If you're looking at this as a self defense round, well, 12-18" of penetration is the FBI gold standard. So, the MiniMag came closer to the optimal pemetration, while yielding a larger wound channel, more likely to cause more bleeding and more lilely to disrupt valuable organs.

While the punch is great for speed I’d still rather have the wound cavity of the mini mag for stopping someone. Good vid though. Thanks

I think both rounds would be great at their intended purposes. The mini mag is absolutely intended to tumble like that and cause big wound chambers. The punch is all about penetration. Probably be a great small game round . I served a few tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. Witnessed and heard so many stories of people eating a few 5.56 rounds and not going down because like the punch they are a small round traveling fast that poke little holes. Obviously like with most rounds shot placement is key. Hunting the punch is the way to go. Self defense in a close quarters environment I’d take the mini mag. I definitely don’t want that thing tumbling around in me!!! Nice video though! Very entertaining!!!

For a .22, the Mini-Mag is more than adequate. They're both good rounds.

It seems the chrono is responding quicker with the new positioning. The microphone is perfect. Yes the color is a little washed out especially with a brighter background, like when you showed the close up of the wound channels with the sun behind it. The CCI wound channels are real nice and the Ruger Charger is a cool looking gun. Looks like it would be fun to shoot.

Hey man,👋 recovering from hernia surgery here, so I am watching a lot of KZfaq, reaching back in history today.👍 I have never looked at those Ruger 22 Chargers... Very interesting little pistol, I might have to pick one up. I have had a Ruger 10/22 for decades and had recently been considering putting it in a chassis system... But I think I like the idea of the braced Charger even more, plus it has a threaded barrel already.😁 While I do NOT carry 22lr for personal defense, when I walk the dog in the woods, I do carry a Ruger SR22, usually with CCI Mini-Mag, but really anything would work. I keep it because it works in all tools I have.🤷‍♂I carry it mainly in case I encounter skunks or other less than savory critters I don't want the dog to fool with. I figure I'll save the 10mm $$ for Sasquatch.🤣

I only discovered your channel a couple of months ago, but I've watched a bunch of your videos since, primarily the ones about the Punch .22lr (although I have checked out some of your 9mm offerings and ammo runs as well). Don't know why I held off before, but I just now subscribed to your channel. You've 'bout made a believer out of this Texas boy. From what I can tell, the Punch consistently creates a nice wound channel and reigns supreme on penetration. Oh, and I've since checked out other KZfaqrs posting about the Punch, but IMO your videos are the best.

Another great test. It probably won't make a big difference with non-expanding bullets but it would probably be good to see you throw a few layers of denim in front of that gel 🙂👍

Old fart here...Been using MiniMag 40 gr. for years shooting pigs @ 60-70 yards using my old Remington 950 that my grandfather got me for birthday (used) when I was 10. I'm in my 70s now. I used for shoot feral goats before pigs were a real problem. Used Remington Shorts to get geese, hares, red wing blackbirds and doves. The Reminton shoots EVERYTHING including rat shot, in any mix you want. To shoot pigs, I tap off two rounds in 'way under 1/2 second, and sometimes three. No pig has gone more than 5-6 feet before dropping, most of the time they drop right when they're hit. A few years ago, I bought 5 packs of the mini mags in 1600 rounds per ammo box looking container and have thousands of rounds left. For medical reasons, I didn't shoot pigs last year, so I'm looking forward to this year. I did buy a few boxes of the Punches, but so far they haven't really impressed me too much and not quite as accurate as the CCIs, but I will try them out. If they're equal to the CCIs, I'll still use the MiniMags as I still have boat load of them and they're approx. twice the price of the CCIs. I'll let you know how they work on something other than a gel block....

I don't know how federal haven't sponsored you yet... you have proven they are by far one of the best ones out there. The mini mags did better then a good amount of them other ones.

Ive always had good luck with the "gopro" setting for color. The cameras quite smart. Also if you film at 240 slow mo you'll have to process it different but if you can learn to process it you can slow that thing down where your slow mo jelly test would really pop. If you cant get the 240 to process the 120 settling works fine. Smooth slow motion.

