Having a nice starter package is always a nice touch. In "all in one box" setups the speakers will be the biggest compromise. The IO amp is an example of where they spent the money on the amp. It is class A/B and not class D. High tech bells and whistles don't always age well. So in this case you get a simple high quality starter amp that is a keeper. Back in the eighties I was told many times that 20 watts per channel will drive just about anything. Most people use a couple of watts or less for most of their listening. Take a pair of Klipsch La Scalas with an spl rating of 105dB at 1 Watt. To add 3dB you have to double your wattage. So at four watts you are at 111dB... about the same level as being in the crowd at a rock concert. At 16 watts you are at 117dB. If you want more features the Rotel A11 tribute would be a comparable.

@@andrewrobinsonreviews Loved your review and thank you Kristi for securing this system! I believe this could be a gateway drug into vinyl and maybe smart marketing for REGA to move up their chain. But I agree, as separates it’s easily beat - perhaps the Brio and P3 with Klipsch or Polk Audio makes more sense. I’ll say in the end perhaps you need to be a bit higher up their chain to appreciate the strong support some of your viewers may have for the brand. Please go up their line like Kristi said at the end with their other amps and vinyl players - maybe a good follow up. Have a great Sunday and thank you for a great review!

Thanks for the review! I bought the IO a year ago and running it in my office system with a pair of Falcon Q7 mini monitors and a FiiO dap as source and I’m really enjoying it. One of my main reasons for buying the IO was the fact that it is built in England and I will happily pay a bit more or loose some features to support Rega in that.

To be fair to Rega, I think it's not fair to compare an Integrated amp to a Stereo receiver and say that the features are lacking. The focus shouldn't be on features alone. You enjoyed the sound quality, why not compare the amp to other integrated amps? Rega's build quality is higher than a lot of the mentioned competitors. Look inside the chassis. Also, the amps come with a lifetime warranty, unheard of in the industry.

My first stereo system was a Sony box system. It came with a receiver containing a record player and cassette deck and 2 2-way speakers. I loved this system, was easy to connect, speaker wires and antennas. It was easy to record from the radio and phono because all the connections were internal. The speakers were a good size and a had very good sound. Being put in a bedroom. having one unit house everything made it easy.

Another fair and highly credible review with careful thought given to how this less-than-competitive system (on a cost vs feature basis) can fit the needs of some. I especially liked the discussion about using a couple of different alternative speakers and integrated amps. Your review of the speakers was also particularly useful because you both (as you always do) called it like you heard it. On a side note, I particularly like it when you mention specific tracks that you listen to in your evaluations because it is one of the ways I expand my musical exploration of new (to me) artists and genres. Thanks to you both for another great review.

These speakers are pretty much for kids to play with in their rooms. Rega makes great products. I have a Rega Elex-R amp paired with ATC SCM7s speakers (the smaller studio like monitors) in my music room and man does the Rega make them shine. The strength of Rega is their phono stage. So if you're a minimalist and love to play vinyl and prefer an all analog integrated amplifier with no digital circuit that will usually affect analogue performance, you'll love Rega products.

I'm not in the market anymore for an audio setup as I've "completed" mine already but I really like the way your reviews are setup with Kristi's takes. It's a more practical approach that basically comes down to, "do we like it or not" and then expounds on that. Regarding the review, i do think Rega is more a turntable company than an electronics company so they do have fairly good turntables for the price but their electronics are a bit lacking. The P1 is a pretty good "starter" turntable and plenty of people would be happy with it as is.

Andrew and Kristi, another great video. I would love for you to review a higher end Rega product. I have been running a Rega Elix-R and P6 turntable in my main system for over 2 years now and it really is a good combination for vinyl. Rega amps aren't everyone's cup of tea. The price is high for not a lot of frills, and there are no tone controls to tailor the sound to a room, but what you do get with the Elix-R is a great amp paired with really solid MM phono stage. I have read that they pair really well with the Wharfdale Linton's.

I really enjoyed your review - would absolutely love to see and hear your take on the Rega Brio! Not very many video reviews of this one and it's been around for years; very surprising. I know I'm in the minority here but I actually love the bare bones aesthetic of their products. Completely agree - they should have just bundled (and keep their focus on) the turntable with the amp (and ditch the speakers) and price accordingly. What a weird marketing decision!

