This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2024 Hyundai Kona EV. The 2024 Hyundai Kona EV has grown in size, it’s more aerodynamic and it gets a futuristic exterior design!
The The 2024 Hyundai Kona EV has a 64.8 kWh battery with 418 km/260 miles of range, 201 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. This is a FWD model. In the US, there is also an entry level model with 133 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque but a smaller 48.6 kWh battery with 200 miles of range.
Hyundai gave the The 2024 Hyundai Kona EV interior a modern and clean design that is open and spacious with increased, headroom, shoulder and legroom compared to the outgoing model. Cargo capacity has also increased making this a great family option. There is even a front trunk on this EV although quite small. There are plenty of upgrades to this new model including Hyundai’s next generation infotainment system with dual screens, a 12.3” touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a feature many have been waiting for from Hyundai, a 12.3” digital driver display, over the air software updates and a digital key.
The The 2024 Hyundai Kona EV seats are also more comfortable and are 30% slimmer to maximize rear legroom and the second row curveless bench seat also helps with passenger space.
The battery will charge from 10-80% in approximately 43 minutes with available 400V fast-charging capability.
In Canada, MSRP has been announced, the Preferred model starts at $46,399 CAD and the Ultimate trim $51,199 CAD. In the US, SE $32,675 USD,
SEL $36,675 USD, Limited $41,045 USD.
The The 2024 Hyundai Kona EV qualifies for the Canadian Federal EV rebate of $5,000 and any rebates in participating provinces. In the US, a credit may be available at some dealerships if the vehicle is leased.
Hyundai offers a warranty of 5 years or 100,000 km/60,000 miles.
In the US, complimentary maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Drove it and bought it. A huge improvement over my friends gen 1 Kona that is really a 2 seater with luggage. A week later I’m very impressed with the features and performance. The auto regen setting is brilliant. I disagree re noise level. It seems quiet compared to some other EV’s I have driven.

Nice review again! It was really nice to see a spare tire location. I was looking at L2 EVSEs and the cables seem to be typically 24 ft so pretty easy at home for a car like this I think. The EX30 is going to be the tough one in this class when it comes out IMO. BTW Did you and Zack have any luck installing a L2 charger at home? It seems like it will be needed in your business in the long run. My dad (84 year old retired farmer) got his going last week.

I don't know about other EVs but I have 2 Teslas. One with 120k miles and a brand new one because my wife refuses to give me my Tesla back lol. They are probably the best cars i've ever owned. 60k for a battery replacement is fear mongering at best. You could just buy a whole new car for that much plus my batteries come with 100k warranty and I have secondary insurance on the battery for my older Tesla.

Me and my friend are loyal fan of yours. After watching your last video on the misfortune of that IONIQ 5 owner with his battery, me and my friend had a discussion about electric vehicles. In the IONIQ 5 case, it was clear that Hyundai did not have a good system to address "that" maintenance issue/protocol. Do you think EV (and its dealership support system) is still ready for the market and potential car buyers? Or is it a brand by brand thing, while some brands we can really trust, and others are still questionable?

I just got myself the Hyundai Tucson hybrid and my daughter the Kona gas model. I was hoping they would have a hybrid in the Kona. Seems they’re going full gas or full EV and not the partial electrification. Anyway, early days, but we’re both happy so far. What I don’t understand is we both have the N-Line. My car has mesh/leatherette seats and hers has suede/leatherette that look more upscale. We both have 2024 NLine, why the design differences. Hyundai seems to be a bit all over the place even within a release year.

How much is a replacement battery for this one? What sort of things void the battery warranty?
@andreaspencer9813
@andreaspencer9813 6 ай бұрын
There is only one Hyundai battery warranty so it will be the same as what we reported. Impacts to the battery are not covered. But if you ride over something in an ICE vehicle and you do damage to the vehicle, it won't be covered either. If battery replacement costs are higher than what the vehicle is worth, it is a problem for any brand including Hyundai. As for how much does a replacement batter cost? Yes, that's a very good question, one we can't answer today. This is a wake up call for all brands not just Hyundai. Battery replacement costs need to come down or there has be a process in place where cells within the battery can be replaced to keep costs down. These vehicles have a battery at the bottom of the vehicle that goes from the front to the rear, how much does the battery protection cover actually protect the battery? Maybe an EV with greater ground clearance is a better option, so it doesn't sit so low to the ground. I don't know but we'll definitely keep digging so that consumers can make better choices and fully understand what they are getting into. This is all new but electric vehicles are not going away, they are the future, better processes need to be in place when evaluating damage to the battery cover and the battery.

