I have been a Moon fan all of my life. I'm sure I would have found him annoying, obnoxious and many other things if I randomly met him, not knowing him, but reading about his life from start to way too early of a finish and watching and hearing the best rock and roll drumming ever...I adore him and think about him as a lost boy. Bipolar, ADHD and self medicated, he got caught up in the fame and fun and couldn't stop himself. He didn't know how to be anything other than the fun and wild Keith Moon and that became his sad path to assured self destruction. A sad clown with a happy face. Flamboyant and loud to cover his insecurities and sadness. One of a kind and so special that we still love, study and are entertained by him nearly forty years after he left us.....

Wow I think you hit the nail right on the head there, Ginger Ann... I did actually meet Keith once in the early 70s, quite randomly, and had a slightly weird sort of conversation with him that left me with an impression of him pretty much as you describe, plus a bit of the (sorry to have to say it) rockstar delusionary ego thing, that presumably comes with the territory. That unexpected/unsought-after insight into his private life touched my heart though, and I was very sorry to read, only a few years later, of his death.

Moon died from an overdose of Heminvevrin, a drug used to treat alcohol withdraw symptoms. If he were a regular citizen, they probably would have kept him at a treatment facility and administered it under medical supervision. Some alcoholics should never attempt unsupervised home detox. John Bonham died from excessive alcohol consumption within a 24 hour period. He choked on his own vomit. Alcohol is the only drug that withdrawal symptoms can be fatal. What a terrible loss of two incredible musicians.

Strange watching this now... I can clearly remember the day(s) that he died. I had just left school and was working in a lumber yard... there was a long haired hippy type guy (looked a bit like Mick Fleetwood) who we used to call 'Brian the Lion.' He was inconsolable... 'Who Are You' had just been released... and they were playing it non-stop on the radio... 'He said, you can go sleep at home tonight ... If you can get up and walk away.' I think that within a week, Brian the Lion himself was dead... drug overdose or something... that is now 41 years ago... frightening...

Alcohol leaves destruction in it's path, I grew up with my dad as an alcoholic, but he worked hard and provided for us, so back then you never heard the word alcoholism, or detox, it was just part of male life, every event or even just going to nanna and gramps, as soon as my dad sat down my gramps would pour a shot and a beer, I remember the word, hiball, it was what a man does, but violence tended to be there always, my dad was a great guy, but at home it was scary, he's gone now but I will always love him even though we went through hell, directly because of alcohol.

From what I gather Keith was a true philanthropist at heart. I think if he survived and got clean before his last year alive, he would have been a great advocate for sobriety, and he's probably have a hospital wing or two named after him. Can you imagine the Keith Moon Rehabilitation Center? What these rock stars needed to do (and still do) is invest some of that wealth back into rehab and therapy for themselves and others, which I'm sure is already going on.

@Sargebri
@Sargebri 7 жыл бұрын
Yep. Of course, I think part of why Keith's addictions got the better of him was the fact that he held himself responsible for the death of his personal assistant. After that happened he totally went off the deep end for years. If he had survived he might have been an advocate for sober living, but still been a madman and maybe he could have finally broken into the movies and become a great comedic star.