Exactly a year ago (Labor Day weekend 22) we rented a beach house and they had a turntable setup. It was a $100 AT table, but connected to a Rega Brio amp through Rega RS5 speakers. Listening to this system caused me to completely scrap my vinyl system and start over. The first step was a Rega Planar 6, and more recently found a used pair of the RS5 speakers to replace my B&O BeoLab 8000s, which allowed (and required) me to bring out my trusty Jolida tube integrated amp. I'm about to order the Rega Aria phono preamp. I've been blown away by all the Rega components I've heard, though admittedly I've not heard those speakers, and don't doubt they're a little disappointing. Hopefully Rega can get you some of their better components to review. I noticed they just released a new speaker recently.

it is around 1400USD for the system here in Europe. i have only the turntable which is superb for the price 350USD (we cannot get orbit or fluance, uturn here for the same reasons, import tax, shipping etc) and rega is better option than pro-ject. As for IO goes, it cost 540USD here. The prices are still higher than few years back when UK were in EU. Now we have to pay a little extra too.

Hi Andrew, really appreciating the honest and comprehensive nature of your reviews. As I am seeking to build a hifi system for my London flat in a few weeks, the compact nature of the Rega System had initially caught my eye. I found your video on hifi set ups for small spaces very useful and I like how you stress the importance of good design for any system to make one more prone to enjoying their experience of spinning vinyl. I was wondering whether you could do a review of the Boston-made plus record player all-in-one system from +Audio to compare it with your previous experience of using the Andover model one. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on the sound experience of the stylish La Boite Concept LX turntable. Keep up the great work!

Excellent review as always! I think the idea of hi-fi in a box is a good one in general as long as they don’t cut corners on individual pieces which tends to happen. This was very interesting. Based in Europe I have this brand perception wrt REGA of „can do no wrong“. The SYSTEM ONE has had quite a number of very positive reviews in Hi-Fi magazines, e.g. here in Germany. When you read WHAT Hi-Fi from the UK you could think they make the best amplifiers at any price point. Audiophiles love them for their analogue touch and focus on essentials, meaning sound over features. They‘ve recently been critized a lot for putting a DAC into one of their amps for the first time (Elicit MK5 at about 2,500 EUR) The io, btw is 549 EUR. At he US price I fully understand you‘d expect more features.

I just got a Rega Planar 2 to replace an old AT-LP60. Its a good turntable, I think the cartridge is even the same or similar to the old cheapy turntable but the turntable and tonearm itself makes a big difference, it clears up the sound and produces a lot of resolution (vs the old plastic bodied, light platted, automatic tonarm of the LP60). I'm plugged into a Yamah RX-A1080 (through internal phono) feeding a pair of KLH Model 5s. Sounds great, a little better (read less harsh but just as detailed) than the internal DAC. I'm contemplating a better phono stage, to see what changes (darlington or schitt mani), but it actually sounds good as is. Rega makes nice turntables at the least, that tonarm is solid, light and has no play, tracks really well, I get not much surface noise anymore. Was looking at Planar 1, but went up to the 2 just to give myself some headroom for future cartridges, the planar 1 tonarm seems tuned mostly for that rega carbon (AT3600, which is a good cartridge no matter how cheap it is).

I really wanted a Rega IO, but I picked up a used more powerful Rega Brio and love it. They drive my Q Acoustics 3030i’s well, and have great synergy. Man, I want a Rega Elex-R. I really like how Rega stuff is made in house in their small factory in England. And they try not to outsource to cheaper suppliers/manufacturers. Rega stuff is a bit less expensive in the UK, so competition is a bit more stiff when buying at US prices. But, you get quality built products with top tier materials for the money. Rega’s new amps are starting to have built in DAC’s and headphone amps. But, I prefer the more simple integrated amps, so I can pick and choose better components to match the amps. Also, it’s nice when internal power supplies don’t have to share power to support many extra features.

Nice video, Andrew & Kristi. Thanks! I have the Rega IO (hooked up to Dali Oberon 1's on Solidsteel SS-6 stands) and I think it's a pretty amazing amp. Rega doesn't care much about built-in dacs, bluetooth, sub-out connections, or many inputs) Personally I like the clean and minimal looks and design of the IO (or other Rega amps for that matter) To me 3 inputs seems (just about) sufficient in most cases. (one can connect a TT, a CD-player and streaming device) I agree with you that the Rega Kyte speakers look horrible. (indeed like cheap, plastic, outdoor speakers, it was the same thought I had seeing them the first time!) I think most Rega speakers look pretty cheap for their money. (both now and in the past) Here in Europe (at least in the Netherlands) Rega often gets demoed with Totem speakers. These 2 brands have truly wonderful synergy! I wouldn't mind if Rega completely gave up on designing speakers (just like Naim did some years ago), and totally focus on what they're very good at, making great turntables and amps!

From the early 90s until about 3 years ago the Rega Elicit was amp was the beating heart of my hifi rig and serced me well. I also owned a Rega Planer 3 turntable, which was impressive. 3 years ago, I seriously upgraded my entire rig. Wherever I went to audition components, I took my Rega Elicit as a reference point. It easily held it’s own against amplification systems twice the price. I have to admit that I have a in built bias toward Rega. That Elicit has been replaced by a 7 times the price preamp monoblocks combo, but still sits proudly in my rack, on standby. All that having been said, I have never been overwhelmed by Rega speakers, not even their premium range.

