I had Cubase 3 SX until november last year, and I think it is very timeless software that is still better then many modern DAWs. I upgraded from Cubase 2 in like 2005, and did never feel a need to get another software until I decided to get some modern 64-bit plugins and get more into the modern standards of sound production.

Love the Cubase compressors. I just straight up call the tube and vintage comps LA2A and 1176 because that's basically what they are and they are VERY good. I've done countless A/Be against waves and other plugins and the Cubase ones sound closer to my analog gear because the coloring is there but they don't over compensate the coloring like most other plugins, making it sound like a blanket is over the track when turned on.

Lots of good stuff in this video ... again.This is a pattern !!! Dom is da man! :D You can also use the Expander included in Cubase Pro instead of the Gate. It's softer and doesn't chop off stuff under the threshold like the Gate does. And don't overlook the Channel Strip FX that's already there in the mixer for each channel for a little bread and butter shaping of the sound. It's a killer feature!

Well, I know this video is older now, but coming back into music after 17yrs we are spoiled for plugin choices (and the fairy wants to take all of your money on top of that!) It was absolutely wonderful to hear the stock compressors broken out and used on several different audio sources, and there's enough here in the box that I can be very selective and only have to worry about a handful of character compressors because all of the workhorse needs are met right here!

Haven't yet used the Vintage or the Tube in a production, but I definitely will after seeing this video. The COMpressor on other hand is in many, many of my productions alongside with some straight up hardware emulation compressors from 3rd party developers. As Dom said, it's really non-coloured compressor, but it really gets the job done. I.e. I use it for compressing material I already think has really nice character and is already warm and colourful as it is, but I just want to compress it a bit.

Hey Dom, first things first and big props for your videos. It´s always a pleasure to see how you get to the results. Most compression tutorials are for singing or rap vocals. What about vocals for radio advertising? Do you have secret tricks for loud and proud voice processing? Usually I use Izotopes Nectar 3, FabFilter proQ3 and the maag eq for some air. What about the cubase stock plugs? Greets from Munich.

Hi Dom, Great video as always, didn't realize how much of a difference the choice of compressor could make. Have you ever used or thought about using the Multiband Compressor in Cubase?
@DomSigalas
@DomSigalas 4 жыл бұрын
I certainly do! I am not a massive fan of Multiband Compression in general (I prefer dynamic eq’s) but I use Multiband Compressor when there are things that are a bit out of control on the source material. The one in Cubase is really transparent too! But I would use it with caution as wrong settings can really alter the tonal qualities of your source (like with every Multiband compressor out there). Bob Katz has an excellent views on Multiband compressors in his book Mastering Audio, if you haven’t read this already I thoroughly recommend it for sure!

Hey Rex! Yes, it’s only one filter at a time! But you can always parallel compress your signal using send effects and then blending the compressed signal in to create a very nice even tone while retaining the original dynamics :)

Hey Dom I had a question suppose I have a yamaha mx61 connected to my laptop (cubase) and I've shown cubase to use the mx61 as an audio interface(connected via USB) so whatever I play on the keyboard gets recorded as midi and to listen to my keyboard sounds I load up a separate midi channel for that keyboard Now.. If I buy a new audio interface for recording vocals and I connect it to cubase via USB will i be able to use both my keyboard and audio interface simultaneously and seamlessly? BTW - That COD T-shirt looks nice..

