IMO Mad Max is one of those few franchises where none of the films suck and what makes them special is how each installment is so different from other ones.

The first two are my favourites. First saw them on Betamax in 1984, and became an instant fan. I remember being excited for the third film in 1985 - I didn't see it at the cinema, but did buy the official movie magazine and the novelisation (along with the reissues for MAD MAX & MAD MAX 2). That same year, MAD MAX 2 premiered on television in South Australia, on Channel 10. I taped it, and was shocked to see all the edits (it was advertised as being uncut for television) - along with deleted scenes and alternate takes added. Great times! I finally saw THUNDERDOME in 1986, when it was first released on videotape (again, the Betamax format). I didn't like it at all. The tone (after the first two) was completely wrong, and far too much money was thrown at the production. The biggest problem for me was, all the bloody kids, and the villains were very weak. I believe Byron Kennedy's death badly affected the production. I don't think George Miller's heart was in it. The production should never have gone ahead, imo. I dislike the new MAD MAX films. They are so far divorced from the first two, as to be an almost completely different thing (sh*tty reboot). It doesn't help that Gibson is no longer playing the part. Here's my ranking: 1) MAD MAX 2 2) MAD MAX 3) The other films are dead to me.