Not keen on the Turntables (I have tried P1 and P2) but the IO is the best lower-cost amp I have ever heard. It is a tad rolled off but has a sound that is just very listenable. It can drive speakers which are theoretically far beyond its weight. I recently had the Yamaha AS-801 and Cambridge Audio AXA35. Yamaha is much less 'natural' in sound with hardish upper mids. Cambridge was very dynamic for the price but gave an overall over-warm presentation. Yes, the Rega has no add-ons. It is very basic. But UK prices make all of these items better value, especially before recent price hikes. I got the IO two years ago for £390. I know that many people like the Yamaha sound from the AS series. To me it sounded unnatural. So if you want something that sounds different from that the IO is a great bet, at least in the UK.

I'm a huge fan of Reega products. I own the Elex and the P3, both which sound awesome to me. But- and I mean this respectfully, in the US people could do better for less expense, or at least do as well. Not a value proposition for reasons outside Rega- or any UK producers control.

No problem Kristi, I watched right till the end😄 As for the question: I guess that depends. I think a one box solution is ideal for those just getting into the hobby. It’s not for me though. It’s interesting that despite those Regas presumably built to function well together, the Kytes lack synergy with the other components. And the price of those Kytes is downright egregious 😬

Once again you are honest where others fear to be. I know you don’t like disparaging comments about other reviewers in these comments, but it’s worth saying another well known reviewer gave these speakers a decent review, even though you could tell he didn’t like them. I mention it only because the contrast with your approach is notable and something you should hang onto. I think Rega (a company I love) knows they have a stinker with the kite, and they should respect any reviewer who says so.

I have the iO linked to the Node as you have in your review system and the Node has a sub out which cures the sub issue (and you can set the crossover etc) . I love the sound of the iO to my Q3050’s from Roon/Node and don’t use records/CD’s so I only need a single input. You can even train the supplied remote to operate the Node and as its shared with Rega CD players you can pause / skip the Node. The io cost me £349 in the UK so I guess that’s why it makes a lot of sense.

I think Andrew did a good job of distinguishing his impressions of each component. Sadly it seems some on this thread are taking away that the IO sucks. That’s sad because in my experience it’s one of the better sounding sub-$1k amps on the market.

Yes! I love idea of a system, complete system in a box. I am more about music than anything, I love quality in a product because the output will speak to this not unless its my kind of sound orchestration but my unboxing/ connections session is usually messy because I just want to listen to the music o plug and play is the way to go. On Kristy's point, I kind of thought not to continue with the review very early as the direction of the review was clear then already however more than loyalty to this show, I enjoy a lot of teachings from your content character, always very carefully put together and so I'd watch to the end.

I am mixed on the idea of manufactures putting together a system. On the one hand, for those who just want something good without really putting the work into it, great! But, this takes away the fun of creating and researching your own "personal" system. Plus $2000 seems a bit high to me. I put together a system for around $1700. Cambridge Audio AXR100, U-turn Orbit Plus w/ an Ortofon Blue, Monitor Audio Bronze 100's, and a Elac Sub1010. I like the versatility in my system, its sound and I truly enjoyed researching each component (i.e., watching your videos) Anyway, that is my 2 cents, for what it matters.

My first integrated amp was a Cambridage Audio AXA35, which I bought based partly on your review. This was a great starter amp and I loved the sound, but a few months back I was ready for an upgrade. After lots of research I went with the Rega IO and have had zero regrets. Since the AXA35 is analog only my entire system had been built without the need for digital inputs, so the IO was a perfect step up. I also briefly considered the Kyte speakers, but decided against them since speakers don't appear to be in Rega’s wheelhouse. I went with a pair of DALI Oberon 3s and they sound great paired with the IO. As far as sound quality, the IO is better than the AXA35 across the board. In fact, I’ve been so impressed with the Rega sound that when I’m ready to upgrade I’ll probably just keep stepping up their line. I might even look at one of their turntables.

Rega are hesitant to engage with the KZfaq platform, yet insist on leading with this stuff when they do (with other reviewers too) instead of some of their more upmarket and frankly amazing products. I for one don’t get it 🤷🏻 Try getting them to send you the Aethos and a P8 🥳 P.S. must add I have found even the entry level amps pretty awesome, I’m a big fan of the Rega electronics, including their digital sources. The amps tend to play really well at quiet levels, which ohh so so many do not do! As for subs, just use a Rel 😉

I have the previous gen RP1 Performance turntable and have had it for years. Been dead reliable and excellent all around! I need to replace the drive belt as I noticed it stretched too much and has too much slack, so it slips under load like startup from not spinning. I need to upgrade the cartridge just due to age. But overall very satisfied both with sound quality and build quality!

