In this free guitar lesson, I have another installment of How Does This Song Work featuring "All Right Now" by Free. I examine this song's music theory by taking a look at the key, chords, progression, mode, and the different types of scales used in the guitar solo. You see how this song fits into the A Mixolydian mode and makes use of both the major pentatonic scale and the minor pentatonic scale.

Desi, these are my favorite types of lessons. It may not be a song I'd ever perform, but this is how you learn to play. Learn a song (which introduces you to new approaches and techniques), then break it down and find out what's going on. I never comment on your vids, but feel compelled to show my appreciation today. In short, a thank you is long overdue. So, sincerely thank you (I may never perform the song, but I'm sure as hell gonna steal these riffs, Haha :)

Loved this explanation. Especially the way the song uses the minor and major scales for the solo.

This is a good example of when you can mix major in minor tonalities. But don't get used to it. It doesn't work at all songs.

I gave a thumbs up halfway in before the class ended....really great knowledge for musicians!!! Blues rock yeah! You mentioned "the rub" of minor and major together....would this be an emotional thing that works great at creating "feeling", rather than an educated rule being broken/wrong!?

That major to minor 3rd thing is a big part of the blues sound.

Paul Kossoff learned to play on the classical guitar when he was in elementary school. Had a great guitar teacher and was a diligent student that took his lessons seriously

One of the most fun songs I learned on guitar- great stuff. If I can throw a suggestion out there, maybe analyze Something by The Beatles- beautiful song. I'd love to learn about the scale patterns in that solo and George's fills. Your method of breaking down songs individually and paying respect to each of their unique parts would go great for this hit. Cheers

I struggle with the fingering of the A chord. Are you muting the high E string? Tips?

I mainly just playing an A power chord. But, yes, I mute the first string by lifting my index finger so that it rests on the first string but does not press down on it.
