I love this style of gardening. It’s simple, relaxed, do what you want (not what others tell you to do). I only have 4 tomato plants but I’ve let them run wild with suckers. I prune out the bottom and some inner foliage just to keep good air flow. My plants are healthy and happy, and that makes me happy!

Any time I am lamenting my tomato addiction, I watch the walk through your garden. There are only two of us, a few miles south of you. My 22 plants (IKR) are doing well with golfball to baseball size tomatoes. I gave away 42 plants to neighbors, family, and friends. After watching the last few videos, I planted seeds for Micro Tom and Lilly Lise that I will try to bring indoors this year. I have enjoyed your book so far and appreciate the videos. I am trying the aspirin this week. I just gave mine a dose of liquid fertilizer (fish and seaweed) and some epsom salt. So far, so good.

Just wanted to put out there I use the string method for my tomatoes, run above to my cattle panel arch with tomato clips for support. I found the best stake: a 9" plastic yellow tent stake! It's fantastic for this because it has a hole AND a hook you can attach your string to... and only 88 cents each at Walmart. I put a row cover over the cattle panel to protect them midday during our recent heatwave (100°F + for 5 days in a row), plus to protect them from wind and hail storms like we just had this past hour. My panels are set up so I can move them to other beds as I rotate tomatoes each year.

I really appreciate your “chaotic” tomato pruning technique! It has freed me from feeling like I am performing life-or-death surgery! Also, it is reassuring to see you toss fertilizer down the row and not add precise amounts per plant and meticulously work it into the soil. VERY liberating! Thank you!

If you plant carrots, they are a biennial. Plant them the first year for the root, and if you leave some in the ground, they will come back the next year and just flower. They bring lots of bees and pollinators to the garden. 20:00 aspirin, don't need to prune determinate tomato varieties, only prune indeterminate tomato varieties to maintain shape, always bottom prune both varieties for air flow.

The tiny Tim tomato seed I purchased from you is 8in tall and has 2 dozen tomatoes. I grew 8 plants and gave 7 of them out as gifts. I’m growing 5 types of heirloom tomatoes. 6 of each. Had to plant early April 1st because I started them too early. The tunnels I built worked and my tomatoes are over 5 ft. All but one or two have large tomatoes. I’ll be taking the seeds from the strongest and best producers and grow them next year. For some reason, I have not had anything attack my tomato, peppers or eggplants in 20 years. Even with a lot of rain I’m not getting any molds or yeast infections. I few leaves at the bottom my start, I just cut them off. Slugs, pill bugs and cut worms have been my only problem. I have all the walkways covered in wood chips. But Sluggo plus has taken care of that. Comfrey tea and compost, worm cutting tea is what I’ve been using to fertilize. Also I make my own mycorrhiza and fish amino acid. Hoping for the best harvest in years…….

The more I see your t-post staked/trellised tomato plants, the more I think I need to head over to our local tractor supply store. We staked our cherry tomatoes, but for most of our plants we're using cages I made from rolls of 5'x50' welding wire fencing. It's working well so far, but I like the superior access to all the nooks and crannies your t-post stake method affords.

Gary, I picked up a bundle of chopped barley straw/ wheat straw for mulch from Eden, Idaho. The brand is from Standlee products. We have had some pretty hot weather lately and it keeps the soil decently moist for toms, squash, beans, and peppers, not to mention lettuce and radishes. Hoping to get maybe three plantings of radishes. Stuff is looking pretty darn good so far. Toms have several blossoms. Hope to see some fruit sets soon. Picked up a broken bag of 100% steer manure compost today at work. May use some of it for side dressing toms, mixed with my 4- 6- 2 slow release fertilizer and a bit of bone meal, worm castings and gypsum for BER. Don't know yet. My Sun Gold cherry toms are booming out like crazy. If they don't get 3 or 4 feet tall, I will wonder why. Cheers my friend. Just to let you know how it's going in our little corner of paradise in So Central Montana. Nice to see a healthy, productive garden from another little slice of paradise. Bob in Montana.

I'm also in Eastern, NC. I was a little late getting the garden out this spring but I have gotten a big potato harvest, I have 8 and a half foot tall cherry tomatoes that I'm picking every day, and cucumbers are getting harvested daily as well. It's been a pretty good year so far other than a little bit of disease pressure from all that rain a couple weeks ago. I hope the rest of our season here in zone 8a goes as well as the spring did! Hurricanes will give us trouble, I'm sure. Best wishes!

I am late getting to this vid - but man, you hit a home run with me on many levels, in many areas. 1) I have grown Park's Whopper for 5 years. Happy to see this in your garden. One of my BEST producers and the tomato quality is equal to any heirloom out there. Flavor is a-one. 2) Pruning the end of a production stem. Well, hello! Major nugget for me today, thank you. 3) Pruning Rusted Garden Style - yep! I do "me" also. So appreciate this commentary. A lot of folks get wrapped around the axle on preciseness and perfection. You are setting them free, I hope they see this. Just so enjoy your rambles and common sense and wisdom. Oh lastly - so sorry about the cicada damage. Did your apples survive? Thanks, sir!

