Ehh…manipulation is generally solely self-serving. Evocation for mutual support fits the bill more here, it’s just not landing since that not Alan’s value system. He likes suffering because he views that as having given him his merit. Both are just clumsy men with different levels of advocation…one’s trying to lead off a childhood of dedication to a woman, the other’s leading off of a manhood where he got used to not wanting people to lean in on influencing him through his military service… It was just too simplified.

@@dragon22214 You don't get that Cory was in the wrong. Just because Alan's his father doesn't mean he has to defend him all his life because he can't. Every good father should have their child's back till they die. But that does not mean defending them until they die, that means supporting them and their decisions even though you might disagree with some of them. Cory and Topanga were the ones to make that dumb ass decision to get married at a young age in college. They told him it was a mistake and it would be very difficult and they were right. Then Cory had the nerve to say "WELL THEN WHAT GOOD ARE YOU!" And then he said "all you had to say was no". Then left like he was right and ended the conversation. First of all he did say no multiple times starting with when they told him they were getting married. The whole damn show is about Cory and his friends making dumb ass decisions then learning from them and this was Cory's dumbest one.

I 100% agree with Alan. Cory and Topanga were NOT drowning. Cory says they were living in an awful dorm. It STILL is a roof over your head, next. The washing machine is broken. You have a bathtub until you can have money to PAY to get it fixed what else have you got? Something coming out of the sink that looks like soup. Fix it and see what the problem is, that it? See, drowning means they have NO HOME. No water, and no roof to shield them from the rain and cold. Cory, just wanted Topanga to have everything taken care of AFTER the honeymoon.

There were hints in the earlier seasons that Cory's parents (particularly Alan) kind of spoiled him and his siblings. There was an episode when Cory signed on to paint a fence, did a terrible job, and Dad fixed it for him. In another episode Alan snuck Morgan a present on one of the brothers' birthdays so she wouldn't feel left out. Then there was the time Eric quite his job at Dad's store to be a "model", and when that didn't work out, came crawling back saying, "You remember when I had a bad roll in Monopoly, and you'd call it a missroll and let me roll again? This is one of those scenes you don’t fully appreciate until your older and actually live out on your own and start your life. As a kid, like maybe 8 or 9 I remember thinking “man that sucks his dad is soo mean and hard”, but as I got older and experienced living in an apartment in college and now out myself, you truly appreciate it and just wanting to yell at Corey and saying “this is life you idiot, you can’t keep going back to your parents for every issue”; ultimately this is the best scene of the whole series.

“Then what good are you?!” A father that is good enough to show his son what accountability is. People tend to dismiss how much value there is in struggle. When we go through rough times we condition ourselves to handle things better the next time, and the next time after that and then the next. The lessons we instill in ourselves are so valuable and it’s hard to realize it when we are going through the difficult times. Corey’s dad was being a great father here by reminding him of the choice that HE chose to make and what came with that choice. Let’s not also forget the strong relationship Corey and Topanga are forming by living through the struggle together - if they can survive these years they will be better prepared when children come. This clip should be shown to every young person before they make a big choice in life
@ShaolinShadowStroke
@ShaolinShadowStroke Жыл бұрын
I couldn't have said it better myself. I couldn't believe he had the chutzpah to say something so immature and disrespectful. He didn't think about all time time and effort his parents put into his upbringing. All those years of rules, curfew, chores, and discipline from preschool to age 18 are designed to prepare young people for a world filled with CONSEQUENCES for any given action. If Corey were a real person, he'd strike me as someone who went through the same things most children go through--breaking rules, getting grounded, doing chores, taking out the trash, etc.--but didn't quite learn the intended lesson. That's like people who breeze through college but only study enough to pass, and end up learning nothing. Sadly, too many young people forget the harsh lessons about life their parents tried to teach them, and only remember the times their parents bailed them out of a jam. Which leads to scenes like this one. the Millennials are dealing with this problem in spades. Twenty-to-thirty-something-year-old children most of them are.

People choose to go to college and parents pay for it and pay for everything and fully support the child. Teaching responsibility doesn't start only when someone gets married as if that's the worst thing he could have done. He should have had a job at 16 or younger and then maybe he would have been equipped to make wise decisions. That's why people wait to get married now yet rush head long into mounds of debt, no long term planning.