@andrea you are 100% correct. As a BMW i4 owner, I always hold my breath when going over speed bumps. There is one speed bump over my office that I actively avoid because it impacts the undercarriage. In my view - manufacturers should be held accountable for designing protections that can deal with day to day operations. It is a huge problem that needs to be addressed.

Andrea, I think the question regarding the front charging door was more about accessibility during winter. I switched this summer from the GV60 to the electrified GV70 which has the front charging door. Being in Quebec, we had our first snow storm about 2 weeks ago and it got fairly cold right after.... meaning that the charging door got snowed in, then almost froze shut. And the door movement in the cold is a bit tight. Seeing this, I now carry some sort of spatula in the car, just in case I need to open that door on the road. Hope this answers a bit of the question!

Re Wireless Apple Car Play. That feature is based on the 'head unit' (e.g. 'radio/connected vehicle unit) and the current version does not support wireless Car Play. For the Hyundai product line the updated head unit comes with the 2024 Kona. From what I've seen - and this is odd - the highest trim level (which I believe has a larger screen) does not have wireless Car Play. Odd...

Does the 5 year warranty cover the ev battery? What is its expected replacement cost? A 24 Honda CRV Hybrid comes in $5000 less but no tax incentive. So similar outlay in cost after a federal rebate. I think I’d roll the dice on a bigger fuel efficient CRV Hybrid that get 38-42 MPG. It too will at some point need a battery replacement but guessing that would be cheaper than replacing an EV’s battery.

I have a Kona EV 2021 and the 12V battery only lasted 2 years. Also now Hyundai is back ordered 2 months on the replacement battery. So you are really screwed if your 12v battery dies. I bought a $169.99 battery elsewhere showed it to my dealer and they scoffed at it being the “wrong battery “ but they couldn’t provide me with a Hyundai (2year warranty) battery for almost $500. The 12V is really this car’s Achilles heel. Plus the fact that in Victoria BC you’d have to wait months just to get it into servicing due to lack of technicians. So buyer beware and if you do…carry a portable charger for your 12v battery.

I was shopping for an EV, considered this a lot considering the payments on the Ultimate trim of the 24' Kona Ultimate vs other competitors but we decided to get a Niro Wave instead. It came down to having no air vents in the back seat, if you have kids back there, no heat in the legs. I'm surprised Hyundai would package things like that, they are some blunders for sure. Compare this to a Niro, even the mid Wind+ trim has vents back there and a powered tailgate, why.. I understand omitting heated rear seats, driver seat memory or even powered passenger seats, but really no rear events is not great. The vehicle otherwise is great, screens are big, newer CCNC infotainment system which supports wireless CP and AA, finally! but compare that to competitors, the Niro in the top Wave trim adds driver seat memory, powered passenger seat, heated rear seats, powered tailgate, air vents!. Everyone has different priorities, if you have cold feet, skip this one please, hell if you don't care for ventilated seats and some additional safety features, I think the Niro Wind+ would be a better buy... /rant over, sorry.. Zack and Andrea, keep rocking, greetings from Edmonton, only Canadian channel I watch, period!

Front Grill chargers are not a good idea. If you live in a snowy environment, the front of the vehicle gets filled with dirt & slush. Additionally, if you get into a small accident the charger may get damaged and could restrict your ability to charge.

Did you know it's now heated? I had one for two years; yes, it would freeze but I just had to tap the ice away with a snow brush.

Why not start including battery replacement cost following the recent revelations of the surcharge for EV Batterys. $60,000 battery for a $55,000 new car. Seems cheaper to scrap the old car and buy a new one rather replace the battery..

This design doesn’t work for me. In profile it looks like a sedan with lights in the fenders and then they just squished an SUV body on top of it with another set of lights.

I prefer wired Android Auto for stable connection and your phone is less hotter than using wireless, too bad my family's Hyundai Stargazer only have wireless. My solution for the heat problem is get a phone holder (the one you put on the air vent)

@@jamespaul2587 The dealerships are the front line reps of manufacturers. If their reps treat customers this way, then Hyundai is going to lose a lot of customers, as I hope they already have. Hyundai has to make this right with the customer and sever ties with this dealer if they want to save any face. I just wish they said the name of the dealership so it could face the outrage it caused.

Although looks are subjective to a certain extent, I agree with Zach the looks of this Kona EV does not look good at all; by the same token most of the Korean cars are trying too hard to assert a certain identity, over-design and pretentious, taking cues from popular brands here and there and changing their "looks" more often than needed. Certainly lacks the restrained form & function aesthetics of the European brands.

Yesz they can do a software update to get wireless AA/CarPlay...they have already done this in Europe for a bunch if their vehicles. The question with Hyundai is...WILL they? Hyundai continues to make some boneheaded decisions these days!
