 3x to Maine. Searsport was the place we wished to find a place for studios and living. No luck. Now I'm back in Germany and wondering what the world will give us next. It's unsettling. Enjoy your life there.

In art school we heard language regarding recipe of making art as a terrible unholy thing. We were taught certain limited technical things like how to stretch and prime a canvas or watercolor paper, but never ever were we told what or how regarding the painting process. We all taught ourselves through research, observation and hit and miss and miss again until we were okay with our results and many times we were told to start over, or do it again, or try some other way. Most everyone got grades of A or B so that was never the insentive for working.

Wonderful work and interview Normal Art talk sounds like a linebacker babbling about the game. Beside Gods intervention they need to win the next one. You did 8 out of 10 keep on keeping on

After a long time painting portraits I gradually lost interest. I’m forever grateful that the desire to paint figurative illustrations replaced my desire to paint portraits. I also moved from oil paint on canvas to pencil, ink and watercolors all tucked away in large format Strathmore watercolor paper books.

I have never liked the term "self taught " I think a better term is "self talent " . Because you need the talent to do what you do. With that talent , then you learn things and you teach yourself . Art schools are or should be teaching you methods and how to use materials . If you don't have the talent then all the teachings will mean nothing to you. People think you didn't go to school if you say self taught . Maybe you did go to art school and maybe you didn't and that should not matter . You don't need to if you are talented . There are a lot of great artists that became great all on their own just because of their talent . I have known people that say they are artists , but have not talent , but are doing art from what the school taught them to do.
