Seems like Honda is returning back to the mid 2000s Honda Pilot with that boxy look. This vehicle looks promising: 1) Naturally aspirated V6 and not turbocharged 2) Large cargo room even with 3rd row seats up 3) Roomy interior/seats 4) Bulky enough to handle rough weather/terrain 5) Decent fuel economy 6) Again, no turbocharging nonsense and over the top gimmicky interior

Those who understand the the parts of the car your can't see, (engine, suspension, AWD system etc), and how they compare to the Korean Twins, understand there is no competition. The Honda is a car for those who also care about driving dynamics. Kia and Hyundai are making nice crossover's, but they are basically a couch on wheels. The Pilot still manages to make driving fun..

I prefer features that will not break at 40,000 miles, so I’m perfectly fine with outdated 7” or 9” infotainment screens that won’t distract you while you’re driving. That’s why you have logical, intuitive buttons and ergonomics that Honda is known for.

Size of screen has nothing to do with durability, and squinting at a small screen that has squished the CarPlay into a 7” rectangle isn’t necessarily safe either. Legible, easy to read displays make sense, there is no moral virtue is a tiny screen, especially at todays prices.

The main difference for me and pricing regarding the Kia and Hyundai is the markup on those vehicles. Still dealerships in my area are marking up the Telluride on all trims by several thousands. Mazda, Honda, and other manufacturers are not. Just for reference I’m in South Florida. I’m actually in the market as my lease ends next August on my CX-9 and I can say I won’t consider anything that’s marked up above MSRP. Even though the infotainment is on the smaller side the Pilot is very well done. I’ll definitely add it to my potential candidates. As always, great job guys!

Uhmm, looking at navigation, back-up camera, and the occasional music change? Obviously 15 inches would be too large, but that doesn't change the fact that 7 inches is indeed a very small screen size for this size of car. A 9-10 inch screen would be appropriate in both aspects.

In case Honda reads these comments. It is nice to have non turbo vehicles. Years from now there will be a lot higher percentage of normally asperated engine vehicles on the road than the turbo models. Another great review guys. Love the vibe while watching. I wish Honda brought back the manual shifter. The push button makes it feel wimpy. Bring back the traditional shifter!! 3.5L V6 is tried and true. It still is on my 2006 Odyssey. May need to go with this SUV since all kids grown up now and it will allow us to drive safely through rain and snow. 😊 They need to provide a larger entertainment screen and wireless CarPlay otherwise wires will be hanging everywhere. It looks like Honda neglected this portion of the design and just dropped it in for now. Bench seats bring your family members closer to each other without having someone left out behind at the back of the cave.

Great job as usual Zack and Andrea! This is at the top of my list right now (as well as the MDX Type S) mainly because it still has a V6 *AND* because I can get a 2nd-row bench seat with all the goodies (Elite trim)! Normally (in many brands) if I want the head-up display, heated 2nd row seats, etc., I am forced into captain's chairs because apparently, marketing research says that folks that can afford the top trim don't need the extra room in the 2nd row. I call BALONEY on that - haven't these marketing companies and car brands ever heard of families with three kids? For a road trip, I want all three kids in the 2nd row, leaving plenty of room with the 3rd row folded for all our stuff. And Honda/Acura have come to their senses and given me what I want!!! THANK YOU HONDA! But I have one gripe (that's me!) - why can't the Trail Sport be offered with the 2nd row bench as an option? I much prefer the smaller wheels and taller sidewall tires. Make that two grips: what's up with the tiny screen? I have more or less resigned myself to living with the 9" display in the Elite trim, but wouldn't it be great if Honda would give us a moving map on the MID? I get that the HUD can show navigation turn info, but there's no substitute for a map on the MID!!!

I bought a brand new 2023 Honda Pilot Sport three weeks ago. It is bigger and looks better than previous generations. It's gas mileage is average, performance is OKish, nothing impressive. The brake is not responsive, you have to push the brake harder to get it stopped. But, The second day, the check engine light on. Here is the message:"Emissions system problem. Power may be reduced. See dealer". I immediately drove it to the dealership Service Dept. But, that Service Advisor said I did not make an appointment and has a kind of "do not care" attitude. It took me lots of efforts and almost 5 trips, eventually, they said it a sensor issues which is in some kind of value of the gas tank areas.They put order to replace the value and sensor. But, it has been over 15 days and no ETA from the supplier! Plus, the driver side wiper blade simply flew away the first time I turned it on in the heavy rain. It took three phone calls and two appointments to get the new wiper blade installed because it need to be "ordered" also. On the left side of back window, the bottom trim is not glued well and can easily peel off and has not fixed by the Service Dept yet. Since 1996,I used two Honda Accord which were very reliable. and a Honda Odysessy van which had transmission issues after 6 years. After that, I bought new Acura MDX and drove it for over 15 years and very reliable. That is the reasons I come back to bought this 2023 Honda Pilot. But, looks like Honda's build quality dramatically degraded. If I have choice now, I will NEVER buy Honda cars again. First, the manufacturing quality is very bad from my experience with the brand new Pilot, secondly, the experience with the Service dept is very bad also. Especially with the ordering of parts, it take over 15 days , no ETA ! what's hectic ! From the Honda manufacturer to the Service, the Honda is degrading big time. I will not recommand anybody to buy the 2023 Pilot.