What’s so funny is when my wife (back when she was my girlfriend) and I moved in to together, our first apartment was a dump, thin walls so you could hear the neighbors 24/7, everything was so old and moldy, the size of a shoebox. Yet we loved it. It made us feel so adult. Ofc we lived paycheck to paycheck but her and I learned to budget pretty quick because no one was gonna bail us out. Same with Cory’s dad, my dad told me once you decide to leave this house you’re on your own. He taught me how to be a responsible man, ready to take care of my family. That’s what Alan was trying to do for Cory

But the difference is…someone outlined those parameters for you. Jacobs was a master strategist when he established core conflicts for his characters…but his imbalances come into full focus when there’s clear discrepancies between his characters’ foresight. It’s just framed haphazardly that neither Alan nor Amy had investment in where their son and daughter in law were headed after their engagement was back on…and even then, Alan became quickly apathetic in S7E4 when Cory was trying to find something to immerse in to detract from his pain losing Topanga. I dunno. This “way finding by hardship” came across as 88% projection, 12% actual faith in Cory. It’s one thing to have your own standards for what independence entails versus what you were put through (WHEN YOU ELOPED AND EXCLUDED YOUR FAMILY FROM)…and from what’s a feasible teaching experience. Alan forsook opportunities to learn himself about what empowerment his sons needed by Feeney and that’s why his significance became economic to them. Will Russ portrayed what he was given fervently and compellingly…but from my angle, Alan lost prominence because his investment was sporadic.

My favorite scene from Boy Meets World. I think because we don’t have this discussion in modern times these days. Everyone is entitled. If Alan helped Cory, Cory would have learned nothing nor appreciated the idea that he has to have responsibility for his own life. He grows, shows gratitude and understands how bad it can be. While at the same time learning to stay together when you’re at your lowest point. There will be a time where his parents won’t be there to bail him out. His dad is teaching him that he needs to be responsible no matter how bad it gets. It’s your life, deal with your life. A bad parent is one who does everything for you and refuses to let you grow up. That’s not helping them, that’s hurting them. Because if you bail out your kids at every single turn and the parents are no longer there, well you’re pretty much unable to do anything and you’d actually drown. I feel like the reason it's so hard for Cory is because his dad gave him a good life with money. My wife and I both grew up in lower class families, so when we first got married and were poor, it just felt like that's how it was supposed to be and we were okay with it. The worst part of this is that now that we have kids of our own and are giving them a better financial situation than either of our parents were able to give to us, I am terrified that my kids will have this sort of entitlement. Being poor and newly married was one of the most marriage strengthening things my wife and I ever went through. I hope other people can see that for themselves too.

This was a moment that issues I had with season 7. In this scene not only could Alan remind Cory of the choice he made on marriage but remind Cory he has a younger sister in 8th grade/high school and an infant brother who nearly died last year to give Cory a perspective when it comes to space, devolution and attention. But they left that out and it would have been perfect.

@@MarcoStrange Cory already looks bad and thanks to the times over the last 22 years (post Boy Meets World) in society you don't realize how much that some of the stuff Cory asked for was so unreasonable. I always felt that as Cory got older (say High School Senior and beyond) his character was less and less likable. He became lazier in school, did less activities than he did earlier on, and became too phobic of losing Shawn and Topanga. In this scene, Cory needed a HUGE kick in the mouth from Alan when it came to perspective and it wasn't just here the fact that Morgan and Josh (Cory's younger siblings) were brought practically never this whole season was a horrible writers move. They didn't have to have their own story but perhaps relate to both his siblings whether it be to help Morgan out of a jam, or maybe babysit Josh to get a perspective on what POTENTIAL parenting could be like. Season 7 was sloppy cause they only kept it going another year in anticipation for the wedding but then had nothing after.

@@MarcoStrange honestly I'm not sure either. Im guessing they had a plan to end with Season 6 but the executives at ABC stretched it one more year (my opinion the best season and one that closed up a lot of stories for most characters). I saw that TGIF was being disbanded that year due to Sabrina ending/cancelled and whatever shows were also on were gone as quickly. Idk if they planned to end it at 7 but it seems that was the way they went when they started coming up with bad storylines and crummy plots. I also think some of the actors wanted out since Rider Strong wanted to go to college, Corys on screen parents and William Daniels were used very little and Ben Savage went to college full-time following the show. I think season 7 was it cause the cast wanted it cancelled.

