My cockatiel eats out of my hand perfectly, anytime my finger goes near him he opens his mouth a little bit and makes a popping noise, I have touched him but he won’t let my finger go anywhere near him without a treat, he hasn’t bit me yet. But I fear he will. I have a high pain tolerance but it’s still very hard for me to do anything with him. He won’t let me hold him.

Small birds (finches, canaries...), see humans as a predator. But when they trust you, you took the effort to behave in a way the bird understands. They ignore your size and simply treat you as their equal. It's such a rewarding feeling! I hope your finch continues to live a long and happy life!

I LOVE this video! It brings so much hope to those of us who have scared our bird(s). Since I began watching your videos I started experimenting with a colony of birds around the pond where I work. As of this last week, there is a red winged blackbird that has been following me & "chatting" with me on my breaks. Yesterday it had a worm. It chirped at me, landed above my head in the tree I was under, & then it went to it's nest & I heard babies! Then it came back & chatted me up as usual. Thank you so much for sharing your information to the world. You are making a difference in many lives. Don't ever stop 💖

Does someone know why a bird starts being aggressive towards you out of nowhere? A few months ago my grandma got a parrot and although I'm more of a cat person and don't have any experience with birds I really like them, for the same reason I only handled the bird once or twice and didn't pay much attention to him, then one time I wasn't aware he was out of his cage while I was looking for something and out of nowhere he started attacking me, he bit me in the neck and since then he gets really angry whenever I'm around, he's only aggressive towards me as far as I know and it makes me sad.
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, and it is important to understand why your grandmother's bird acts the way he does. You say you are not much of a bird person - that is completely okay. But it likely also means that you may not be able to read bird body language yet. Birds, especially parrots, tend to bond with a single person; they have a tendency to defend their person against rivals (you), especially at this time of year, when it is mating season. Unfortunately, with some parrots, there is little that can be done except staying out of "their" territory (the room that they're normally in). But what you can try is 1) read about parrot body language online, so that you can spot the signs before an attack, and 2) occasionally do some positive conditioning with your grandmother's parrot (feeding him treats when he ignores you/isn't aggressive, and most of all: moving VERY slowly and predictably when you're around the parrot). Hope this helps!
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 5 жыл бұрын
PS. It's also important to remember that the parrot's actions are his naturally programmed behaviour, and that it doesn't have anything to do with you as a person. He's simply bonded to your grandmama and does what he would do in the wild: try to protect her and their living space. Just as a bit of consolation :)

Hey HugaBuga, lovely to see you around - but with what terrible news! I can't imagine what you must be going through, I am so sorry for your loss. If it's any consolation, Schopenhauer also said that every bird automatically contains the essence of all other birds - so despite your understandable pain, if you ever get another bird, you'll be able to find a lot of your mule's spirit and little antics in the new one. Your little friend may have passed, but his nature and spirit lives on forever, indestructibly - in all the mules which exist today and will exist in the future. You have lost the one you knew - but there is still much of his nature in this world, and you might just find him again. Sending you lots of love!

@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, parrots are incredibly intelligent species with a strong flock drive. Your parrot escapes because he is bored and lonely. First of all, please remove the mirror. They are harmful to birds for a multitude of reasons. Second, please consider getting a second parrot of the same species, or if that's not possible, rehoming your current parrot to a place where he has companionship. They absolutely must not live alone or they will never be happy.

I know birds can't understand things like hatred or love, but how much are they capable of attachment? If i gain the trust of my bird and then say, go on a trip without him and come back, will he have "missed" me to an extent?
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 5 жыл бұрын
Yes! By "not understanding love", I mean that they don't understand romantic love the way we do, with our projections and complex feelings. Rather, animals form bonds based on repeated positive interaction. At some point, a bird will start associating positivity and pleasantness with YOU, not the things you do - which is why it's important to not only train using food (otherwise you'll always be just a source of snacks, lol). Now, birds can get VERY attached to their owner - and unlike other animals such as dogs or cats, they generally won't automatically get attached to everyone who feeds them. They are profoundly capable of affection for "their" human, if you're willing to put in the effort and time to earn it.

@leporellothegoldfinch

It's never too late! Take it as a life lesson in patience (and that sometimes, spending five minutes extra can save you a lot of time in the long run). Start over in your taming process and treat your bird as if he was new. Make sure to respect his boundaries, reward him when he stays calm and when he hisses, back off/don't feed him treats! 15 weeks is very young for a bird, everything is possible -- you can do it!

