Good bless him, he so lucky to have her beside him 😍 My bird's red color is so pale now 😢 Is that because he is 11 and a half years old ? Or there is another reasons ?

The body language of a goldfinch is really similar to that of a canary! But the open beak seems unique to goldfinches! It's really cute! 😍

It's so awesome that you upload again and Leporello looks so happy. I've been watching your videos for a while and I am thinking of buying a canary (although I am gonna give it a few months more though because, while I am very happy with the idea, I don't want do do anything on impulse). I am playing classical musical too and I would like to ask if owning birds has ever caused any sort of hindrance in your musical life. Sorry for the bad english and love from Greece 😊

Hi Andy, great that you're taking your time in getting a bird! They are quite the commitment - you can expect a canary to live for at least ten years, and he will need four hours of free flight and at least half an hour of interaction with you daily. It's best to keep canaries as a pair - we humans have our jobs, our families, our hobbies, but our birds only have us! And yes, to be honest, I have been travelling a lot less since I got Leporello six and a half years ago - it was a compromise I was willing to make, but it might not be so easy for everyone. Other than that, he hasn't hindered me - his never-ending zest for life and song always motivates me to practise, and my clients, colleagues and students all love him. Hope this helps!

Adorable!! Your body language videos really have made me feel like I understand my finch better, thank you for that ❤️ I was wondering if I could ask you a bird body language related question? I only recently (little over a month) “took over” taking care of my finch (the finch is technically my stepdads bird, but ever since he told me he didn’t think the bird is as pretty/endearing as the goldfinches the previously had -because this one is “only” a hybrid and pretty feisty- I felt like my stepdad didn’t deserve to raise that gorgeous boy). Anyways, setting the background information no one asked for aside. I wondered if it’s normal for finches to exhibit conflicting types of body languages? He does happily chirp when I’m around, shows he’s excited when I talk to him, closes his eyes as a sign of trust,.. but he also tries to bite my fingers (while clapping his wings a little) if I hand feed him seeds (he eats the seed first and if I haven’t put my hand away quickly enough, he starts biting). Sometimes he also attacks my hands if I try to change his water (it’s removable from outside the cage so my hands are never in his home),.. Is this a sign that he actually doesn’t trust me? Or that he doesn’t like it when I hand feed him for example? I’ve followed your videos and they have helped greatly, it’s only when he sees my fingers coming too close he starts getting attacky. Should I stop putting my hands close to him? I feel like I’ve almost wrote you an essay, sorry for the long comment xD And I wish you and Leporello a lovely day!
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 3 жыл бұрын
No reason to apologise, I like long essays! How lovely of you to take on your bird. Believe it or not, Leporello wasn't wanted by his breeder either! I think animals can feel if somebody is good to them, and it sounds as if you and your bird already have an exceptional bond. If he attacks your hand, that's a good sign - it means he doesn't see you as a source of danger, but as one of his kind! Finches and especially hybrids are fighters, and there's no harm done if he pecks at you; it's just what they do. If it bothers you, or if you feel that he gets a little too stressed, it can be a good idea to back away a little. He will appreciate you respecting his boundaries, and love you even more in return. That said, are you even a bird owner if you don't annoy your bird every once in a while? Probably not (I'm definitely guilty here)!

@@leporellothegoldfinch Thank you so much for responding! My canary open his beak, but I think it's just to clean or something. It's a little different. It's hard to learn their language by trial and error if you can't confirm when you are right.
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 3 жыл бұрын
You're right, canaries don't show affection by opening their beaks (seems to be a goldfinch thing) - when they open their beaks, it's usually just to yawn. And yes, trial and error takes a while, but there'll be a magical moment when one gesture or another suddenly falls into place and you and your bird understand each other perfectly. You're clearly a keen observer of your canary, so it's only a matter of time! :)

Hello 👋🏼 love your videos! Very informative - Out of curiosity, is Leporello sort of potty trained? I’ve seen some cockatiels and other birds get used to going on a specific perch and some even go if asked but I was curious about finches. Just generally curious if they go often when out and about.

Hi there! Leporello generally goes in his cage or on his perch, and I take care to place him back there when he's been sitting on my hand or shoulder for a longer while. Accidents happen on occasion, but it literally isn't a big problem. Keeping a box of tissues nearby helps, too.

Hi. It is nice to see that cute bird again! 😍 Two month ago I became a canary owner. At first bird was curious about people, we became friends really fast. Even in the morning she could sit on me or nearby while I was sleeping. She still sits on my head, shoulder but her behaviour has changed. Recently she has started to fly around the apartment from early morning till almost evening and is not intrested in playing with her favourite things or people. She stops flying only when she gets hungry and after eating her flights resume. I am in despair 😞. Do you have any idea what has happened to her? And what can I do?
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 3 жыл бұрын
It might be seasonal depression (yes, that really exists in birds). It is a good idea to get her checked out by an avian vet, and to buy her a special, flicker-free bird lamp so that she'll get her daily dose of sunlight. Birds kept indoors don't get nearly enough sunlight as they should, and it messes with their endocrine system, causing all sorts of behavioural problems.