Zach and Adrea! I hope you'll be able to add Grand Hylander to the comparison as well. There are a couple of things that I noticed when I test-drive new Pilot vs Korean twins. In Korean twins, the driver seat height can adjust more compare to the pilot. As you said, 7/9 inch screen is a big joke. I have no idea why they came up with something like that. Regarding the third-row legroom, the pilot wins on numbers. However, second-row seat rails stand way higher resulting in having tiny space to keep your foot and can't move at all. Since the second-row middle seat can't move forward, in practice I would say Korean twins and pilot has the same discomfort level.

Do you think the highlander should be compared to these larger SUV's? When Toyota changed the highlander to this more car like gen it seems like it's more like a rave 4 size. There is not much room inside. The new Grand Highlander should be the comparison from now on for this size of SUV's. The normal highlander is somewhere in-between. A chart brake down of size comparisons would be helpful. exterior, and interior dims. The rear door hatch dims as well. It's always nice to see what can fit through the back hatch. I think Honda needs to start cutting prices, they charge too much for what you get. Honda has been really coasting along on their reputation for reliability. In a world where the likes of Kia and Hyundai have excellent reliability and a reputation for packing their vehicles with lots of features for a relatively low-cost, Honda needs to step up. I have owned the Hyundai and I currently own a Kia and I don't see any reason to spend thousands more on a Honda or even the Toyota when I have experienced excellent reliability. I think the real competition for the Honda pilot is the Nissan Pathfinder. The Pathfinder has an excellent V6 engine, 9-speed automatic transmission and excellent fuel economy for the class. The base model all-wheel-drive pilot is $6,000 more expensive than the base all-wheel drive Pathfinder. Comparably equipped with all the same options, that Honda pilot is still $3,000 more. Absolutely crazy!

At least in Canada this Pilot doesn’t cost any more than a Palisade or Telluride. Those two have more tech for sure. But up until 2016-2017 Hyundai produced some absolute junk! Horrible cars that catch fire and blow engines consistently. Only time will tell if current cars are better. Honda on the other hand has had a few hiccups with the 1.5T engine but otherwise has been making solid cars for decades. That’s what sells for the older crowd..
@scottfurlong5475
@scottfurlong5475 Жыл бұрын
@@gs98999 yeah, Hyundai did have a bad string of engines there for a bit with the 2.4L Lambda. Kia and Hyundai V6 engines have been stellar performers. I worked in the automotive repair and recycling business from 1994 to 2011 and I watched Hyundai and Kia climb the ladder from the low-life of all vehicles to something all the others were watching carefully. That's why I didn't hesitate to purchase a Kia Sedona van in the fall of 2015. I have 192000 km on that 3.3 L Kia Sedona and no issues except for some defective drive axles which were corrected at 12000 km. In my area, the Honda pilot is about $2,700 more then a comparably equipped Palisade or Telluride and the Pathfinder is slightly cheaper than the Palisade and Telluride. I think we need an all-wheel-drive SUV before the snow falls again but I'll have a hard time convincing wifey to give up her van. It's been an extremely reliable member of the family. A lot of these mid-sized SUVs that contain the space we need as a family are coming with standard features that are pricing them a little out of our comfort zone. Incomparably equipped Sorento will cost us $10,000 less but I'm waiting to see what the 2024 redesign does.

Honda needs to offer more and less conservative exterior colors, and more options on interior colors (e.g. you can buy the red Pilot with any interior color as long as it is black). Solid black interiors are uninteresting and cheap looking.

I’d like to see an updated top 5 list for both 3row mid size SUVs and large second row SUVs. 6cylinder models only. For years they have shrunk “midsize SUVs” to compete with crossovers and mpg. And they literally lost the point of the midsize suv, second row room is what was squeezed out the most! I’ve got a child that is growing and still has to have a car seat and has a walker and wheelchair to haul around as well with a total of 5 people in the vehicle. The largest second row seating I found was a crew cab Ram truck, with covered bed. It actually beats out almost the entire SUV market in real cab room. But we need gas mileage, and not an underpowered turbo 4 in a midsize suv. What I’ve been looking at is traverse/Acadia/xt6, NA v6. Audi Q7 with turbo v6, and they all get the same practical gas mileage. Telluride and this pilot look like good options also! There’s a reason the RAV4 is best selling I’m the US right now. They do get excellent gas mileage and actually have second row room, and still have reasonable cargo space. But it’s also not really my thing in it’s really too car like when you walk around, and it would be nice to have something that could still tow 5k or more. But other vehicles like explorer, xt5, Cherokee (especially Cherokee in the mid size has almost deleted their second row leg room or room between backseat and front seat. It’s ridiculous to have midsize SUVs with lack of leg room in the second row. And it’s ridiculous to have crew cab trucks that have better passenger room then SUVs. I hope the manufacturers read this!!!