According to studies on Alex the Parrot, who you would probably find interesting too if you're a "bird person", at least some birds actually do have a basic understanding of abstract thought, (though definitely not on the same level as people)! It is very interesting stuff. Alex, for example, seemed to have the understanding that a small child would, because he was taught to speak very basic language without copying people. He was also very capable of feeling anger or frustration. Other birds may also be able to at least get frustrated by things, though probably only in the same way that a toddler does, so it is not the same thing as feeling hatred. In addition to this, experiments have shown that crows will hold grudges and harass people they believe to have hurt one of their kind! Crows are one of the most intelligent birds, so this definitely doesn't apply to all birds, but it's still interesting all the same, because it shows that there are animals that have a very simple grasp on the idea of "hatred", but most of them of course probably don't. Anyway, keep making good content! I love your videos, and they've helped me a lot when it comes to bonding with my bird. It is very hard to find videos about actually bonding with finches, since most finch owners do not bother with it.

I would love to know how to tame budgies while we also have 2 dogs and 2 cats... so we cant really let them out of the cage alot and we cant really afford another cage..

I'm going to make this brief. If you can't let your birds out of the cage every single day for at least 4-6 hours, please find another home for them which can. Birds must fly; when they don't, they get stressed, anxious and depressed, not to speak of the whole slew of physical health problems that comes with lack of exercise (which birds need to survive, unlike mammals). Third and finally, you also can't form a relationship with a purely caged bird. So, in this case, my advice would be to think about rehoming (!) the birds ( _not_ setting them free).

Yesterday My mom just got me 4 birds and one of them hates me. I heard that spending time with your bird and giving them treats might stop hating you. I tried to give him a treat but is very afraid of me and doesn’t want to get out of his cage he doesn’t play with his toys and is very bored I got so many toys but he doesn’t even play with them but he does eat a lot. And spends time with his other friend . I tried to get him out of the cage but he’s scared and doesn’t want to get near me. For no reason

Please respect that bird. He is likely afraid to death of you. He might just be timid, shy, or he might be ill. If he seems apathetic, take him to the vet. NEVER force an animal to do something. It will backfire spectacularly, and everyone will be unhappy.

Acually, birds can understand time and things like the past and the future. Other animals are incapable of this and I think this is what makes birds so appealing to have as pets because they are like humans i this way.

Don't get a bird if you have a cat. Period. Not only is it a disaster waiting to happen, but it also causes stress for both animals. The cat, because it can't live out its hunting instinct, and the birds because they would be in constant fear. Just don't do it.

Hello again.. you always manage to find such an interesting topic. But they do show the opposite as in love, right? Gigi is ok, this weekend I did not manage to spend the amount of time I usually do with him.. but anyway.. still bonded with me :) A couple of weeks ago I went to Munich and a day trip to Salzburg.. how beautiful and perfect.. my wife and I loved it. First time I went to Austria. Bought some Mozart chocolates of course :) :) Nice day..

Hi there, I'm sure Gigi and you are inseparable by now :) I'm not sure whether animals understand love as we do, I'm leaning towards the opinion that it is mostly procreative instinct + good experience... though Schopenhauer would say that the same goes for humans, too 😆 Salzburg is a very pretty town, a bit like Vienna but in miniature. Glad you enjoyed it! :) Greetings to your wife, and of course to Gigi!

Sometimes causing fear is unavailable. At least I can't get any of my birds to the vet without having to catch the sick bird. Thankfully this hasn't happened too often and after I don't have to catch any bird for vet trips or medication anymore they usually relax after a couple of days.
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 3 жыл бұрын
Here's a tip to catch a bird while minimising fear: Take the cage to a room that can be completely darkened (e.g. the bathroom). Turn off the lights. Birds see very poorly in the dark. Now you can easily pick them off the perch with no chasing at all. Still stressful for them, but not as stressful as being chased by their human in broad daylight.
@PiedraDeIjada
@PiedraDeIjada 3 жыл бұрын
@@leporellothegoldfinch that's what I'm doing. Often works quite well, but not always. Last year one of my birds had an eye infection and he HATED the eyedrops. And after a couple of days he actually got better at giving me a hard time catching him. Interestingly enough the bird that got the medication was the first one to relax, while the other 5 were a bit weary of me. I don't think it can be done without causing any stress (except if you have a very tame bird). But given the fact that them being a bit weary of me never lasted long lets me hope I successfully minimised the fear I had to cause.
@PiedraDeIjada
@PiedraDeIjada 3 жыл бұрын
Also I just realized how I said my bird really HATED the eyedrops on a video about how birds don't hate 😂🤦 But given his reaction it must have been very unpleasant. At some point he was in such a bad mood that the vet had to be careful to not be bitten by him 😅

What bird do you have? Some birds like canaries and many finches just naturally hate being touched. One can train them but they're biologically hard-wired to not like it (not even from other birds). Birds tend not to be cuddly pets in general.
