Volvo Takes Aim at the Electric MPV Segment with the New EM90
Volvo Cars has unveiled its newest model, the Volvo EM90, an all-electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that marks the Swedish automaker's entry into the rapidly growing premium electric MPV segment. The EM90 made its global debut at an event in China, where it will first go on sale later this year before expanding to other markets.
With the reveal of the EM90, Volvo is embarking on an ambitious electrification strategy that will see the company transition to being a fully electric car brand by 2030. The new model also represents Volvo's push to capture more market share in China, which is projected to become the world's largest EV market.
"The launch of the Volvo EM90 reinforces our commitment to becoming a leader in the premium electric segment,” said Volvo CEO Jim Rowan. “This model combines versatile practicality with trademark Volvo safety and class-leading connectivity."
Drawing inspiration from iconic predecessors like the Volvo Duett, the EM90 blends practicality and comfort with a sleek, modern exterior design. The interior features premium materials and the latest version of Volvo's infotainment system with built-in services and apps.
With seating for up to seven passengers, the EM90 provides flexible cargo capacity thanks to its flat-folding second and third row seats. Volvo emphasizes the model's potential as both a family vehicle and business transportation.
The EM90 will initially be offered with a twin motor, all-wheel drive powertrain producing 300kW (402 horsepower) and 770Nm of torque. This enables a 0-100km/h time under 5 seconds. The 100kWh battery offers a preliminary WLTP range estimate of up to 600km. Support for 150kW DC fast charging allows an 80% charge in just 30 minutes.
Safety has always been a priority for Volvo, and the EM90 incorporates the latest driver assistance tech as part of the brand's vision for future accident-free driving. This includes LiDAR sensors and software for automated driving functions that Volvo plans to activate over time via over-the-air updates.
Volvo design chief Robin Page described the inspiration behind the EM90: “We took our Scandinavian roots and Volvo’s heritage in versatility and created a car that offers something entirely new for families - a lounge-like interior with space for everything you need and the luxurious feeling you want.”
Page pointed to the Duett, which turns 70 in 2023, as an iconic influence that pioneered Volvo’s reputation for practical yet stylish estate cars. The EM90 brings this versatile spirit into the electric age while also signaling Volvo’s ambitions in China’s booming MPV segment.
The model will enter production later in 2023 at Volvo’s plant in Luqiao, which assembles the brand’s range of electrified vehicles for Chinese customers. Following its launch in China, the EM90 will be introduced globally as part of Volvo’s growing EV lineup.

With versatile capability, generous space, and trademark Scandinavian design, Volvo’s new EM90 electric MPV aims to make a strong impression in this emerging segment.