I bought a Rega Elicit-R amp 7-8 years ago. After a couple of years the left channel started overheating. I sent it to an authorized tech who told me the channel bias had drifted substantially. The cost of shipping and repair was prohibitive so I abandoned it. Then I switched to Schiit amplification but I've kept my RP-8 turntable with a Lyra Delos cartridge, which I love. It left me with a bad impression of Rega electronics and service.

Great review as usual. Rega was on my shortlist for a turntable, specifically the P3, but I went with ProJect instead. Rega definitely has the looks though.. that red color for the turntable they have is damn fine. And with the question: definitely. Absolute more brands should offer packages like this. It would make it a lot easier for newly introduced to this hobby to choose their starting system.

How much? My first reaction on hearing the price of the IO was that you may have skipped a line and read the price for a Brio - I'm sure you haven't, but the cost in the UK is £420ish ($511.55 inc 20% sales tax).

I have a Rega Brio 2017 supposed to sound very similar to IO. Minor buzz from the left speaker but inaudible at sitting distance. Very lively amp great in keeping rythm with good bass though a little fuzzy rather than tight. Slightly warm sounding through my Dali Menuets SE. They're great for a small room. Oh and with Rega products, you expect no features in exchange for the sound quality....

My Brio has some buzz too, but I can’t hear it at a distance. I’ve read that It’s the trade off of having a smaller half width case. And Rega might have kept some noise through the amp to maximize sound quality. I really want a Rega Elex-R, which is supposed to be a bigger better Brio with less channel noise.

Personally, I think starting off someone that’s new to hi-fi with a turntable system is doing them a huge disservice in this day and age. Better to go with something like the Powernode and a nice set of speakers. If they want to add a turntable later that’s fine, but don’t start them off that way.

Depends on your goal. If they just want to listen to random singles in the background, streaming is great. But if they want to learn how to listen and concentrate on the music, vinyl is great because it somewhat forces you to listen 20-30 minutes of the same artist. Vinyl can foster more appreciation for music, in my opinion, which will foster a great appreciation for sound quality.

I think the current GBP USD exchange rate does it a disservice. As a Brit in the US my personal opinion is the 1000gbp cost in the UK would usually equate to a 1200-1500usd price which maybe makes this a different proposition. Also as noted elsewhere the UK speaker industry may be the reason for the poor speakers....

I think the Fluance bookshelf speakers amzn.to/2ZSnahy would be a great option to go with the rest of the Rega system. At under $200 for the pair, they are a steal! The RT85 is a great TT, no doubt, but if you want a turntable that is a little easier to set up, then the P1 gets my vote - especially if this is your first record player.

I bought a speaker package deal from Klipsch (saving $600) the year that the RP series came out and went with a 6010 Marantz for an amp. Thank GOD Listenup allows full price trade backs for upgrades the first month as I had to go another 1k for the 7010 as the power requirements were substantially over my estimations (nine speakers was a deal break). That is the big one for any over all package deal; power, connectivity, and general sound. Been in the game too long to trust a manufacturer to do it all to completion particularly in A/V.

At the beginning of January, I bought a Rega p1 in Romania for 999 ron, which is 200 Euros. I thought the price was wrong, or they forgot it from their sale before the new year, but I still placed the order and yes, they delivered it. (now the price is 1599 RON = 320 Euro). I paired it with a vintage amplifier - Akai AA V1200 -130W into 8Ω, very good phono performance and a pair of vintage floor speakers Kenwood LS 94 120w, 8Ω, made in Japan, both in very good condition, for which I paid 420 euros (both). So the whole setup cost me somewhere around 620 Euros, and it sounded extremely good. Of course, I have no warranty for the amplifier and speakers. I don't think that plastic speakers are an option in 2022, the Rega P1 is definitely worth buying, the Rega IO amplifier for which I found an advertisement in the Planar package, not so much, and those plastic speakers - no way

When I read the "all in one turntable system" in the title I thought Rega had created something inspired in one of those classic one box 70s systems with an amp, a cassette player, a radio tuner and a turntable on top. My dad bought a Conion branded one in 1980. Now THAT would be sweet. If they (or anyone elese) did an amp + dac/streamer with a turntable plinth attached to it that would be the one box solution for many people. And with digital spdif inputs anyone who already owns an old CD, DVD or BluRay player could also easily spin CDs with respectable performance. Btw, I own a Rega Elex-R amp driving a pair of Dali OBERON 5 speakers and I really like the sound I get from it.
