@@jonimichalski69 The daytime serials really had an effect on previous generations, but sadly faded away. The shows alienated their loyal viewers to try and be more hip to new audiences and look where it got them.

ya know in my EARLIEST childhood memories i recall this theme and thinking OH NO BORING TV SHOW TIME... but damn they had some catchy music that i still enjoy today.

Jyung Woo u know I thought the very same thing too. After school and during the summer sometimes me and my brothers would have to go to our grandma's house while our mom still was at work. I always wanted to watch cartoons. But now that I'm older I greatly appreciate these shows because I almost completely missed out on them (now 32 years old). Thank you ABC for these shows

Yes they were.AMC & OLTL were hugely responsible for the success of ABC daytime for many years which was a testament to Agnes Nixon creative genius.

She and Douglas Marland created LOVING. Although not as successful, it was still beautifully written under their guidance.

They just had to replace it and the other ABC soaps with mediocre talk shows that regurgitate the same formula over and over. I totally understand the contributing factors but still… 🙄 That being said, at least General Hospital is hanging on but its quality appears to have declined in the past several years, so it might be on its way out, too.

If it does end in some extraordinary circumstance that can warrant a cancellation, it might be replaced by a newscast or another talk show with a similar concept. On the other hand, the soap opera genre is pretty much dying out (availability of the internet, higher employment among the target audience leading to less time at home, among other reasons), so there’s even less hope for an AMC return.

I'm 36 and remember coming home from school about noon and my mom would have this on... Along with oltl, and gh of course. Then inside edition came on and I went outside... Ah... Good times.

This is going to sound weird, but for me this video of all the openings of AMC is the best very-early birthday gift I ever saw, I’m turning 14 in 4-3 days. And I wish that someday someone would write a storyline that would bring back AMC. Am I right?

Cable television and streaming services allow people to watch reality television, which have overtaken soaps as the main form of daytime television entertainment since 2009. Although the soap schedule has remained unchanged since 2012, come the end of the 2020s we may no longer have any such programs between 12 pm and 4 pm each day. The last soap opera to air outside that timeframe ended in 2009. General Hospital, which aired at 3:00 pm for most of its history, moved to 2:00 pm in September 2012, although nine stations reversed those changes in 2014. Days of our Lives was renewed as expected for another season in November 2019, but it might not continue after 2021. NBC might be the first big three network to cease production on soap operas by the midpoint of next decade, and CBS and ABC could follow.