I kind the way Honda pilot drives but interior will not she well in 3-4 years later. I do line buttons over touch screen. So Honda keeping things buttons? Great but if they can do it like GV70 then it would look much better. It’s hard decision but would have to give my vote to Telluride. I am really looking for the new Ridgeline!! Thank you for reviewing this!!

The interior does look rather traditional. While I'm not the biggest fan of screens everywhere, something about the way it is laid out looks last generation. I don't know. The interior's aesthetics are a weak point vs. other vehicles. Mazda is probably doing it best with the Korean twins a very close second. The Highlander is good as well in its higher level twins if a bit traditional. The exterior of the Pilot of truckish so I guess that appeals to some. Something about the window between the C and D pillars looks off to me.

Kinda disappointed by this video especially when comparing this to the Korean twins. What Pilot does a LOT better than those vehicles is ride and handling. I test drove telluride, palisade, pathfinder and few others. They are total boats and felt like driving a truck. Pilot felt like driving a bigger CRV. It baffles me how so many reviewers focus on a smaller screen which you won't be looking at 99% of the time when driving the vehicle, but hardly talk about driving dynamics which is what really matters on the road. The torque vectoring itself makes this a far superior vehicle than anything in its class. Obviously, the sport mode of an 8 seater cannot be compared with an RDX, but in its class, I found this to be truly special. Only other vehicle that drives this well is an explorer but it's much smaller and lacks in usability of the Pilot. Anyone reading this, please test drive all of the 3 row suvs before spending over 50k. Pilot is WAY better than the Korean twins, highlander, pathfinder etc. To be totally transparent, I didn't drive an Atlas bcos of reliability.

really hope they added 12.3 inch screen from the Accord for the next Model year, also add hybrid powertrain, and get rid of fake exhaust, but too bad, Honda is probably adding these features for the mid-cycle refresh which will take at least 3 more years.
@goinwitdaflow
@goinwitdaflow Жыл бұрын
I think Honda chose the 9inch screen because of the shifting market towards SUVs. They can use the cheaper 9inch screen and still charge a high price for their SUV and thus increases their profits without having to use higher priced materials. That’s why we don’t see a full digital dash in none of their SUVs, as long as the consumer buys it then Honda probably doesn’t see a reason to have it available. The accord isn’t moving volume like their SUVs, so they try to entice buyers by making the full digital dash and 12inch screen standard.
@marclangman4836
@marclangman4836 Жыл бұрын
The difference in price between a 9” LCD panel and a 12” is nothing, $50 at most. My assumption is that Honda wanted to give more a wow factor in the Accord and an interior that will stand the test of time in the Pilot.

Zach and Andrea, you mentioned that this doesn't offer a digital rear view mirror, and I agree that's a bummer. But someone once mentioned that they get a bit of motion sickness using the LCD rear view mirror, presumably because there is a small delay in what you see in the mirror vs. what is really going on. Have either of you experienced that? If so, is it the case for *all* vehicles with the feature, or just particular ones? Inquiring minds want (no, need!) to know :-) Thanks again for your usual thorough review. I especially appreciate you answering questions from Instagram during the review - I think you may have a monopoly on that! (Congrats!)

I have 3 CRVs and a Civic EX (VTEC). The 1st is finally breaking down after 300,000mi and not the engine. Most of the suspension, needs replacing, the bushings, etc. The second is just over 200,000mi, and great. The third is at just under 100,000. I’ve handed down the cars to my sister and her children. The civic had 300,000mi, before it was stolen and parted out in Mexico. With just regular maintenance, Hondas can get an easy 300,000mi, so the little extra in price blows the Korean Brothers out of the water. I brought my newest CRV into Honda and was looking at the Pilot and was offered $10,000 trade value, but I’m giving it to my sister and taking back my first CRV; rebuilding it to a solo camper. The small screen seems to be one of the only complaint, but it doesn’t bother me, because your eyes should be on the road. I’m still going to get the Pilot, mainly because of lifespan, but it’s everything Honda that me stay loyal. I really like the Palisade, but Hyundai is not known for engine life. I feel Hyundai is getting better, but until then, Honda gets my money.
