Yeah Jane's an asshole. If I were the stepwife I would've left them behind so quick. No way I'd be able to trust the spawn of satan after that. Maybe she (Linda?) was on to something calling her strange. Normally kids would throw a tantrum and outright show that they hate their stepmom, not pretend to like her but then behind her back make her go through the most traumatic event of their life.
@rjs34933 жыл бұрын
I think I played this game 4-5 times before I started to get what was going on at the end 😂 [Spoilers] . . Nancy was originally asked to go to Blackmoore because she used to be friends with Linda, and linda's mother was super worried about her. Jane trying to turn her step mother into a werewolf is unrelated to the metorite and just related to Jane being a terrifying twelve year old who is sad about her parents divorce - unfortunately because she used the legend of the Blackmoore beast to try and scare away Linda, Nancy's case got wrapped up in the whole "family secret" in order to prove that Linda wasn't REALLY turning into a werewolf There is a lot of story hidden in little sound bites and throwaway/optional dialogue lines! The metorite was originally found by Randulf the Red, and shortly after he found it he started becoming super successful at military strategy - eventually proving himself so helpful to the king that he was given the land Blackmoore Manor was built on as a gift. He's also the one who had a son who was a peaceful farmer type, uninterested in joining the military or continuing that legacy - but the grandson (Milo) was just as good at battle strategy as Randulf so a conspiracy started that the meteorite gave every other Penvellyn generation special powers. Because of this, every other generation was supposed to be "inducted" into the family secret around the age of twelve or so. This means that each Penvellyn was keeping the meteorite a secret and telling their eldest grandchild about it - so the last 'initiate' was Alan - Mrs. Drake's brother/Janes grandfather/Hugo's father/the man who designed the ghost hunt- making Jane (about 12 years old) the next in line to learn about and keep the metorite a secret. Unfortunately Alan died when Jane was super young, which is where Ethel's job becomes relevant. 500 years before the events of the game, Charles Penvellyn conscripts a Bosiny (one of Ethel's ancestors) into the service of tutoring Penvellyn children and being sort-of in the know about the family secret in order to keep the link going in case a grandparent is not around to induct the next twelve year old. (I think it was implied that the original Bosiny was blackmailed into it??) But in any case the Bosiny family has been somehow convinced to keep this up for 500 years and now Ethel is mid way through the process of showing Jane how to access the secret meteorite and design a puzzle to hide it - the history lessons and family tree are supposed to give her context for why "just a stupid rock" is an important family treasure. This is also why Ethel is weird about nancy and threatens her - nancy being able to solve these puzzles is a direct threat to like. 500 plus years of work both families have done to make sure ONLY the correct Penvellyn Heirs can find out about the magic space rock. The meteorite was hidden by Randulf and Milo because they believed that if they lost it they would lose their new-found wealth and status and 500 years later it seems to be that it's more tradition than anything else keeping it hidden. Although the secrecy is still great for the family - for example they have people trying to write books about them because of the mystery surrounding their family and I imagine they would get some royalties, publicity, or other income from Nigel's book being published, so in a roundabout way the metorite is still protecting the Penvellyn family's wealth and status ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What's with Ethel tho? She was definitely shady and a descentend of the Wich that was burned (was an adopted penvellyn)... I thought she was plotting to get the treasure for herself! 🤷
@gregputnam72433 жыл бұрын
No So Ethel is a Bossiny and if you remember from last episode, the Bossiny family was tasked in instructing each heir to the Penvellyn Treasure. This generation is Jane and Ethel is her tutor (for school) like the Aunt and Step-mother believe but also in solving the puzzles of the Manor from previous generations. The problem with this generation is Jane is the one who was suggesting to her Step-Mother that she was turning into the Beast of Blackmoor Manor: Jane had the Step-Mother read a book on Werewolves, Jane snuck into her room and put the note with the curse on it, and she has been manipulating her with the food choices and I think she even put hair growing lotion in her mother's lotion so that her arm hair would grow exceptionally fast. In all this time, Ethel has been trying to tutor Jane on the family history in hopes of teaching about each puzzle belonging to the family members so that Jane herself can discover the Treasure and add to its protection. Jane does not see it as that way though because she wants her father to get back with her mother and not the Step-Mother. Jane is using the puzzles (sounds throughout the house) and Suggestion to make the Step-Mother believe she is going insane and/ or turning into the Beast of Blackmoor.
@gregputnam72433 жыл бұрын
If anything, Ethel sees Nancy as a threat because Nancy is not an heir to the Penvellyn family so she is ruining the invitation process for Jane by discovering the secrets to the Manor.

The way I’d divorce that dude after this. Better yet not even marry him. It’s so weird to me that a dude with a kid just marries someone whilst not ensuring that his partner and his child are getting along and have some bonding going on. Like that dude just marries her, then dumps his daughter who she barely knows onto her, to then go on his obligatory business trip. “Here sweetie, that’s your new mom. Well then I’m on my way, bye”. Like he married the woman just for her to be reduced to being a mother for the kid whilst he’s away. And then he didn’t even do the minimum of bringing them close/ creating opportunities for them to get to know each other, form a deeper connection etc. And yes that is his responsibility, as the one that is the reason those two even know each other and are bond to each other. Edit: the fact alone that she was gaslit and manipulated to the point of her thinking she’s going crazy in this grand scale just shows that there is a lot to do. That there is a disconnect between the two of them but also the dad and his daughter!! Yikes, that wasn’t one of those deathly antagonists but it was scary nonetheless with how a little child went to this length

Please do the Haunting of Castle Malloy next! It's one of my favourites, and I'm kinda curious what Seán would make of it too. The one that came out right after this one, Secret of the Old Clock, is the one I'd recommend after that one. It's another favourite of mine, mainly cause of some of the gameplay mechanics, and also cause they mixed it up by setting it in the era of the books. It's also one of the few actually based on one of the Nancy Drew books as well, which was fun. It's so different than the rest of the games but it's super fun and is a sort of breath of fresh air in the midst of the rest of this era of the games which were fairly formulaic (though in no way bad). So yeah, Haunting of Castle Malloy, followed by Secret of the Old Clock are the next two I'd love to see you play through most!
