oh Andy, how incredibly remarkable to see someone who we all recognise at the start slowly and steadily descend into somebody we haven't met before - dejected, defeated and utterly gutted. It was hard to watch in places. I haven't yet experienced riding at this level but can imagine the phenominal amounts of effort and sacrifice that goes into even making it to that start line and for that alone you should be extremely proud of your achievements. You are an incredible athlete and an inspiration to many of us, and I know you will have taken the positives out of this now to help you on your next challenge. Thanks for bringing us along Andy, what a video. Chapeau mate.

Oh mate. I've been exactly where you are quite a few times. Not quite to the same scale as in I can probably stand about half of what you can your way fitter than I am. It's pushed me to always be overprovusioned which isn't always good on a big ride I'll have the ability with tools and spares to fix just about any mechanical short of a crash.winter stuff, full rainproof, lighter stuff for when the sun's out. When training I constantly embarked on rides which were probably a bit out of my depth. But I learned q lot from them. I also don't usually leave myself much choice in finishing, I deliberately pick somewhere that is half the distance or a circular route. And have found myself, unable to produce more than a crawl home many times. But then I would work at that level of miles until I could ride strong all the way. Then step out of my depth again. It's a process, you can't win them all, but either way you'll be stronger for the experience! I wish I had your fitness.

Andy myself i'm not an ultra distance rider(although i did the tour the france completly, one day before the pro's) but i do really like you're video's, but although this goal didn't have the perfect outcome, you can still be very proud of you're achievement, it's a life lesson for all of us, sometimes you achieve you're goals sometimes you miss. but showing on camera that it didn't work out the way you planned it, deserves a hell lot of respect, and i'll take my hat off for you sir. keep up the good work, greetings from belgium

Amazing achievement to get as far as you did with those conditions. I suffered hypothermia earlier this year, (I'd only been racing for an hour) and it was really scary . I just thought I was cold but when my temperature wouldn't come up the medics called for an ambulance ,and then I knew I was in trouble. Luckily after warming up I was ok to drive home later that day. Thankyou for this video, and for sharing your race experience, your highs and lows. I hope you were able to gain something from it , in spite of the DNF, and can look ahead to your next event (Africa?🤣🤣)

The weather deffo took a massive turn for the worse and plays a huge part in your mood, I struggle with even staying appropriately hydrated and fed at 120km rides I'd probably just burn out in 8hrs ! Got to admit also when tech works it's the best thing, when it goes tits up it drives me nuts.... I think if I can get to the 161km this year that'll probably be it for me lol That was a brutal course though and you can see from some of the steep hill efforts all it takes is to be chilled, hungry and maybe starting to get dehydrated to be easily tipped over the edge. Damn good effort though and you'll come back stronger!!!

You did well regardless of the outcome. Lessons learned, hopefully, are adequate and sufficient clothing brought, perhaps? Emergency blanket around knee and toes is not cutting it. This suggests lack of proper body coverings for the conditions. I think that lack of clothing contributed to the scratch. I rode 6 days and over 600 miles in non stop rain from Calais to hannover. Gotta eat even when you dont feel like it and gotta drink even when you dont feel like it, Took me 5 days to go to the bathroom such was the shock of the constant milage. From exeter, devon to eindhoven i rode and only then could "relieve" myself. You have the mindset and physical capabilities to do these distances, so a scratch does ot define you.

Wow, this video was so "real", one could feel the initial excitement of the cycle, then as the time and miles ticked by the weather challenges produced the raw emrionsa that require digging so deep many don't or can't go there and most of us would have experienced - probably a lot earlier than where you did Andy in the race and no doubt most of us would have called a halt to it way before you did. I admire your strength, determination, and guts to do what you do, but most of all, your decision to put your health over the race itself as the best decision. You can go at the race again, and no doubt you will. Keep up what you are doing. As a beginner cyclist, your "realism" is very much appreciated

Great video Andy - your Sunday was like my Wednesday. I think for me I started to feel the cold from Emily Moor, took 5-6 minutes to get phone to work and take the photo as evidence. Once I came off after leaving Hebdon Bridge that was it, cold, wet, phone waterlogged and Wahoo give up the ghost. I can honestly say I never felt so cold, even teaching skiing in Canada in the -20's I felt warmer. Full admiration for those Rookies to pressed on in the dreadful conditions.

While it wasn't an ultracycling event per se, I bowed out of last year's RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) at about the half-way point when the temperature was approaching 38c and was predicted to be even hotter the following days. My general philosophy to riding long distances has two parts, the present and the future: 1. can I, at this very moment in time, keep going? then keep going. 2. will this put me in danger of life or limb, probably reconsider. I'm on some medication that makes me more susceptible to heat-related problems, so it was an easy decision to reconsider.

that sounds like a classic liver enzymes bonk. It happens when normal rest cycles are interrupted. Long events Perfection learn vehicle if you can access some testing after.

This is interesting, I googled it but can’t see much as bonk is probably more a cycling term, you mean liver enzymes increasing due to exercise with no sleep?

Thanks, as ever, Andy. Same route, same weather - what could you have done to complete the course? Wahoo instead of a Garmin obviously. Booking accommodation (if available) to get some proper rest, stay warm and dry off? Interested to hear your thoughts.

Hi Andy, gutted for you mate, a couple of points perhaps you might want to think about is such a big event for you. Why did you not stay overnight night and start the event fresh.was you looking complete the event or to beat last year time, this may of had effect in mind set. Training of your mind is just as important as to putting in those miles. So pick yourself up,put work in a go smash the trains Atlantic challenge.

hi mate, I think the day of the start was OK for me I had a good sleep etc. The issue for me was lack of headspace in the lead up, I have ruthlessly cut things out to have better headspace and less stress. without being dramatic, I wasn't in an ideal place mentally, that was where I fell down I think bud. But at least Ill be in a better place for the TCR now

45 mins - I’ve the OS App on my phone, £25 a year and all the U.K. in 1:25000 & 1:50000. Plus can download areas for loading up if outside mobile signal - really useful as live in Scotland.

Andy If its any help you seemed to be uncharacteristically weak at an early stage, maybe 80ish miles, everything else just seemed to build from that onwards, whilst I already knew the outcome from your earlier comments, seeing that, I was surprised just how far you made it!! (Was it the prep, just a bad day or the early super steep gradients?, the only other ride I've seen where things weren't as you expected, was when you went both faster & longer with i believe cheddar gouge push, which knocked you out afterwards) Keep your chin up mate, you are flying. Ps little lanes in hilly areas with as much rain as we've had probably wasn't making it any easier.

you're right on both counts. When I needed a nap in the morning that was a bit of a warning sign. I had too much on my plate recently so have been ruthlessly cutting back on what I do to help with headspace before TCR.

@@andycultracycling thanks. Enormous feat by the way. The weather really can take everything from you, doesn't matter how fit you are. Especially over multiple days if there is no chance to dry. I think it was the right call to scratch.