Hi, first time commenter but longtime viewer. Big fan of your content and I’ve learned a lot from you, so big thanks! However I have to say that I think you explain the sidechain filter incorrectly here? You say it compresses only the low end/high end if you use the filters, but that’s inaccurate since the compressor still compresses the entire audio signal. The sidechain filter only filters the detection signal which trigger the compressor. So you can set it to only compress if there’s a lot of high frequency energy for instance, but it would still compress the entire frequency range. I am sure you just misspoke when you explained it. Thanks again for the great content you put out, I just felt I had to comment on this as it might confuse others.
@DomSigalas
@DomSigalas 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this to my attention :) Yes, indeed, I was referring more to the “effect” that each filter has on the sound rather than the actual topology /schematics. This is a quite complex subject for many people so the best way is through listening and examples imo :) It works pretty much like most hardware compressors that have a HPF filter SC. If there’s something to keep from what I said is that you “focusing” is a very important part of what it does. You got sibilants? Go with a high pass. You have uncontrolled low end but mids are fine? Go low pass. Yes, it will still compress everything but since it disregards the filtered signal you can focus on the frequencies you want and the gain reduction will be determined by those! Thanks so much for the constructive comment- these conversations are really valuable to everyone I think! Thanks for watching my friend!
@Shor8bit
@Shor8bit 4 жыл бұрын
@@DomSigalas Yeah I figured what you meant, but to actually get that pinpoint compression you would need to do multiband compression. I think I might even have watched a vid from you touching on that. Thanks again for the great content and keeping us entertained and educated :)

Dom thanks for this great video comparison. Only a question about the Vintage compressor that you mention as a replication of the 1176, I feel it seems more a Neve replication, graphically speaking. I’m wromg? I like it so much, I use it specially on vocals where I’ve experimented very beautiful sound, sometimes placing two of them with only an eq in the middle of chain. I like the way the tube comp works as master bus comp. Greetings ;)

Thanks for all the great videos. Question: When compressing drums, when you want it to sound natural, would you compress the cymbals separately from the rest? I know you can go to the extent of processing each drum individually but what is the next step up from compressing everything in one compressor?
@Am6-9
@Am6-9 4 жыл бұрын
John2009R I think that very much depends on the source. If you have drums from a very good (=even) drummer,and it’s a jazz track, you would not use much compression on single tracks, if any at all. If it’s a rock drum from a “bad” drummer, you might need to compress the heck out of it. On drum tracks from VSTis like EZdrummer or Addictive drums, you might not need single track compression either. Except of course to add color and movement. IMHO there’s no definitive answer.
@DomSigalas
@DomSigalas 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, it depends SO much on the source material! For drums, I always tend to compress individual elements first. Kick and snare for sure. I also do parallel processing on snares and kicks. Then for the drums bus, it depends : 90% of the times I will have a nice bus compressor (API, SSL style most likely) and sometimes if I want this big, roomy hard rock sound, I will parallel the master bus as well with e.g. the Vintage Compressor to get that pumping effect. But there is NO right or wrong for sure! That’s the fun of it:)

Go to the mixing console (hit F3) and at the top there is a button that says Link - just click it to unlink ;)

@@DomSigalas thanks for the feedback. The link button was on, I switched it of but when I select 1 element, for example my parallel vocal track/element in project window the it still selects all channels. Don't no how this happen when in another project this does not happen and everything works normal. I'm very new to cubase only started a couple of months ago. Love it though...

@@DomSigalas if I select a single track on the side it only selects one at a time which is correct, but if I select an element it selects all elements.

@@DomSigalas I apologize. It is called events. Not elements. When I select one event, all events in project window is selected automatically.

@@DomSigalas Hi, I think I found my mistake. I rendered in place the track as one after I worked on lead vocals I rendered the event to use as parralel compression and duplicated from there do use as doubler tracks. Thight might be. Because I'm working on different project now and saw that I can render events as different and don't have the issue anymore. Your thoughts?

if the first thing you do on the tube compressor is to set the mix to 100, why don’t you save that as the default preset? :) Another thing to do for a default preset would be cranking the input (and reducing the output) because the cubase compressors seem to be configured for very high levels and not the usual 0VU=-18dB like most analog emulations.

Very good point! Ties nicely with what I am doing with the Compressor plugin which I have set for sidechain settings as a default preset. The answer is : I don’t know! I guess it’s just one little setting and sometimes I like the parallel effect (or I might have been lazy on this one ) :)

The old graphics in Cubase 8.5 look so much better. These look like gaudy cartoons for kids.