WOW!!! That's a lot of tomatoes! So many varieties! Your garden is awesome! I only have 9 toms planted, 3 each of Big Beef, Lemon Boy and Sungold cherry. Also a few backups in 6" pots just in case. I'll have room to plant them when I harvest my garlic next month. Did fewer toms this year to make space for tomatillos. This is my first year growing tomatillos.......yeah......I went overboard. I figured I lose some due to inexperience so I started 12. Only lost one. Gave some plants away. I couldn't NOT plant all of the remaining seedlings after raising them from seed and nurturing them through a Canadian winter....so I'm going to have about 8 million verde & violeta tomatillos. The bees are doing fine work pollinating them. They are only 3 feet tall and already loaded with husks. Good thing we like salsa.

I'm the same way... took so long caring for the seedlings, hard to pluck or toss out! 😄 Between heavy rains followed by a heatwave, plus an injury, I am behind, even though our last frost date was 5/22. First time growing tomatillos for me... 3 in bloom, they just shot up. I have 3-4 seedlings I started later as backups but still have to give them all their permanent places. My concern is our bee population is WAY down... very concerned. This year I am growing fewer slicers and my cherry seedlings just died... but I have 8 San Marzano planted for canning. Any excess fruit will be donated to the local food bank.

I use the Down To Earth product line , “Vegetable 4-4-4” once a few weeks after planting, and then “Rose and Flower 4-8-4” along with kelp meal for bloom phase. I wanted to mention this because a single 5lb bag of each is sufficient for my entire 100sqft tomato plot , and costs me only about $20-$30 for my entire growing season 5 months .So it really is not as expensive as one might think for quality organic fertilizers.

Curling is the big mystery. Everyone has an opinion but I think its just environmental stress the plant works out. Check for insects but if they arent around it is usually something you cant control. Oh wow, great information, thank you! Soooo You have so many cherry/small tomato plants, what do you do with that many? I’ve ended up with 5 plants, due to someone gracing me with them, and I was overwhelmed last year with 2!

Dear Gary, first of all thanks for all your videos; they have been so helpful to me! I have a quick question regarding this video where you explain fertilizers and their N-P-K values and importance. I live in SW New Mexico (kissing El Paso, Tx) and we've had an incredible heat wave for past 2 weeks of temps 100 and above. My TOMs aren't producing any flowers. In these conditions would you recommend adding Bone Meal to start producing fruits, or should I just be patient? Thanks in advance for your reply. PS I've been watering very frequently so the leaves on my plants have been staying green, and look healthy so far; fingers crossed they stay this way to eventually produce flowers and TOMs 🤞.

Glad to help! So at 90 F and higher. Tomatoes naturally shut down, drop flowers, abort fruit. It is too much heat stress to grow fruit, so the hang out. So fertilizers isn't the key. Mulch and moisture to keep the roots cool and shade cloth can help. Otherwise they will kick back in when temps are better. Hi Gary. My comment is not about tomatoes, but chili peppers. We are in winter here in Australia, but our daytime temps are 18-20C. I use a heat mat for germination, but I don't have grow lights. I find it difficult to germinate the seeds, and if they germinate the seed covering doesn't come off. And off course the plant dies. Do you have any advice for me? And a funny story about tomatoes. And mandarines. I had this beautiful 12 foot tall beefsteak tomato that had some great looking tomatoes on it. They started to disappear. And they were ripening lovely. Today when I checked my garden they were all gone. So I thought bugger it I'm pulling it. I went to start some more for the spring and when I dug into my coco coir I found tomatoes and mandarines. My bloody dog was saving them for later when they ripen. At the moment we are not talking. LOL

That is so funny about the dog hiding the tomatoes. You can't make that up. I don't use dome on my plants. I found they create a fungus haven. Peppers like heat. A heat mat that keeps the seedling at 80F or 26C is best. That temp tends to germinate them faster and keeps up good growth. I so want to visit Australia. Good luck. Would you consider spraying half of the tomatoes with peroxide and half without so we can see the difference as the plants head into the humid summer?

I have done that in the past. When I was learning about H202. I don't have videos not that but lots of videos with my plants having early blight and stuff from 2017 and earlier. Notice you don't see many of those types of videos for the last 3 years. I learned how to manage it. I don't want to bring growing diseases on plants into my garden, so Ill have to skip that idea. Do you think the Espoma will affect the plant's stems if it gets next to them and make the plant wilt? Have you ever had that happen with the way you put the fertlizer on the surface of mulch?

This might be a little off topic, but would you put wood chip mulch around onions? It’s the only spot in my garden without right now, and just seems like it would be a bad idea, but it looks so weird.
