The Who is one of the most influential English rock bands of the 20th century. They formed in London, England in 1964. Their initial line-up consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, singer and guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist and backing vocalist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon.
The Who have sold an eye-watering 100 million albums worldwide and are renowned for being master storytellers. A few of their many claims to fame include putting out the first rock opera, participating in the development of Marshall Stack, and their skilled use of the synthesizer.
Towshend's feedback and power chord techniques coupled with Entwistle's and Moon's hugely influential playing styles gave The Who a signature sound that is often imitated but rarely ever duplicated. The band is often cited as being an influence by many punk rock, mod, and hard rock bands, and their songs and albums are still regularly played.
As of 2022, The Who are still touring and releasing music. Their most recent album, Who, was released in 2019. Despite still being a force to be reckoned with in the music industry, the band's line-up has changed substantially over the last 50 or so years. Join Facts Verse as we take the time to discuss the band members of The Who who sadly are no longer with us.

"I Can See For Miles" is one of my favorites. This is followed by "Behind Blue Eyes, and "See Me, Feel Me", which was actually part of the song, "We're Not Gonna Take It", but released as a single on its own. That was a Top 40 hit in 1970

I have been a huge Who fan since the 70's. Your video did and excellent job of covering the Who in 9 minutes. Your quotes from Townshend are spot on. However he would never have been as great as he is without Moon and Entwistle.

My daughter was a big Entwistle fan. The Who was scheduled to play in our town on July 4th, 2002. Seeing an original British Invasion group on American Independence Day was going to be fun. I couldn't wait to treat her to a live performance of her favorite bassist. But, he died the week before.

I feel so sad for her. He was my favorite bassist also. I got to see him with his own band in 97 at a small club in NYC. It was amazing being that close to the man himself. I never went to see the Who again after John died. It just wasn't the same with Pino.

I saw TOMMY the movie in 1975 in Redwood City, CA, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. I remember hearing of Keith’s death on the radio on my way to school in 1978. I finally got to see them live in Wales (of all places!) in 2013 on their Quadrophenia tour. Smallish venue, very cool! Dancing around with 4,000 middle aged diehard fans-I just kept thinking about Keith and John.

It’s not an excuse, but I feel that Pete Townshend has never truly accepted the deaths of Moon and Entwistle. He essentially had a love/hate relationship with Keith, especially toward the end as Keith continued to spiral out of control, and he’d been friends with Entwistle since he was 15. Ultimately, Pete’s still angry that two of the closest members of his life left him, and that anger occasionally flares up and results in wrong-headed comments like these.

Entwistle was a rock and roll death - he died as he lived. Coke and hookers the night before a tour: A+ Watching his fingers fly over the strings on an electric bass continues to amaze me. From the way it looks, I would expect it to sound like nonsense, but instead it is the brilliant iconic Ox sound, nearly impossible to replicate. He was truly a monster bassist.

Being only 50, I was to young to have seen the band with moon, plus I didn't become a fan until much later anyways. I did get to see them once with Entwistle(Pete's return to electric show after long pause), and twice without, as I had tickets to their kick off show in Vegas the night/day he died. While I was upset I would never get to see them with John in a small venue, he went out the way he lived, and we should all be so lucky. His doctor told him his body wasn't up to the rigors of touring, and he might die in the process, and he went anyways, and threw in cocaine and a stripper in for good measure, now that's a true "G". LOL

Know them all..! Not only this ones, several ones, hundreds... Why they died don't know...don't care.. Last I know was Charlie Watts.. Half of the records or more i heard there's a dead one..And hearing dead people.. Last weekend was Lou Reed and Bowie.. The great player of The Who..? Pete..!! I had a trilogy years ago, like a piramid.. Stones, Who, Zeppelin.. Stones at the top.. But there was so many bands I heard all good... Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Thin Lizzy, etc etc etc Back to the great New Wave bands again, Clash, listening some guitar stuff like Satriani and Steve Vai Clapton, SRV, etc and some more, Genesis, Yes, Camel, Peter Gabriel.. Pink Floyd ( and Gilmour or Waters) and stuff like Be Bop De Luxe, Natural Gas, Gordon Giltrap, Disco, Barry White, Donna Summer, Motown, Aretha Franklin, Blues, Etc.. "Is anybody out there?".. Ed Sheridan is nice to hear.. Some good stuff, the last ones I said I heard trough my father, in late 70's.. I heard "old people", but Hey hey my my Rock and Roll will never die.. Neil is fabulous.. Don't know if he is right..