Camera and microphone good, gotta love those mini mags. I usually use the 36gr HP's, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't penetrate like those 40gr did. Take a file to one of those 40gr mini mags, flatten the tip, and try the jell... might be interesting. Have fun!

Nice video. You have seen a meat target on another channel. What about doing a meat target with bones, etc. and see if this round would overpenetrate in a pistol. I know some people carry a .22 lr for self defense for various reasons. I just wonder would the punch go through a person and maybe still have enough force to injure another. Maybe do something with the jelly test to simulate clothing or maybe someone else has ideas.

The minimags have proven “reliable” in my AA 22lr conversion slide. They’re so consistent. I’ve never even seen a box of this newer federal punch stuff in person, so I’m curious.

You can hear the difference between them on the velocity test. I always heard that you could get hit with a 22 in the thumb and come out your toe. I’d still like to see some of the super x 1280 40 gr . Enjoyed the video Tools.

Funny I just got back from Wally World and picked up a box of 40gr mini mags and a box of 36gr hollow point mini mags for $8.26 a box 100rd jewel cases, couldnt pass it up! may have to file them down to a flatnose to penetrate more lol! Too bad you dont have some of the 36gr hp mini mags, I think theyre better! and I have never tried the cci velocitors which are rated faster! My Rossi LOVES those 36gr min mags very accurate! I have stocked up on them! Video and sound is great on my end! Sweet! Jelly Bowl play offs! haha! have a good one brother! good stuff

I was not surprised at how far the 40 cci did from watching other videos and seeing them exit a 16 inch block also the wound cavity was about what I expected also the:36 grain hollow points won’t go as far or make as big a wound channel for some reason they just don’t expand. I’m down to about 8 or 9 boxes of cci and I refuse to shoot it but I will say that the accuracy is pretty good. I’m going to shoot about 6 different types of.22 in my rifle for a accuracy test only no one will have to suffer watching me. As I expected the Punch kicked butt and I don’t think I have ever shot a.22 that will go as hard as the punch and one day I will find some of them and then I can see for myself

Those Mini Mags probably went out the side of that jelly because they are doing what a typical .22 does which is ricochet and bounce off of stuff nonetheless another great test!

I read the comments and everyone makes good points. But for a defensive rnd in 22lr I think penetration may be most important. Gel isn't a rib bone or a thick nylon jacket. I buy both when I see a deal.

Great quality for my 68 year old eyes & ears to see and hear clearly. I too would like to see a couple of layers of denim in the same test. Mini mag would have to be my choice if I couldn’t get stingers.

18in penetration ain’t no slouch but Punch is still KING. I would use the mini mag on varmits and small game. Just a little bit more color. Sound is perfect. Thank You for another great video Tools. Keep em coming.

Mic is perfect but color seems to be a bit washed out, I noticed the new mic was picking up the echo after the shot was fired. I have to wonder if its the finish on the punch achieving the penetration in the gel? pure lead is very porous and a lot of resistance, most copper washed projectiles are smoother yet a little on the porous side, the punch looks to be Nickle plated and may have a slicker surface ? I think Winchester has a Nickle plated 22lr (silvertip) they are 37 grain if you can find them. not sure if anyone else has the Nickle plated 22lr?

Ive been wanting to fire those federal punch 22lr, but can't find any here in the Chicago area.

Audio is much better. Video is better but I imagine it will take some tweaking to get it right. Still much better than former setup. Never done You Tube vids but I'm sure you spend a lot on equipment, ammo, tools etc. Federal Punch is superior in penetration. Appreciate your vids👍

I'm very impressed with the Mini Mag it put some hurt on the gel. I'm gonna get some of those bullets while I can. I have been trying to purchase the Punch but those rascals are hard to find.

The audio sounds real nice Tools...I like it. When I get some extra money I am gonna make the jump to the Rode wireless. I would definitely appreciate the freedom of movement.

If those mini mags are tumbling like that it would make a nasty little home defense rifle setup. I guess the velocity and round nose of the mini mag causes it to yaw. Nice little round but nothing yet beating out that punch!
