The Porsche 911 (pronounced Nine Eleven or in German: Neunelfer) is a two-door 2+2 high performance rear-engined sports car introduced in September 1964 by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. It has a rear-mounted flat-six engine and originally a torsion bar suspension. The car has been continuously enhanced through the years but the basic concept has remained unchanged.[1] The engines were air-cooled until the introduction of the 996 series in 1998.[2][3]
The 911 has been raced extensively by private and factory teams, in a variety of classes. It is among the most successful competition cars. In the mid-1970s, the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera RSR won world championship races including Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Daytona. The 911-derived 935 turbo also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. Porsche won the World Championship for Makes in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979 with 911-derived models.
In a 1999 poll to determine the Car of the Century, the 911 was fifth.[4] It is one of two in the top five that had remained continuously in production (the original Beetle remained in production until 2003).[5] The one millionth example was manufactured in May 2017 and is in the company’s permanent collection.
The replacement for the SC series came in 1984 as the 911 3.2 Carrera, reviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. This was the last iteration in the original 911 series.
A new higher-displacement engine, a 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat 6-cylinder unit, was utilized. At the time Porsche claimed it was 80% new.[19] The new swept volume of 3,164 cc was achieved using the 95 mm (3.7 in) bore (from the previous SC model) combined with the 1978 Turbo 3.3 crankshaft's 74.4 mm (2.9 in) stroke. In addition, higher domed pistons increased the compression ratio from 9.8 to 10.3:1 (9.5:1 for the US market). New inlet manifold and exhaust systems were fitted. The 915 transmission was carried over from the SC series for the first three model years. In 1987, the Carrera got a new five-speed gearbox sourced from Getrag, model number G50 with proven BorgWarner synchronizers. This slightly heavier version also featured a hydraulically operated clutch.
With the new engine, power was increased to 207 hp (154 kW; 210 PS) (at 5,900 rpm) for North American-delivered cars and to 237 PS (174 kW; 234 hp) (at 5,900 rpm) for most other markets. This version of the 911 accelerated 0-97 km/h (0-60 mph) in 5.4 seconds and had a top speed of 240 km/h (150 mph) as measured by Autocar. Factory figures were more modest: 0-97 km/h (60 mph) time of 6.3 seconds for the US version and 6.1 seconds for cars outside the American market.
The brake discs were increased in size to aid in more effective heat dissipation and improved oil-fed chain tensioners were fitted to the engine. To improve oil cooling, a finned cooler replaced the serpentine lines in the front passenger fender well. This was further improved in 1987, with the addition of a thermostatically controlled fan.
Driving refinement and motor reliability were improved with an upgrade of the fuel and ignition control components to an L-Jetronic with Bosch Motronics 2 DME (Digital Motor Electronics system). An improvement in fuel efficiency was due to the DME providing a petrol cut-off on the overrun. Changes in the fuel map and chip programming from October 1986 further improved the power to 217 hp (162 kW; 220 PS) (at 5,900 rpm) for North American delivered cars as well as for other markets mandating low emissions, like Germany.
Three basic models were available - coupé, targa and cabriolet. The Carrera is almost indistinguishable from the SC with the external clue being the front fog lights that were integrated into the front valance. Only cosmetic changes were made during the production of the Carrera, with a redesigned dashboard featuring larger air conditioning vents appearing in 1986.
In 1984, Porsche also introduced the M491 option. It was commonly known as the "Turbo-Look". It was a style that resembled the 930 Turbo with wide wheel arches and the distinctive "tea tray" tail. It featured the stiffer suspension shared with the Turbo and the superior Turbo braking system as well as the wider Turbo wheels.

I will have to admit I have been building models for many years and these days I air brush everything but this channel taught me using traditional spray paints work just as well or better than the tiny over priced Model Master or Testor spray paints I thought I had to use coming up in this hobby.

I have watched a lot of Chris's builds and agree with you. At this point I use spray cans, like Rustoleum 2x to prime all the parts, then I airbrush the colors I want on (mainly the body parts, and lately with acrylics) and hand paint the rest where masking all of these little parts would be a total pain. It's working out pretty well but I did have to "cut down on the coffee" so my hands would be more trustworthy while hand painting. Chris is blessed with a very steady hand and I realized how much of an advantage that gives you so you don't have to mask and airbrush every little thing. Also it helps to have some very tiny brushes and a good set of magnifiers, especially at my age. Well worth the investment. Thanks to HPI Guys I've also discovered that you can use cheap craft paints to airbrush even the body with. A couple of coats of "future" floor polish makes them look just as good as enamels in my opinion, so even that's fairly cheap. Yeah, ya don't have to spend a fortune on model paint, nor a fortune on spray cans either. I'm only talking cars and trucks though, not replica military models.

So I picked this model up in hopes to build and send it off to my dad for Father’s Day. Thank God I ran into this video! You make it so easy with your steady surgeon hands. Hopefully I could pull this off. In the 1980s, when Porsches were reasonably priced, my dad had a 1972 911T Targa and later sold it for a 1978 911SC, so I’m sure he would love this 1984. I personally owned a 1974 911 as well, so yeah, this model will be perfect. Thanks again for this video, you earned yourself a new subscriber, I look forward to watching more and learning more!

I have a Fujimi ( Japan ) 911 Carrera 2 in my stash. It is basically a curbside and is not nearly as nice as this Revell example. The one positive on the Fujimi kit is that the body comes pre-painted and has a very nice finish. Still, I would rather have the engine and suspension detail of this Revell kit. A little trick that I often use : When I paint vehicles red - I use a brush to paint the backsides of the tail light housings white - that way, the color of the tail light lens does not get lost in body color.

Really nice kit, love the engine especially. I was amazed that you could build so much of it before paint. Nice shine too. "Future" I assume? How many coats? Did you polish it as well? I really didn't think the front wheels would still be steerable in the end but they were! Amazing. So did you chrome the headlight pans before putting the lenses in? I didn't see what you did with them. Sorry if I missed it, was cooking dinner as I watched.... You are a master builder.

He did a video on this a few years ago. The main reason was the cost. The small Testors ( or similar ) rattle cans usually run about $6 to $11 each. You can buy a large can of very similar quality and coverage at Wal-Mart or other discount stores, for about $3.99. As you can see - he gets good results.
@boss9mustang404
@boss9mustang404 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. I watched that video and that's how I learned to paint a car with Rusto. Good stuff but modeling snobs get pissed off when you get show-quality shine with Primer, Paint, then Clear instead of Insane wet-sanding, then 4 super thin coats of primer, all wet sanded then 5 coats of paint, all wet sanded then clear, then polishing and buffing and all that shit(those numbers were exaggerated but you get the idea). sure they look AWESOME after all that but I aint got time fo' dat!

Hi Chris, first off, beautiful work on this kit! I e seen a few of your videos and you do some really great work! Question for you… I’m currently building the Fujimi 930 enthusiast kit #2 and, in the last, I’ve always painted my 911 chassis flat black. Now that I’m older and more into authenticity, I want to paint this one the body color, as I know that’s how Porsche did it. How did you get that look on your’s that gives it that matte look that you can still see the black through it? Almost “weathered”, for lack of better terms. Being that you use spray cans, I’d imagine I can do it since I use spray cans and don’t have an airbrush. Thanks for your time!
