Episode #236 : Boat Projects : reNewable Galley
Hello Friends,
On this episode I introduced you guys to my new all electric galley! I up cycled my old alcohol stove and converted it into a super modern induction range / convection oven. I am very excited to be able to have all of my cooking fuel be renewable!
I will be doing a follow up video soon when I am done documenting the power usage of the first week.

This is a fantastic way to get rid of Liquid Fuel. Its also a cost efficient one considering the price of DA atm. I was thinking it was time to go Propane but I just didn't feel safe and that can be a hassle when out of the States. This will definitely be my next upgrade to my Boat. Ty James for sharing all the hard work.

you might want to keep a a spare electrical line to replace that moving one. metal fatigue will happen to the strains in the cord over time from the swinging. i'd suggest finding a way to keep the stove from swinging while it isn't in use and to occasionally feel the cord that has been bending to see if it is warm. if it is warm, you will need to replace that cord with your spare. to not replace it means it might short well enough to start a fire in your boat. there are also chain sheaths you can attach to electrical wires that move often that will spread out the bending location of a wire across more of the wire making that wire last longer. this is something talked about in the 3d printing world quite a bit because the gantry of the 3d printer is always moving and there needs to be electricity to power the hot end and the parts cooling fan as well as a motor if it is a direct drive 3d printer. thats a bunch of wires that can metal fatigue into creating a house fire.

Cool setup! Can you run the stove and the oven together, and how many amps would it draw? What would be the first thing to trip if there were too much current? A fuse, or the inverter?

I'm building a combination induction cooktop & microwave/air-fryer/convection-oven to hang on my existing gimbles. My problem was that the old propane range/stove wouldn't fit through any hatch on the boat. I had to disassemble it. So my new design will be modular, screwed together in the boat.

Looks great. The ONLY thing I might have done different is to terminate the power line coming from the inverter to the back of the oven cabinet as a fixed female receptacle. That way all the moment would be on a short and easily replaceable line that plugs into that.

Awesome video! I'm really looking forward to seeing more details on the average power consumption and battery levels in different sun/cooking scenarios (cooking frequently on sunny days, cooking less frequently on cloudy days, etc.). In theory you could cook large meals on sunny days, giving you leftovers to have on cloudy days without draining your batteries. Based on the math, your total battery bank is 12v * 400Ah = 4800Wh. Using a stovetop at 1500w for 15 mins (1/4 of an hour) utilizes about 375Wh. So you'd only be running your battery down about 8% for each 15 min cooking session (plus any losses in power conversion). On a fully sunny day, you'll probably get about 330W out of a 400W array, so you'd only need a little over an hour of solar (to generate 375Wh) to make up for that 15 min cooking session. Not too bad!

Fwiw you can seat a rivnut using a bolt and a spacer and a nut. I don't use the rivnut threads to seat it, because it is potentially hard on the threads. Instead I use the bolt threads with a nut pushing on the spacer/pullingon the rivnut. Quick and small so rivnut can be installed in tight quarters, also inexpensive and always available. Nice upcycle on the stove, looks decent and certainly nicer than new crap.

For your battery setup make sure all the wires coming to and from the batteries are the same length. example if you are connecting 3 batteries and have a main wire. all the smaller wires that connect the main wire ti the batteries are the same length. the reason for this is to even the load of the batteries which makes them last longer and wear evenly.

I appreciate this video as well as sv ramble on’s (great channel also). I just bought a Westsail 32 and she’s got no equipment so I have a blank slate. I want all my systems dead simple so I’m was going to go with a used Origo Alcohol stove but I’m toying with an induction hot plate. My hope is a 200 amp Lifepo4 and 200 watts solar would take care of a hot plate and minimal other power needs? I only cook one big pot of coffee and one meal a day so frankly I could get by with a camp stove but I’m paranoid about propane/butane small bottle systems. Keep on keepin’n on James, fair winds!

400W solar and i would assume the oven is atleast 2000W and same for induction when all hot plates are on. Lets say you heat chicken in the oven, potatoes and sauce. Potatoes takes 40-60 minuts to cook chicken is 45 and sauce 10. Stove top would consume around 1200W and the oven 1500W. That is 2700W. That is 7 hours of charging at the optimal sun position. Im sorry. But i cannot see this would be possible without addional charging. Or have to get used to cold food. 2 out of 3 days.