In a different room, hide your face and hair with a mask and towel, take your canary's cage (with him in it) to a room that can be completely darkened, and whatever you do, DON'T SPEAK or make any noises (your bird will recognise your voice)! Once in a dark room, take out the canary from his cage (he won't put up much of a fight if you grab him quickly, since he can't see you), treat him for mites and swiftly and SILENTLY put him back into the cage. Place the cage back to its regular place, then go to a different room and remove your costume. The canary won't know what happened to him and won't associate the ordeal with you.

flower rain is right, patience is everything - birds need a while to venture into unknown territory. This can take weeks, but it will happen eventually. You can make it easier for your birds by offering a treat such as millet on top of their cage - they'll probably be curious to come out within a matter of days!

If your bird feel afraid he won't get out of the cage. Before you need creating a relationship with him. Pass time with him, talk softly with him, and gives him food on your hand. The birds are very sensibles creatures and they like the habit. With time he will see you as a freind.

We took them out and since we dont have an incubator, we put it in a warm place and we put 2 lamps around it. The eggs seem to grow, one of the eggs had a crack on it (theres 2 eggs) but we sealed it! Do you think we should fix something to help the chick grow faster? And the thing I'm most worried about it where should I keep them when they're so young. I can't put them back with their parents. I dont think they feed them and keep them warm. Hi there! I have another question, I hope that’s okay! Do you have any tips on how a bird owner should behave when their bird is flying to them? I admit I’m still not completely used to having a flying pet, so a small part of me gets scared he’ll land on my face or use his claws to hurt me (ridiculous thoughts I know 🤣). I think he senses that. Cuz when my hybrid flies free he tends to come in my direction, but as soon as he’s near enough to land he heads right back onto his cage. The closest he’s ever been is landing on my bed for a couple of seconds (I was crying over a movie, I choose to believe he came to comfort me 😂). Is there anything I can do to encourage him to stay longer? I want him to feel more comfortable outside the cage/with me. I’m currently working on getting him to land onto a table, I’m hoping it’ll become a ‘neutral zone’ where we can hang out together. But maybe there’s other things to be done? Hand feeding him isn’t an option, he still REALLY dislikes fingers and given what he’s been through before I got him I doubt it’ll change (I got him when he was 7) 😕
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, good news first: Birds can and do change, even after seven years -- and they're great at differentiating between people! It's admirable that you're making an effort to understand him. One of the most important parts of making a bird trust you: Move SLOWLY. When you're scared of him landing on you, you're likely shrinking just a little bit, but very quickly, and that will scare him off.! (In the animal world, predators move abruptly.) Stay very, very still, and he will land on you eventually. That said, finches can take a time to start trusting you enough to land on you; Leporello took a couple of years, long after he was hand-tamed, to land on me (but he's a scaredy-cat, and hybrids are often bolder). Best of success!
@anoniempjeeeuh
@anoniempjeeeuh 3 жыл бұрын
@@leporellothegoldfinch Thank you so much, I’ll keep all of that in mind! Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if he never lands on me, the only thing I would want is for him to hang out (more) around me at least. So I’ll try to keep as still as possible ☺️ I’ll also resume trying to get him used to my hand, I had no idea they were so good at differentiating between people. Thanks again for the advice. Wishing you and Leporello all the best!

@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank you for your kind words. Yes, theoretically every bird can be trained, though bear in mind it's a long process - building a friendship takes continuous effort over months and years, but the payoff is worth it. I've found most birds to be very loyal, but I'd never leave a window open when the bird is out - for the simple reason that the bird doesn't know what the house looks like from the outside, and might not find their way back.

Hello, can you help me for a bit? You think a parrot that is easily stressed, is one and a half years old that i got from someone with a kid and I had to hold in my hand only once to give a treatment will ever trust me? My red rump parrot, Kiwi… I feel like I can’t make any progress…. I really want to bond with him and for him to trust me and my boyfriend but the only times he barely comes close to us is when he is hungry and we feed him vegetables/spray millet… and he doesn’t even do that anymore because he got used to me giving up and putting the food in his bowl after all. We spend time with him daily and he’s cage is open most times during the day. He is only interested in the birds outside (his favourite spot is next to the window) and doesn’t trust us enough to want to socialize… it’s so sad seeing him depressed because the birds outside don’t notice him :(…. And now that it’s winter, there are less and less birds outside and he doesn’t really even want to get out of his cage, just sleeping most of the day…. How can I make him trust me faster..so we can interact.. so he doesn’t get depressed…. I tried getting him a girly but not a wild one and I have to wait until spring to get a baby girl bird… I change food daily sometimes when he is in, sometimes out… and changing the papers also when he is in.. I will avoid doing it from now on. I just wish he’s stop being at least a little scared of us so I can build from there. Thank you for reading!

I hope one day you marry him (with another bird) so that there could be Leporello junior and so that you can continue his story because goldfinches live maximum 15 years. You said that he hates being with another bird so my point is did you try an American goldfinch, with me it worked

Unfortunately I am in Europe, there are no breeders for American goldfinches here (and I'm pretty sure their import would be illegal) :(

@@leporellothegoldfinch I'm sorry than, in my country it's legal because in September and October they pass in our country so I catch them, and of course if the bird isn't happy I free him
