I agree. I think it's in the past too for two main reasons. 1. The trailer said that they want to redevelop the city for people and pokemon, implying that this is before the present day Lumiose city which can already be viewed as such. It was in past timeline that people and Pokémon stayed away from each other. 2. A future game would be redundant. Present day Pokémon is already extremely futuristic by our standards given the ridiculous level of technology they have. Making it set in the future would just be slapping new paint on the present and adding a few bells and whistles

I made that connection too. Also, Z-A made me think of the Hoenn remakes (last/end and first/beginning). Beni and Rowan were hinted to come from Johto (which had remakes in Gen 4. There was also Karen's ancestor). So maybe we will see characters connected to Hoenn somehow.