I grew up with this show and I always remember this scene as one of the greatest moments in the show. It was a serious and true to life moment like many others. This is what made the show so great. Alan has great motivation here, and i understand what he is trying to teach his son. However, as i watch this again as an adult i can't help but disagree. If i were him, i would have instilled the lesson while letting my son stay at the house while he figured out where to live. Before y'all jump on me for that. Let's explain that I'm someone who lives halfway across the country from any family. I moved and started a life of my own in a new state without knowing anyone, I've lived in a car, I've worked multiple jobs, I've seem how ugly the world can be, and I wouldn't trade any of those experience because I had an amazing journey through all of it. However, i firmly believe one of the biggest problems with the world is that people dont help each other the way they should. As Mr Feeny, once said you have to aspire to change the world not just become part of it. Yeah most people won't help you when you need it. Then you need to be different than everyone else and help those in need. Additionally, i believe that family should be those who you can turn to even when the rest of the world turns their back on you. i fully respect his decision, i just would have handled it differently if it was be. I'm a married man, and my wife and i live thousands of miles away from both our families. However, i know that if i need them, my parents, they would do what they can to help me. I don't see a problem with that. I would do the same for them and for my wife's family.

I can empathize with Cory because I react similarly to situations I'm unfamliliar with. When I was in the hospital for appendicites during the pandemic I freaked out when I saw the hospital bill (I didn't have insurance when the surgery took place because I hadn't bothered with it out of an arrogant belief that i didn't need it) I had such a massive case of sticker shock I could hardly breathe or think straight. Once I talked to my mom about it I was able to reassess and calm down to look at my options (something Cory needed to learn how to do, which this scene shows) and I found an option that not only helped me, but wiped out the bill altogether. I didn't go begging to mommy and daddy for 20,000 bucks. And if I had they would have laughed in my face because they don't have that kind of money lying around.

Years later i don't regret it because I learned a lot from it. You start out with parents paying for everything then eventually your on your own. I never really had a big problem with it. This episode, and even this scene, rubs me the wrong way for several reasons. First, Cory comes off here as whiny and entitled, expecting his parents to buy him a house in the suburbs (and that's what he literally says earlier in this episode). Second, his father seems to be implying here that if the appliances in your apartment aren't working the way they should, figure out how to fix them for yourself or live with them in disrepair, because that's what being an adult is all about. Third, and no one even comes to this conclusion, Cory and Topanga live in a RENTED apartment, which means they probably have a landlord (or superintendent) whose responsibility it is to fix a sink that has sludge coming out of the faucet. While I'm all on board here with the difficulties of being an adult sometimes, this episode doesn't see the middle ground. Cory becomes an out-of-character brat who somehow expects his parents bail him out of everything, while his father could at least offer a little assistance, such as getting a plumber or talking to the superintendent. Compromise is a real part of adulthood, and this episode failed to even acknowledge the compromise in this situation.

And let's be honest, they were young but naive to understand that marriage is difficult/takes more commitment and responsibility. Hence this scene right here which Alan was trying to convey to Cory.

I disagree. His dad warned him when Cory and Topanga announced that they were getting married that they were too young and they couldn’t handle the hardships of being married because they wasn’t prepared for it. This is one of those hardships, so they have to figure out together how to get over it, not run to their parents and let them fix it. Alan could’ve gave Cory some more advice on what to do for the situation they’re in, but Cory expected them to actually step in and take care of it for them without lifting a finger.

It was the married students dorm. So it was the colleges responsibility. But, that wasn't the point. They lived where they could afford, sometimes that means fixing it yourself. Not only that, but Cory didn't ask to borrow the tools and get some tips on how to fix it. He wanted his dad to do it for him. Alan was right.

The dorm being that horrible never made sense to me. Why would the college make the married dorms so much worse than the singles? Are they trying to punish students for getting married? If the rooms were as unlivable as shown, the school certainly would have made the news. Even the worst apartments have to have at the least clean water. And how did Cory's wardrobe suddenly reduce to one raggedy, torn sweatshirt that he had to wear at all times?
