The 2 subsonic rounds will be very similar in velocity out of a 16" barrel due to the powder burning up before the round can leave the barrel and will actually start to loose a bit of speed. Try them both out of an 8"-10" barrel.

Thanks for a swell Christmas present, this video. You know I'm fascinated with firearm ballistics, always have been. Nice that you take the time to show and describe what you're doing. Almost like school. I didn't know about the BB calibration with gelatin. Interesting too about your ammo choices. Didn't know there was a Stinger "type" ammo with segmented bullets. I remember being very impressed with the ballistics of the CCI QUIK-SHOK hyper velocity fodder some years back. Really like your 10/22, that gun's just got style. And more to come you say?? Oh yeah, the intro is kinda cool.
@BuckeyeBallistics

Well I figured since it was my first ballistic gel video, that I should show (for those who don't know) how you calibrate the block to make sure you made it right, and also to show (for those who both do and don't know) that I made it right, being that it was my first ever block. In future videos I won't show this process, but rather, just briefly show/include the calibration results for those who would want to know them for varification. The 10/22 is Rugers "Tiger" stock, and actually has a tiger face on one side of the buttstock. We did a quick review of this gun along with their red "wild hog" stock 10/22 a few month ago if you want to see more of it/them. As for the intro, the "hip hop" or "funk" style music is the only thing I didn't feel 100% confident about. I'm ok with it, but it may not be super fitting for gun content and might get a few lowbrow reactions, which is why I asked people what they thought about it. When I can find some decent royalty free rock music, it will be replaced with that, which I think will be more fitting. Also I plan to change the intro every few months with recent clips as I progress.

To quote Paul Harrell,"Well we crunched the numbers and here is one of those opportunities to point out those caveats I was talking about. Chronographs don't always agree with each other and various environmental factors like elevation, barometric pressure, ambient temperature can affect chronograph results. " I believe CCI is using the Kimber Classic bolt action 22" barrel instead of your Ruger 10/22 18.5" semi-auto barrel. Velocity is lost by self-loading semi-automatics up front, so your Quiet and Subsonic lost the highest percentage.

That may be true, but I have been using this chrono for some time now with many different calibers, even including bb guns and pellet guns, and it always picks up anything I shoot over it and has always been very accurate. Now that doesn't mean it isn't possible for it to fudge up, but given my recent experience with multiple dud rounds from CCI, I give the nod to my chrono for sure.

No, CCI has gone down hill in the past couple years as I hinted on with my first comment, and in this very video. I loved CCI for 20 years, and for 20 years would agree that they were the golden standard. That is, until I got 1, possibly 2 CCI squib loads earlier this year while reviewing the Taurus TX22. Then to make matters worse, they called me a liar when I told them. Well I did some research, and as a couple commenters pointed out as well, CCI was bought out by ATK/Vista Outdoors. So CCI is no longer the CCI you and I used to know, which explains why the quality has gone to crap. I have had many viewiers come forward in the past few months also, telling me how they were having issues with CCI ammo as well, and many stating that it never used to be like that with their product. So their brand has definately gone down the drain...

For a segmenting round to compare: www.luckygunner.com/22-lr-37-cphp-high-energy-winchester-varmint-he-50-rounds#geltest As I think I said, Aquila's velocities are not 1700fps as advertised. www.aguilaammo.com/ammunition/1b220298/ .22LR, 30gr CPRN, Aguila Supermaximum Hyper Velocity kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJ6VnJWF29jJo4k.html www.luckygunner.com/labs/pocket-pistol-caliber-gel-test-results/#22LR So, Aquila does perform, but you should always fire three shots and CCI gets the mandatory penetration minimum reliably. 40 Grain CPHP - CCI Velocitor www.luckygunner.com/cci-22-lr-ammo-for-sale-22lr40cphpvelocitorccimm-50#geltest

@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And that's a good point- Several years ago I did a video displaying how hollow points don't open up much when fired out of a pistol due to the lower velocities, thus rendering them a round nose and ineffective. I actually used a mk1 in that video, which surprisingly did seem to get the hp's to open up some, albeit not as much as my rifle did. This was a water filled pop can test, but you could tell the hp's were opening up compared to the round nose's due to the more explosive hits. I concluded in that video though that the longer barrel of the mk1 I was using must have gave enough velocity to provide some expansion, as my p22 with a shorter barrel did not achieve these results in the past. With that being said, the velocity from the mk1 would drop to p22 levels by 20-25 yards I would imagine. As far as these segmented rounds splitting into 3 from a pistol, I'm confident that at least the subsonic round and up would, as they would still be traveling over 700fps out of a pistol. The quiets I'm not sure, as they would probably be in the 500fps range from a pistol. But they wouldn't cycle a semi-auto pistol anyway... Currently I'm without a .22 pistol, but when I have access to one again I will try to redo the test with a pistol and see what happens. I got a bunch of other .22 ammo to test as well, comming up soon.

