I think one of the most powerful parts of this scene is Alan admitting his mistake to Shawn, genuinely apologizing, and not letting Shawn say it was okay. Growing up, it was very rare for me to hear an adult apologize to a kid

It's a lesson few children learn. Parents aren't always right. And fewer admit it. If only the realized how much it helped a child grow, that even in adulthood you can still be wrong, and that's alright as long as you own up to it and make it right.

Until the writers of the follow up show wrote Cory like a do*che that never reached out to Shawn in 7 years and let the relationship fall apart. I had a friend like Shawn and sure, we don't talk every day or week and our lives are in different states etc... but I am still the godfather of his first child and we still catch up from time to time. If Cody was as decent a human as he was written to be, then he would not have ignore Shawn completely for almost a decade.

My favorite thing about this episode is how Alan took responsibility for being wrong and apologized to Shawn. Not like a, "okay whatever, my bad," but a genuine apology. He always loved Shawn like a second son and just forgot for a minute. But you can feel how legitimately bad he felt for hurting him and how important it was to him that Shawn didn't walk away from that situation feeling like trash.

You can FEEL the sincerity in this scene....with Alan's fear (coming out as fury) that his son was drinking. With Cory's confession about feeling the pain of losing Topanga and trying to squelch that pain with alcohol and not wanting to be alone so he made Shawn drink with him, and ESPECIALLY with Alan's apology to Shawn. He sincerely apologized and that was felt. Its RARE that you see a grownup admit that they were wrong and apologize to a child like that.

This is where i learned what a sincere apology really is. Admitting your wrong, admitting its not ok, and just apologize. No excuses, no beating around the bush, no "buts", taking responsibility for your actions, and being ok if the other person doesnt accept it because youre the one whose wrong, not them. Alan matthews taught me that.

It's powerful when you see a grown man straight up admit he was wrong like this. One time when I was a teenager, my Dad misplaced a $100 bill. He accused me of taking it and we got into an argument. He disappeared into his room for about an hour, came back with a really sad look on his face, put his hand on my shoulder while looking me in the eyes and handed me a $100 bill, then said "I'm sorry, I was wrong. I found this while cleaning." One of the few times I've seen my Dad on the verge of tears. That example sticks with me all these years later. I've been on the edge about apologizing to someone and remembering that moment pushed me to do the right thing.

Alan Matthews, everyone. First-ballot TV dad hall of famer. Watched the show as a teen in the 90s and rewatching now along with the PMW cast, and like them, I'm so drawn to the adults in the show. Guaranteed I didn't give a hoot about the parents when I watched as a kid. God, they're so good. I don't think people realize just how good William Russ was in the show and how well he performed in this scene, particularly; there's nothing inauthentic here. And he could easily have slipped into a stock "pissed off dad" caricature. But he didn't. It takes a big man to admit he was wrong and apologize. Especially to a kid. Rusty played this with a beauty and balance that is rare in actors.

Also, everyone should have a friend as loving and protective as Shawn. His first instinct is to have Cory's back and take responsibility, in a misguided effort to protect Cory from losing his parents' respect and trust. Shawn knows he won't be in trouble because he feels he has no one to disappoint, so he'll take the brunt of Alan's anger for Cory. What a character, what a performance, what a scene overall!

Shawn was right. People don't expect much from him other than to be a screw up unlike Cory, who is the total opposite. However, that doesn't excuse Alan for stepping out of line here without giving Shawn the benefit of the doubt. Being raised by two nurturing and loving parents like the Matthews can have its uphill and downhill battles because you expect your children to do the right thing at all times, and on this occasion, Cory made a stinker. Good thing Cory cleared the air and told the truth.

Can we just talk about the quality of the acting in this scene for a moment? Because I don't think there are enough comments on it. I mean, William Russ (Alan) just really kicked some serious ass in this. He spoke like he experienced this personally in his own life, especially when he poked his finger in Ben Savage's chest. And when Ben backed into the kitchen door and it moved slightly upon contact with that look of fear in his eyes, that was enough to move anyone who watched this, along with him speaking on the reasons why he drank.

