All-new 2024 BYD Shark - Best Off-road PHEV l Specs and features
BYD launched its first electric pickup truck in Mexico for 53,400 USD. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) packs dual motors with 429 horsepower and a 5.7-second acceleration time from 0 to 100km/h (0 to 62 mph).
The BYD Shark is built on the DMO platform, an in-house developed PHEV platform by BYD specifically designed for off-road vehicles. This platform is based on the DM-p, which supports most of BYD's 4WD hybrids in China. "DM" stands for dual mode.
The BYD Shark is a substantial truck, measuring nearly 5.5 meters (220 inches) in length and offering five seats. Its dimensions are 5457 mm in length, 1971 mm in width, and 1925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3260 mm.
This PHEV truck has a towing capacity of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs) and a maximum payload of 835 kg. It also boasts a loading volume of 1,450 liters.The front motor of the BYD Shark delivers 170 kW of power and 310 Nm of peak torque, while the rear motor provides 150 kW and 340 Nm of torque. Altogether, the electric powertrain produces a maximum power of 320 kW (429 hp) and 650 Nm of peak torque. The Shark can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. These electric motors are paired with a 1.5L turbocharged internal combustion engine.
The BYD Shark is equipped with BYD's LFP Blade battery, which has a capacity of 29.58 kWh. This battery provides a pure electric range of 100 km under NEDC conditions and a combined range of 840 km with a full battery and fuel tank. The NEDC fuel consumption is 7.5L/100 km.
Inside, the Shark features a rotatable central control screen, a common element in all BYD EVs, measuring 12.8 inches. This is complemented by a 10.25-inch instrument panel in front of the driver. The interior includes numerous physical buttons on the steering wheel and central console, where the gear selector is located.
The BYD Shark will compete with the Ford Ranger PHEV and Toyota Hilux in the Mexican market. Stella Li, BYD America’s CEO, previously stated that BYD has no plans to sell any EVs in the US. However, this is not entirely accurate.