But I was trained on a mk1 by my father and that pistol was stolen. So I had to replace it for sentinel reasons. I’ll probably end up getting the newest version of the Ruger mkIV. It seems that the mkIV is the best version yet it has all the features you want and none of the ones you don’t. In my opinion the mk3 was the worst version out of all of them. Fancy! You're going to have to change the name of your channel to "HOLLYWOOD Guns&Cars", now! ;-) Naw, just kidding. That was an interesting way to slice up the Ballistics Gel. Don't think I've ever seen anyone do it that way before. Pretty cool video. Look forward to seeing more on this. ...and since I have your attention... Its funny that you did another .22 test, because I was thinking about this the other day. Many years ago, I remember reading a stat that said that a snub nose revolver will usually yield about 80% of a cartridges listed velocity. Velocity listed on the box of .22 ammo is for rifles. Velocity from a rifle is about 1.5 times that of the same cartridge fired from a handgun. The CCI Quiet round lists its velocity at 710 f/s. Given the above logic, "normal" handgun velocity should be about 475 f/s, but only just under 380 f/s from a snubbie. The bullet weighs 40 grains. At that velocity, it should be making approx. 12 3/4 ft./lbs. of ME. ...being that weak, I wonder if one could catch that bullet with a baseball mitt? Please feel free to take that one and run with it. Chat at cha L8R. =)
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have been planning on doing the slices for years now, because as you said, nobody does it. So hopefully that'll be a plus to my channel. But anyway, run with it? Alright. Well, 12ft-lbs is more energy than a 10 pump pellet gun has, so I'm gonna go with it will absolutely shoot right through the baseball glove, because a 10 pump definately would. But I would also like to add, that the velocity should be even higer than what you calculated. The reason a rifle gets higher velocity than a pistol, as I'm sure you're aware, is because the longer barrel burns more of the gun powder before it blasts out the end of the barrel, resulting in more pressure/propulsion; a pistol barrel wastes a lot of this. Well with these quiet rounds, there is far less gunpowder in them. So there is less to burn before the bullet exits the barrel, meaning it doesn't need as long of a barrel to reach maximum velocity. Also, the quiet bullet is traveling slower, which gives more time for the powder to be burnt before it exits the barrel, just like a longer barrel does. So you have less powder *and* more time to burn it with the quiets, so you won't lose nearly as much velocity to a shorter barrel with these as you would with a standard round. The same is true for heavier rounds in an identical caliber comparison, because the heavier round is in the barrel ever so slightly longer due to the slightly lower velocity, therefore burning more of the powder before it exits. Because of this, heavier bullets lose less velocity when going from a long barrel to a short barrel than a lighter bullet does. Science!

This may be way off in left field, but a round that should bounce off of you is small birdshot like #8 or #9 at 100 yards or beyond. Or maybe Aguila Colibri or a 10 pump pellet gun at the same distance; the Colibri is only a 20gr bullet at 400-500fps. Even then I'm not 100% sure. Would make for an interesting video!
@DeanMk1
@DeanMk1 3 жыл бұрын
@@BuckeyeBallistics Yeah, maybe with the Colibri. That's about as weak as it gets with a .22. I seem to remember now, shooting a neighbor's Daisy pump (880, I think it was) at my baseball mitt and none of the BB's penetrated. Distance wasn't far. Maybe 20-30 feet and I don't think I pumped it up much. Too long ago to remember details. If you still wanna do that test, go for it. I think it would make for a cool video, too.
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the bb's would have bounced off, but a pellet would not have I don't think. I used to have an 880 and a Crosman 2100 and they would both shoot through quite a bit with the pellets, as the pellets carried a lot more energy and penetration due to the heavier weight. We shot the test batch I mentioned in this video with the same bb gun in the video, but with a pellet *and* bb, and the pellet traveled about an inch further into the gel than the bb. As for the bounce off video, I would do something to the effect of putting up a big sheet of plywood with styrofoam or something to that effect attatched and shoot at it. The wood is too hard and the styrofoam too soft though; got any better ideas?