I’m a social worker and have worked with kids and families. I always explain to parents how important it is to own their behavior in front of the their kids and even apologize when it’s appropriate. There’s usually a chip on their shoulder or they have this concern it is going to undermine their authority. But I have to tell them that it doesn’t, and that it actually makes kids respect them more and feel respected themselves, which actually influences them to listen to them more. That’s how you win over “unruly” kids: you don’t keep trying to push your authority on them bc chances are everyone, even the law, has done that. You listened. And you talk TO them not AT them. It is completely possible to hold people accountable for their behavior without shaming them or trying to push guilt on them. The problem is many adults lack the patience and emotional intelligence to do so. And the result is they end up arguing with a freaking child without realizing how stupid they look. Or they end up just hitting them bc they lack the same capacity of emotional regulation as the kid themselves. So you basically have a larger child hitting a smaller one.

I've somehow never seen this show. I was recommended this clip. But the world really needs more honest men like every man in that scene, and loving mothers too for that matter.

I rewatched the series not that long ago, and I am so glad I did. It has aged like a fine wine. It had its minor flaws, such as the 90s cheese from the early seasons and Eric's character being dumbed down significantly during the later seasons. Howerver, this show could make you cry tears of laughter one minute and bawling like a baby the next. I appreciate it so much more now that I am 34. Also ,every actor on this show was phenomenal.

Eric getting dumbed down is one of the major tropes of the dumber older sibling from 80s/90s/early 2000s tv sitcoms. We saw it with Kelly Bundy in Married with Children (who was certainly two pancakes short of a stack) but still relatively normal and no where near as dumb as she was by the end of the show. Then there was Junior from My Wife and Kids, also relatively normal (albeit not the sharpest tool in the shed), but another character who became increasingly more stupid as the episodes progressed (they low key made Claire dumb too, compared to her 1st season counterpart).

This show is still amazing! It’s so realistic to real life. Alan was trying to be a good father by telling Cory and Shawn how dangerous underage drinking can be. He said some things to Shawn in anger that he didn’t mean because he was upset. It takes a big man to admit he was wrong. You can also tell that Alan meant it by the way he walked away in shame and Amy coming to her husband’s side. They both care about Shawn like a second son. Even though they might not always like Shawn they still love him and we know they’d be heartbroken if anything bad happened to him. I also think Shawn wanted to take the heat not only to protect Cory ,but because he actually wanted to be disciplined, because he never got that from his dad. He knows parents discipline their children because they care and he knew if the Matthews were disciplining Cory and him that they truly cared about him. I’m glad I grew up watching shows like this, Family Mattters, Fresh Prince and Roseanne! All great shows

Grew up watching this show, only now seeing this clip, did I just realize, how absolutely spot on Rider Strongs acting is when Corey’s dad blames him, just the most cold gutted empty stare with slight blinking, not much more can convey judging someone based on past mistakes, and just having to sit there and take someone telling you you’re the problem to my family, betrayal from a father figure he thought he could trust, god that hits hard.

This is adulthood in a nutshell. We make mistakes. Everyone does. Some big some small. But in moments we can say things that felt right and true in the moment and turned out to be completely off the mark. Corey didn't think it was cool, or going to get him a new girl. He wanted the pain to stop. Shawn wanted to help his friend brother, and keep an eye on him. Alan could never envision his son drinking and excuses and said terrible things. And if his wofe had not calmed him it would of been worse. And he owned it. A lot of people love to movk this show today. But it is scenes like this that show just how good it was

I see what you mean but I think it goes the opposite direction in that he still looks at Corey as the baby when Corey is older than Eric was at the start of the show at that point. Not to mention Shawn has gotten Corey into some dumb situations prior.

Alan apologized to Shawn for taking his anger out on him, not for his opinion of him. This is a lesson to dig into. Whwn Someone's opinion of you holds more weight than your opinion of yourself that's when you develop an unstable self image. Healthy Shawn would accept that Alan thinks poorly of him, and accept the apology because it was genuine and Alan was wrong. Continue to enjoy his friendship with Cory and soak up the lessons and values of a safe 2 parent household. But this takes vulnerability, and some of yall aint ready for that, so be offended and get nothing.
@propogandalf

@@SimplyaLady92I don't think Alam genuinely thinks poorly of Shawn. He just knows that he sometimes gets into things that "good boys" shouldn't. Later in the series he even offers to adopt Shawn and Shawn refused because he already felt like part of the family but also didn't want to deny his biological family.
