+Autogefühl - The button in the cupholder, that you ask about, is used to remove the cupholder. The compartment can be either storage or 1/2 cupholders. By pushing the button and holding it, while pressing on the end of the larger, non-moving fin, you can release the button and push the large fin into where it comes from. It will then lock in place. To re-deploy, just press the button and the cupholder springs out. Almost the same system as the previous Passat, so you can choose between storage, or maybe one cupholder and more storage space, than if the cupholders were fixed in place. :)

Excellent Review Thomas! I was only dissapointed that you didn't have a 7 seater, to actually compare the 3rd row seating with that of the Sharan. I'm sure that is where the Touran would come up short there. Now for the cup holders. My 2006 Passat had the exact same type of cup holders, and yes they are great at adjusting to various sized cups and bottles. The two buttons allow you to completely retract the adjustment arms so that you can use the full sized holder for extra large bottles, or, as I generally did, for all sorts of other items.

Now this is what I call a review. Great.

I believe the small buttons near the console cupholders are to adjust them to the cups different sizes, in order not to spill over, when they are smaller than the space size. I had 2 Passat estates, in the past, and bothbofvthem had those buttons. Great reviews, by the way. Keep up the excellent work. Greetings from sunny Portugal.

Great review Thomas. I like the styling of this MPV , inside and out. Clearly, the snack tray in the rear passenger position appears to be rather cheaply made, and the lift gate should be more sensitive in order to detect obstacles in the way and prevent possible injury. I particularly like the blind spot monitoring on this vehicle. Most systems alert you to a vehicle in your blind spot by illuminating a symbol in the mirror itself. This can sometimes be hard to detect when driving in daylight. But this system has a series of lights on the inner trim of the mirror, which makes it much more visible in daylight. Hi Thomas. Thanks for the nice review. For the button on cup holder in the middle console, if you press and hold it, you can fold the plastic arms inside cup holder back and hide it. So that you get a big storage slot merged by the two cup holder.

Great review Thomas, most comprehensive one I found. I have a question: Were these vehicle fitted with the optional sports suspension? I wondered because of the optional 18 inch wheels fitted, and they don't look ill fitted. Also, you commented on the ride being still comfortable, which is impressive.

Once again excelent review Thomas I really apreciate MPV cars, i like this one in particulary, even when i dont apreciate the back of the car, to square in my opinion, but the old model was also with that shape. 3 flaws that is inexcusable in VW or every other car designer. 1 - That "not" safety system in the close of the trunk. 2 - The 2º row of seats, when they are up, the space between them are so big that if you transport something in the trunk they can even pass between that flaws, and you can see everything to the trunk between that spaces (min 23) 3 - That cup suporters are the worst that i ever saw, what is your opinion on that? I whoud pay NOT to put them there. Resuming, the car is 110% until the first raw of seets, after thar i prefer to say that they delivery the design to someone from China. Keep up the good work, showing all the flaws and failures from designers. Greetings from PT

How do you rate the driving comfort of the Touran against the Passat Vagon? I would expect the cabin finish to be better in the Passat, and also less road/wind noise?

14:55 the button is used to 're-activate' the cupholder, if u have a very large bottle, u can turn that system all the way inside.... to make it appear again, u push the button ;)

I'm ordering my new VW Touran this weekend still not sure what colour to go for, because my current Touran is blue so maybe silver or grey. I'm opting for the 1.4 TSi DSG SEL, I don't do high miles and it's super quiet compared to the diesel.

Hey Thomas, about those cup holders at 14:55, you asked what the buttons are there for.. The system is just like in the Passat B6, hold the button pressed and you can slide the separators on the side to turn the cup holder space in to a box-type space. Much nicer than the previous one which really was incredibly bland. I'm just struggling to understand the point of the Golf SV. You might as well get this, benefit from the extra space and this actually looks better too

Hello Thomas, regards from Poland! Two questions regarding the Touran, if you don't mind. First - if VW is thinking about optional sliding doors in the rear, as in Sharan? Have you heard anything? I saw a car that looked like Touran and it had the sliding door - it was in the distance and I could not turn to check. The sliding door would be great for Touran - ease of use in the parking lots, garages etc. Second question - is that ionfotainment system the 8 inch one or 6,5 inch?

Thanks for the review.. very informative..I have a 2008 Touran Sport 170 PD DSG DPF...I am only looking to replace it due to the horrible fumes from the engine.. I tried to buy one in the UK but the extras like leather, sunroof, safety and convenience make it so expensive that its offputting.. then there is a huge waiting time..6 months. I will most likely wait for an EV or PHEV version. ...Just out of interest have you ever heard of problems with diesel fumes entering the cabin on VW Touran 2008 170 DSG Sports (with DPF)? I have been reporting this to VW for about 4 years and getting no solution. It happens mainly when the car is stationary or slow moving traffic. The exhaust is incredibly strong smelling nasty fumes that make one cough.

Thomas can you review the new touran pls ?

I find that blue color much more colored than any other grey, black or silver. Mostly for so dark countries as the Netherlands. By the way, Tom, you were driving through the Dutch roads not getting hold of the steering wheel??? Hope you don't do that very often (you still have a long life to live!)

Should I choose this car, or the S-max? We have three children (age 5, 8, 11), occasionally travelling with grandparents or friends, so 3rd row of seats would be useful. Is the S-max really bigger? The design and overall quality of the Touran looks better. The S-max is more expensive, but does it worth the extra money? Please give me your opinion.

Thomas, you are really into the innuendos today! I think VW should drop the tray and instead put cup holders on the doors. The design would look better and easier for parents to clean. As for the power door, you need to report this to VW. Very dangerous for a small child, animal or disabled person. Re-programming this feature should be very easy to do. I think these updated vehicles will sell very well in Europe. Sadly, people in America are addicted to SUV's and see a "minivan" as something a old and stodgy. If we could convince VW to bring the Passat wagon, with diesel and DSG, to America with a ride height of 8" or so (20cm) it would compete very well with Subaru Outback and Volvo V60 Crosstour or XC70.
